Good news, bad news -- which would you like first?

Actually, let's start with the good news. In December, we learned that U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT ) is developing a new superfast, hypersonic bomber dubbed SR-72 (or more poetically "Son of Blackbird"). Traveling at heights of 80,000 feet, and speeds of Mach 6 and up, this futuristic warplane will launch missiles nearly as blistering-fast -- Mach 5 or better.

As Lockheed Martin tells it, the combination of a hypersonic SR-72, and its on-board High Speed Strike Weapon (HSSW) will be a true "game-changer" in modern warfare. Once the weapons systems go live in 2030, they'll be capable of striking an enemy at "nearly any location across a continent in less than an hour." What's more, Lockheed isn't even the only company working on such "scramjet" powered missiles. Boeing (NYSE: BA ) has one in development, too, the so-called X-51 WaveRider, and like Lockheed's rocket, it travels at Mach 5.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------But now here's the bad news:

China's got a hypersonic missile, too. And it's twice as fast as ours.

On Thursday, British newspaper The Guardian reported that China has just become the second country on the globe to conduct test flights of hypersonic missiles. The Chinese version, dubbed "WU-14," fired off on Jan. 9, and according to press reports achieved a speed of Mach 10, putting even the best U.S. hypersonics to shame.

So far, no many people seem eager to talk about China's test. Not the Chinese, who obliquely declined to either confirm or deny that the test took place, referring only to unspecified "planned domestic scientific research and experiments" that "are normal" and "not aimed at any country or target." Not the U.S. military, either, who did confirm that it was aware of the test that China won't comment on, saying only "we're aware of the test of the hypersonic vehicle."

One final bit of good news -- for defense contractors
In fact, it seems the only folks who do want to talk about China's new Mach 10 missile are members of the U.S. Congress -- three in particular, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Howard "Buck" McKeon among them. Their take on China's missile, though, may be especially instructive: "While round after round of defence cuts have knocked America's technological advantage on its back, the Chinese and other competitor nations push toward military parity with the United States; in some cases, as in this one, they appear to be leaping ahead of us."

Already, Congress has allotted $200 million to the Pentagon researching hypersonics. Could be, that number is going to go up in 2014. As for how much it goes up, though... that probably depends to a great extent on just how successful China's tests are going. So China has this and their new ballistic missile capable of reaching out a thousand miles and powerful enough to destroy an aircraft carrier. Specifically designed to knock out one nation's carriers. Yes you guess it USA!! HOWS THAT FOR A TRADING PARTNER, FRIEND AND FAVORED NATION?--Tyr

maybe we should bring some troops home from Afghanistan ($300 million per day) and elsewhere, close some bases round the world and spend some money or real R&D not controlled by 2 or 3 megacorps. maybe a bit of competition is in order. Or maybe it's time for a mahantan project style job with a focused goal to ... well i'd suggest we do that for an oil and gas alternative 1st or hey maybe at the same time.
mach 12 flight and a cheap clean fuel alternative by 2030.

Don't trade/barter with enemy! A lesson recent history teaches and my family knows well ! Don't believe it just ask the Indians on the reservations!! Nixon brought us to trade with and fund the rise in China. His doing that advanced their rise in power by 50 to a 100 years IMHO. They will soon surpass us in power. And we see them flexing their muscles by way of Naval advancement and weapons being engineered designed to target our military specifically! They are our enemy and the sooner we prepare for that in earnest the better. Currently we are bending over and saying shove it in deeper! Sad and deadly thing to do. Could someday lead to our demise. We may be exceptional but we are not invincible. No nation or empire ever has been. A fact that history teaches leaving no valid doubt on IMHO..-Tyr

Tyr. Though it does sound scary. I honestly doubt that China would ever try to attack one of our Carriers.

China's economy is worse than ours. If they did such a thing. Their trading partner (US), and all of the DEBT (ours) they hold for us. Would never be repaid.

Yes. They may have such weapons powerful enough to do as you suggested. But....they must also be smart enough to know. WE WOULD NOT JUST ALLOW THEM TO DO SUCH A THING WITHOUT A RETURN VOLLEY OF SUBMARINE LAUNCHED...MACH 3 ROCKETS WITH MULTIPLE WARHEADS.
Think about it.

Naw. ICBMs come at you a lot faster, like nearly three times as fast, and we've already developed technology to shoot those down.

Hitting a relatively slow Mach 10 missile should be like shooting a sitting duck, almost.

Kudoes to the CHinese for developing a missile that's obsolete before it's test-fired.

Little-Acorn. I tend to wonder whether the Chinese...as less trustworthy as they are, even are aware of our LASER, counter-missile defense system that has been tested over the last year?

What? Stop nation building and meddling in the affairs of others for political gains? Hell would freeze over first.

jafar. Bet YOU would never say such things if YOUR ASS was being threatened, and your homeland was being taken over by an enemy like AQ. Or...maybe you would welcome AQ and the Muslim Brotherhood with open arms...until they found out how TWO FACED you are?

How easy it is for someone like you to make such foolish statements...Until you become a target. Then...like most other nations around the world. WHO WOULD YOU CALL FIRST?

The U.S.A. or IRAN?
