"And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name" (Revelation 14:9-11).

"There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead" (Luke 16:19-31).

Quote a choice, sounds almost like a threat, no? Why exactly a god would feel the need to threaten the likes of me, i have no idea.

What makes you think you are more or less than anyone else in the eyes of God? This notion of difference is man made. All these little walls we build as mortals? Hiding behind then ain't going to work when He judges you. Parliament ain't going to save you, bubba.

What you see as a threat I see as a warning.

Seems like god is a bully. If gid wants our love; impossible to love if commanded to and that command is merely a threat. I think the bible interpreters got that wrong.

You hit the nail on the head. One man's excuse is another man's reason. It's all about interpretation. The Bible was written by men, not God. That doesn't mean there isn't a God.

Do you deny the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that guided the hands of those who wrote the New Testament?

while Tailfins presentation only mentions the dark side of the the story,
i don't think people's wishful thinking about "interpretations and "only men" make for honest points.
the Text says what it says, and if you're in anyway going to accept the other text as "God's word" which says "God is Love" "love your neighbor" "love hopes all things" " love your enemy" love love love..
Then you can't willy nilly ignore the other parts of the Scripture written by the same "men" because it makes you feel uncomfortable.
the scripture is not buffet table where we can pick and choose the Bible verses we like and make up a god that suits us.

Well ok , i guess it is sort of a threat to say 'if you commit a crime, you will go to jail.'

But has God really presented a difficult or unfair choice?
Trust the person who created you to give you the eternal peace, love and fulfillment of your dreams,
by accepting his a free gift of COMPLETE forgiveness for all your sketchy and filthy deeds past present and future,
by just having faith in the guy that made it all possible by dying a generally horrific death for you because he does deeply care about you.
or
don't believe
and suffer the consequences or your sketchy and filthy deeds yourself.

Did really God make it so difficult for us?

It would seem from reading some of the responses to this thread that there are those who do not believe in hell but do believe in Christ. Is that a fair reading of what has been presented so far? If so, how did you come to that particular belief and can you support it?

Inquiring minds want to know.
