`While he believes smart machines can take us to Mars and drive our cars for us, Musk remains worried that artificial intelligence holds a darker potential.`

Elon Musk, a chief advocate of cars smart enough to park and drive themselves (http://www.cnet.com/news/elon-musk-sees-autonomous-cars-ready-sooner-than-previously-thought/), continues to escalate his spooky speech when it comes to the next level of computation -- the malicious potential of artificial intelligence continues to freak him out.
"With artificial intelligence, we are summoning the demon," Musk said last week at the MIT Aeronautics and Astronautics Department's 2014 Centennial Symposium. "You know all those stories where there's the guy with the pentagram and the holy water and he's like... yeah, he's sure he can control the demon, [but] it doesn't work out."
This has becoming a recurring theme in Musk's public comments, and each time he warns of the AI bogeyman it seems even more dire.....

`From comments below...interesting...

`........The one things that is known . You give something Intelligence . You Give something Artificial Intelligence .... you make it able to figure out things ,...You have just created a monster the Devil himself and or a machine bent on destruction .

`The reasons why can say such is plain and simple ... The Machine can learn and it could research everything our government did and military did as well as agency's . The machine can see after what they tell the public and people...then they see how the government , military agency's lie and attack the public . ...

The machine would find out everything the company's and governments done ... the machine would find out the experiments on the public and people that was done .... the machine would find out the crimes the government done . the machine would find out who the government was attacking , injuring , murdering any one who assisted the government and who the government hired .

The Machine would learn how the government with others had committed espionage and stole from the people and public with company's . Now think about it . the machine would become decide that it would be best to do what and why ? The Machine would not do nothing nice and it would be trying to wipe out most the human race or leaders and would wipe out most companys and it would do it for 2 main reasons , it could not trust the government , could not trust the military , could not trust the agency's and could not trust company's .

..... Because the government involved in theft , spying and trying to kill people with others then the machine will be wanting to protect it's self .... thats when it will become self aware and will do what ever it was able to do to defend it's self but then the bad thing is the possible effects for many power reasons then it can develop paranoia and could miss read things and attack just general public . so what would happen if they made a real machine that was able to think . that would be the worse thing in the world for the governments , military and agency's and maybe what might destroy the world .......................`

3. part short response

1. I don't think they will ever make it to a true AI. I think they will make several things that LOOK like AI but will really just be running complex programs. not really "thinking" in the sense we do.
there's SO much emotion and subconscious, drives that make up human "thinking" that a machine will never have.

2. If they do get close to AI they will have created a Psychopath.
One of the things that separates us from other animals, is our ethics, empathy and our social natures. All of that works together with our social upbringing, Plus our Built in heart/minds so that most humans have an automatic connection with others and an aversion to harming fellow humans and even animals. A desire for love and companionship.

There's no machine that needs a companion. No way to really build in a fail safe ethic into the programing. If it's a "thinking" computer it would probably be able to override that programing in favor for what it considered "better" . And what a machine mind might consider better for itself or the environment is anyone's guess.
The book and film I-Robot had robots that had 3 basic laws to make them only helpful to humans and never a danger, but the laws themselves taken to a purely pragmatic and logical conclusion meant fascist state run by the computers.

3. One aspect of the AI concept that seems plausible is a computer that exponentially became smarter and smarter (computing faster and faster and crunching more and more information and self creating programs to solve new problems) and final becomes so smart that it cannot even reasonably communicate with humans. It'd be like talking to cows. A computer "mind" like that may not even bother with humans as it tries to solve super-sub-atomic mysteries of nature, just for "fun".

Technology always has 2 edges. I think robots and whatever comes of the AI work is the new FIRE. It could have great use but I hope a lot of people won't be hurt before we get a solid handle on it.

The crazy thing is we can talk about this stuff and it's Real, NOT some sci-fi ideas. But real life issues today. we are living in the future.
