Ran across a pretty awesome pic taken a couple months ago in Anchorage. These were mostly green, but they get pretty brilliant at times with red, purple, even a little yellow mixed in.

When it's super cold out and absolutely silent out in the boonies and all you can hear is your own pulse and the Northern Lights are raging above you, you can hear them crackling faintly, far above you. It's kinda cool.

Sweet, are they visible all year? I'm hoping to see them on my future Alaska run. :)

Nope.

They're the result of solar radiation, so they rock-n-roll all year 'round... but during the summer months it's too bright outside to see them. Sometimes when it's dusky out, you'll see them but you can't be sure if it's just the barest wisp of a cloud up there.

Same goes for 4th of July... it's a big waste of money because you can't see the brilliant colors very well in the daylight, even if it is midnight.
