Obama may allow air defense help for Syria rebels

President Barack Obama's possible shift would likely be welcomed by Saudi Arabia, which has been pressing the White House to allow the man-portable air-defense systems, known as "manpads," into Syria. Obama arrived in Saudi Arabia on Friday evening for meetings with King Abdullah.

Allowing manpads to be delivered to Syrian rebels would mark a shift in strategy for the U.S., which until this point has limited its lethal assistance to small weapons and ammunition, as well as humanitarian aid. The U.S. has been grappling for ways to boost the rebels, who have lost ground in recent months, allowing Syrian President Bashar Assad to regain a tighter grip on the war-torn nation.

The actual manpad shipments could come from the Saudis, who have so far held off sending in the equipment because of U.S. opposition.

The president is not expected to announce a final decision on the matter during his overnight trip to the Gulf kingdom. U.S. and Saudi intelligence officials have been discussing the possibility of injecting manpads into the crisis for some time, including during a meeting in Washington earlier this year.

As recently as February, the administration had said Obama remained opposed to any shipments of manpads to the Syrian opposition. The U.S. has been concerned that the weaponry could fall into the wrong hands and possibly be used to shoot down a commercial airliner.

Among the reasons for Obama's shift in thinking is the greater understanding the U.S. now has about the composition of the Syrian rebels, the official said. However, the official added, the president continues to have concerns about escalating the fire power on the ground in Syria, which has been torn apart by more than three years of civil war.

The official wasn't authorized to discuss the internal deliberations by name and insisted on anonymity

^^^ OH HELL NO!! Impeach and arrest that son of a BITCH NOW!! Lying bastard now saying those he would be aiding are not damn Islamic terrorists that Federal law forbids giving aid to. This is pure unadulterated treason !!!

SURE THING, reason is the bambastard breaking a Federal law to arm our damn terrorist enemies to grab ANOTHER NATION to be used in the future to attack us. And let's just give them much better weapons to do their ffing terrorism with while we are at it.
IMHO that kind of logic belongs somewhere that the sun don't shine amigo..-Tyr

Watch the video I posted in that thread (Warning, it's VERY violent and VERY NSFW). But those are the Syrian rebels, and that's what they are doing with their weapons. Maybe those are American weapons in that video, who knows. But from what I've seen coming out of Syria, the USA shouldn't be giving EITHER side any assistance, IMO.

Sigh, he's not breaking a federal law, Tyr. That's your supposition. What he's doing is idiotic, and certainly going to have long-term consequences, but it's lack of learning the lessons taught to us in the days when we put people like Saddam and Bin Laden in power over there, not a criminal act.

If he backs the Syrian rebels, I foresee a point down the road where, should they be victorious, we end up having to stop them, just as we've had to stop Saddam and Bin Laden. We keep making the mistake in the Middle East of trying to divide groups into good guys and bad guys, which hasn't worked a single time it's been tried.

Never assign to malevolence, what can be written off as incompetence.

1. If those weapons are going to terrorists that Federal law already declares its illegal to aid then it is most certainly breaking Federal law. Obama may be the messiah but even he doesn't get to have his cake and eat it too.-Tyr

2. Good that you agree how bad a mistake it would be but its still illegal and propaganda put out by bamscum and his media allies does not change that fact. Anybody saying those are not some of the same Muslim terrorist groups that are the target in that Federal law are either ignorant or lying IMHO.--Tyr

3. Definitely a good policy IMHO.. Its not incompetence when those groups are known to be Al Qaeda and other Muslim terrorist groups already on our sanctioned Terrorist list. OBAMA suddenly denying truth does not change that reality. -Tyr

Never gift respect and integrity upon a lying , worthless bastard no matter what clever words he uses or allies he brings to help him deceive his intended victims. For it will always come back to bite you in your ass just as you yourself just rightly admitted. --Tyr

If they are FSA and the ones being executed are Assad's soldiers, they deserved the executions. Any soldier who turns his weapon on his own people deserves to die in my opinion.

That's the problem, though. They're not really terrorists... not far removed, certainly, and history teaches they have an excellent chance of becoming terrorist, but they're not terrorists themselves.

The problem is, like it said in the article, it was looked into, and they didn't find the links that would deny it. This doesn't mean they're not heading in the same direction as Obama and Saddam, either, but it does mean that, technically, it's legal. It's the sort of idiocy only a really smart person can make, because he believes himself smarter than those who came before him, "Sure, this kind of thing has bitten us in the ass every single time we've done it, but this time will be different!"

It's not so much him denying truth, as him denying history to this point. Basically, the world's worst terrorists have been backed by us to some degree or other, and they turn on us every time, because of course, we go to put an end to the shenanigans

The thing is though, the rebels are pretty obviously looking to be on the track toward becoming another run with Iraq or Al-Qaeda. It's not so much that they're there now, or plan to be there, but they are still arcing in that direction.

I understand, we're a nation of rebels, so we are always going to have a soft spot for people fighting to overthrow oppression. However, we also need to make sure that we're getting into line with who we help, and what their plans are after the fact. People forget that when we overthrew British rule, we had a plan going for what was going to happen after the war, a united group of virtues to which we held.
