Saudi demands Qatar 'shut down Al-Jazeera'

Dubai (AFP) - Saudi Arabia demanded that Qatar shut down Al-Jazeera and two think tanks during a recent meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council, a source close to someone who attended the talks told AFP Friday.

Riyadh demanded the closure of the pan-Arab broadcaster as well as the Brookings Doha Center and the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, the source said on condition of anonymity.

After the reportedly heated March 5 GCC meeting, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates recalled their ambassadors from fellow member Qatar, which they accuse of interfering in their internal affairs and supporting the Muslim Brotherhood.

The source said Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal had demanded three things of Doha -- "to close the (Qatari-owned) Al-Jazeera network, which stirs sedition; close the research centres in Doha, and turn over all outlaws" on its territory.

Doha's foreign minister replied that the demand constituted "interference in Qatar's internal affairs," the same source said.

Gulf officials do not usually comment on closed-door meetings.

Qatar is seen as a supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates across the region, which are banned in most Gulf states.

Saudi Arabia and other Gulf monarchies have long been hostile toward the Brotherhood, fearing that its brand of grass-roots activism and political Islam could undermine their authority.

Saudi Arabia and the other two states accused Doha of giving refuge to opposition figures and of even giving some of them citizenship.

Critics have long accused the influential pan-Arab broadcaster Al-Jazeera of biased coverage in favour of the Brotherhood, and several of its journalists are on trial in Egypt for allegedly supporting the group.

Most Gulf states hailed the Egyptian military's July overthrow of president Mohamed Morsi -- a former senior member of the Muslim Brotherhood -- and pledged billions in aid. Qatar, which had strongly supported him, has seen its influence in Cairo evaporate.

The Gulf Cooperation Council includes Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Oman. ^^^ Trouble in paradise. Couldn't happen to a better place or a better propaganda service =Al jazz. IMHO..- -Tyr

Al Jazeera, English Language version. Yes ... one of the easiest television stations to find in the UK, outside of the BBC's own channels. Freeview, Freesat, all cable networks including Virgin Media, Sky Satellite ... you name it, Al Jazeera is present ......

By comparison, so far as I know, Fox News is only available via satellite TV, on Sky ... and even then, only on SOME of their viewing packages !

Saudi Arabia can go and suck rotten eggs. That's pretty much Qatar's reaction :)

Al-Jazeera is completely without credibility in the civilized world.

Remember when 'Baghdad Bob' was giving a press release about how American armies were being slaughtered out in the desert "over a hundred miles away" and just then an M1A1 Abrams Battle Tank rumbled past on the way to the airport?

Remember the 'Lion of Baghdad' that would never surrender and would triumph over the infidels? Remember the 'Lion' being dragged from a hole in the ground?

Al-Jazeera is nothing more than an islamic mouthpiece that has been proven to lie and distort the truth, and will lie despite overwhelming proof to the contrary simply because there is a muzzie on one side of the equation and someone else on the other.

It is a media outlet controlled by radical muzzie fervor.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Quite right. Only today, they've screened a programme supposedly 'examining' the 'truth' of the Lockerbie terrorist attack (the airliner flying over Lockerbie when it was destroyed). It was in large measure a programme designed to whitewash Megrahi's own culpability for the attack.

DISGUSTING.
