As some of you might know, my boys are all big into wrestling.

My 6th graders school held an invitational the other day and they placed 2nd. Not to bad considering they lost 6 varsity kids due to poor grades.

Anyhow........my son pinned his guy in 20 seconds, he was so excited he let his sister hug him in front of the whole team.

Trigg. Sounds great. Congrats to you guys. We went through all of that Wrestling stuff with our youngest back in the 80's.
I remember coming home from a deployment after 4 months, and seeing him wrapped in plastic wrap, trying to make weight for his next match.
He won, but looked like the handle on a shovel.

They both loved a movie about wrestling called

the rules regarding weight loss have gotten much stricter, thank goodness. They aren't allowed to drop weight like they used to.

My youngest is wresting varsity 75 pounds, he's naturally that weight though and only needs to keep an eye on what he eats the day before in order to make sure he comes in under 75.

Good to hear Trigg. Keep an eye on them anyway. I know the rules have changed quite a bit. But, it pays to keep a close eye on them, and their coaches.

Stay Proud of them. They grow to fast as it is. That's the hardest part of being a parent.

Good luck to your guys.

Watching kids in sports or other activities is one of the best things parents and grandparents can do. Kids remember who came to which meets and concerts, years later.

Granted inside sports in the winter are the better than freezing in football stands or on a hill during a cross country meet in the rain or sleet. ;)

Better yet, concerts with orchestra or choral singing.

Soccer in the late spring/early fall are fun, especially in the early years. ;)

Yeah, miss those days! Good thing with the current job, just ending girls basketball season, in the past 3 weeks have been to three games and two practices!

Trigg I wrestled back in the day and think it is a great sport, now my youngest boys ( 11 and 12 ) are getting into it, my youngest Wyatt also in 6th grade wrestled for the school this year and did great ( I would say he won about 85% of his matches and all by pinning his opponent ) The coaches did wonders with these kids, wrestling requires a lot of self discipline and a lot of using ones head and 95% of the kids on the team matured so much by the end of the season.

The only issue I have with the program down here is the boys are forced to wrestle the girls, and this may not be to bad in 6th grade but it is the middle school so the kids are quite developed by the 8th grade, as I watched some of the matches of the older kids ( boys verse girls) it looked more like soft core porn than a wrestling match, and after the boy toyed with the young ladies ( and didn't pin them in the first 10 seconds, simply so he could extend his sexual fantasy) they would walk off the Mat and in some cases actually fist bump and laugh with there friends.

The main thing with wrestling is that while it's a team sport, the kids go out on the mat by themselves, so they have to be confident and ready to go because there is no one out there to pick up the slack.

We have a girl on our team and usually had one on the HS team when my oldest wrestled. I remember the first time he had to wrestle one in 7th grade and was nervous because he didn't know where he was supposed to grab her, so he just took her down as quick as possible. The HS girls had it tough and I would never recommend a girl wrestle at that age. The boys (for the most part) are going to win, and I've seen boys use embarrassing moves on them and grin at the team. Just like you described, it's embarrassing to watch and humiliating for the girls.

Trigg I have to agree 100 % about the older girls, I have not seen one at HS age but the 8th graders we have look a lot like grown woman. and as I stated it was quite clear what the young men where doing when they would spend a couple minutes to pin them, it was soft core porn at least. But then you would get a straight lace kid that had to wrestle a girl and he would pin her within 30 seconds, no there is no way I can agree with letting young ladies wrestle with the boys, but hell it wasn't long ago we had a thread going where as a public school was explaining different sexual activities to do so who knows now a days.
