BOISE, Idaho — Students, staff and visitors are now cleared to bring concealed guns onto Idaho's college and university campuses.

Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter signed the bill into law Wednesday.

It allows retired law enforcement and concealed-carry permit holders bring guns into classrooms and anywhere else on campus — except dormitories and stadiums.

The proposal drew heated criticism from heads of all eight of the state's public colleges and sparked a protest that drew hundreds to the Capitol.

Opponents say it will strip policy-making power from universities, stymie recruitment efforts and put those on campus at risk.

Otter wrote in a statement he backed the bill to protect Second Amendment rights.

He says Idaho will carefully monitor the situation to alleviate public safety concerns.

The new law goes into effect July 1.

Good. Now if/when some whacko wants to pull a Virginia Tech, the whacko will know that he's more likely to face a bullet from an unknown direction at an unknown time, right in the classroom where he first starts murdering people. And so he knows he's less likely to achieve the high body counts he wants before the cops can get there to pop him anyway.

And so maybe he'll be less likely to try it in the first place, knowing he won't be discussed for months after he dies, as he was hoping to be.

Too bad so many other campuses DO give him the unopposed run of their classrooms, and so remain vulnerable to him.

The biggest advantage of universal concealed carry, is NOT that you can kill a bad guy.

The biggest advantage is that the bad guy is less likely to start shooting or raping or whatever in the first place, knowing that someone in the crowd will probably be able to stop him, even though most people around him still don't bother to carry.

Increased safety, without a single gun being drawn, or a shot fired.

^^^ O' hell no, achieving that can not be allowed.. The leftist/lib/dems insist all guns must be seized and all citizens must depend upon the magnificent and perfect government for protection from cradle to grave! Truly such people promoting that "insane idea" of government perfection and responsibility should be locked up IMHO.. For that is an utter denial of reality and the entire history of mankind! Surely people that live in such denial, such a fantasy world are a grave danger to those that do not! --Tyr
