Christmas and Easter have been stricken from next year’s school calendar in Montgomery County. So have Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah.

Montgomery’s Board of Education voted 7 to 1 Tuesday to eliminate references to all religious holidays on the published calendar for 2015-2016, a decision that followed a request from Muslim community leaders to give equal billing to the Muslim holy day of Eid al-Adha.

In practical terms, Montgomery schools will still be closed for the Christian and Jewish holidays, as in previous years, and students will still get the same days off, as planned.

Board members said Tuesday that the new calendar will reflect days the state requires the system to be closed and that it will close on other days that have shown a high level of student and staff absenteeism. Though those days happen to coincide with major Christian and Jewish holidays, board members made clear that the days off are not meant to observe those religious holidays, which they say is not legally permitted.

The main and most noticeable difference will be that the published calendar will not mention any religious holidays by name.

Muslim community leaders have been asking Montgomery school officials for years to close schools for at least one of the two major Muslim holidays.

frog, pot, boiling water....
More of that incremental change and it will just keep growing..

Same formula used on Britain but here the rate has been vastly sped up.
Why is a religious group that represents less than 2% of our population exerting pressure to change traditions, cultural norms and standards for the other 98%???--Tyr
This only happens when that tiny small minority is muslim--and that because the religion murders people all over the damn globe.

Reminds me of the decision to change BC and AD to BCE and CE respectively in order to be sensitive to non-Christians. Nevermind that the entire system is still based on the birth of Jesus, calling it by a different name somehow made sensitive people feel better. Similar situation to this Montgomery business and just as ridiculous.

I suppose there may be a somewhat practical side to this. By removing all religious mentioning, they can tell the Muslim cry babies to go pound sand. Still, it is net loss to our culture and tradition.

This is a net loss to your culture and tradition, which Muslims will then be encouraged to build upon.

Imagine yourself to be a Muslim, devoted to the cause of establishing Islam as a global religion. How would it be any discouragement to you, in your aims, to see a Nation State seemingly move more distant from its theological roots ?

Just more PC idiocy by the leftie idiots in charge of everything from our schools to our local governments. The logical thing would have been to allow one religious holiday for whoever wants to take it on those traditional American holiday days...but to leave the traditional holidays on the calendar. Total BS. The minority inmates are still running the assylum in some areas, despite the bright outlook that the Nov. 4 election brought.

"It is unclear how many Muslim students attend Montgomery schools, but in 2013, Muslim community leaders urged Muslim families and their supporters to keep students home for Eid al-Adha, hoping that the number of absentees would be persuasive as they made their case for a school closing. Montgomery school officials reported that absences for that day — 5.6 percent of students and 5 percent of teachers — were only somewhat higher than a comparable day the previous week."

In a way. This news is great. It also saves the school district the money they would have paid the Union member teachers for all of those NON-EXISTENT holliday's they were formerly getting paid more for anyhow.

Those who were complaining should remember to "BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR."

The school district that my daughter attends has a significant Muslim and Jewish enrollment. No one has ever asked for additional district-wide ethnic holidays.
That is because the district allows any parent to take their child out of school for a significant cultural event with a simple signed request.

*With Powers that be....running our government for the time being.... many Americans are afraid to say ..."Islam is a cult of death and not a Religion"....The sooner Americans get rid of the filthy leftist implanted in our government....The sooner America can rid itself of the demanding... cancerous cult of Islam trying to grow stronger roots here...

Bottom line in all of these school board decisions is. They are afraid to OFFEND some people, and fear the ACLU will sue them.

The ACLU never loses....money. No matter what happens during any court case with the ACLU. They always get paid.

Our nation has become nothing but wussies who allow lawyers to determine everything.

And if anyone hasn't got enough MONEY. They instantly lose. And so does the NATION.

First it was the atheists ... now it's the Muslims ...

I agree Drummond. We see this in a more advanced stage in Europe, especially in France, and it is worrisome to me that we are marching towards the same destiny.
France should have never let them bastards cross the Pyrenees

Yes, and - too late, in my view - France is NOW waking up to the need to maintain its degree of cultural identity. Only now is it passing legislation meant to reverse the demands that 'diversity' makes on a culture.

Diversity itself waters down the identity of a culture. Written into a diversity imperative IS a deference towards other outside cultures. The more it's indulged in, the greater the loss.

Lefties, however, are delighted in the success of any such 'sell-out' political correctness. If or when it gains traction, so the greater the demands from the Left are that demands of diversity are immune from challenge.

....and, goodbye, all that you once were, or, once valued ... because THE TRAITOROUS LEFT demands it !!
