Limbaugh is discussing an increase in people who think their children will not do better than they did. I think my children may have to leave the USA to do better than I. What say the other DP members here?

It's getting harder. We've been pissing away our comparative advantages for far too long.

It depends on what your children major in. Some (MOST actually) major in things that are destined to leave them broke and unhappy. I realize that it is very hard (especially for a select few that B.O., Holder and their evil followers have sworn to destroy and I realize that given the circumstances of today's BIG gov. it will be difficult to simply survive but there are still a few occupations that will do MUCH better than others (regardless of the times). Having said all of this, it falls back on the parents in many ways by not preparing their kids properly. Some can't help their situations but others can. Get involved.....be there for them and help them plan around the difficulties of discrimination, competition and corruption.

In short, it is a FACT that our kids will have a MUCH harder go at it than we but that isn't to say that our next generation couldn't do better than we either. Let's just hope that Nov. 2014 and 2016 falls in their favor.

My kids may not exceed their father's income or lifestyle, but they are all currently on a path to do better than we thought we'd do at their age. It been a mix of education, hard work, and connections. Connections may get you an interview, but it's the person that has to swing the sale then keep it going.

At all levels of socioeconomic groups it's damn hard for teens and twenty-somethings. As always it's 'easier' for those that have parents/family/friends that help help them connect, but in many instances those are folks in their 50's and 60's that are truly treading water for their jobs themselves; after taking huge hits to their portfolios.

All have a much harder road than those of us in our 40's-60's had at their age. Basically it was show up, do your job, take the promotions and contribute to the 401k. Even with the one hit in the mid-80's and the last 9 years, we still had more opportunities at younger ages than our kids.

All my children are in a better position in life than I was at their age. All are better off right now than I am, but I'm semi-retired. I just hope they invest wisely so they don't have to radically modify their life like I have.

I think my children may have to leave the USA to do better than I.

If that if the way you feel, why not give them a head start and move to Brazil?

We have 5 daughters, 41, 40, 36, 33, 31. Four have college degrees, BS, BA, MA, PhD. One has a GED. The GED makes more than the others. She's in sales. The PhD earns the least. None own a home. Three went bankrupt. None are working towards a pension, none have a 401k.

I owned my first home at 21. My husband was 18 when he got his first home. We are retired now. We own our home, our kids will never see that, unless things change for the better real fast.

That is kind of sad. My husband makes more than both of our parents combined. My sister and her husband make far less. They have a home in East Los Angeles that is far less expensive than the house my husband and I have in Huntington Beach. My sister has a college degree. Her husband has a GED. Together, they make enough to get by. I have a MA and my husband a BA.
My husband and I have a retirement account and a college account for our daughter. I don't see why she can't do as well or better than us. All you really need is ambition and a desire to succeed. The trouble comes when you give in to a desire to fail.

My husband and I blame ourselves. He grew up in Dayton, Ohio, and I in New York. We had excellent job opportunities. We made the mistake of moving our families to Florida. Job opportunities were terrible there. We tried to convince the girls to expand their job search to other states, but they were in relationships in Florida and stayed there. Big mistake. Three of the five marriages ended in divorce.

Why blame yourself? Once kids become adults, it is their responsibility to make something of their lives. That is why my parents made my sister and I move out after high school. We both went to college.
Divorce, lost jobs and bankruptcy are all matters of personal responsibility. You can't place relationships and having a good time above your need to obtain/hold a decent job.
The only reason it would be your responsibility is if you continued to support them through their failures. I have found that young adults who know they have the option to return home or get money from their parents are less motivated to succeed on their own.

Very true. We paid for most of their education, and weddings, but nothing more.

They were all raised in nice homes and neighborhoods. They didn't know anything else. When they started out, they didn't buy a starter home like we did, and work up to the big home. They bought the big, 5 bedroom, 4.5 bath home with a variable rate, interest only mortgage. Dumb!

You can't guarantee financial security no matter what occupation you choose. So much depends on the economy.

Hubby does much better than his parents and so does his brother. His sister on the other hand lives paycheck to paycheck and I doubt she has any savings.

Of my 3 sisters, I am the only one who has a retirement account, although my younger sister (37) has started saving recently. My two other sisters barely make due. My oldest has her Masters in Analitical Chemistry, but she lives on a small island in Finland with no job opportunities. IF she would move she would make much much more.

If my two oldest who are in college right now finish their degrees they should do very well...Mechanical Engineering and Bio/chem degrees.
