Fox News strategic analyst says Charlie Hebdo cartoons should have been reprinted

He's 100% correct and note, this is a democrat saying this and I hate agreeing with anyone on Fox. The West is hypocritical as a whole because the terrorists see the them not reprinting these cartoons as a victory and a part of their idea of a takeover. The print media did blow it here and they could've really scored public relations points with reprinting the cartoons. And please, not every democrat romanticizing Islam. I am so disgusted with the entire concept of it right now that it's unbelievable. People a rat-hole country like Yemen wants to tell you what to read, what to write, etc Just think about that- why in the hell are we being held hostage by a rotten country like Yemen?

In today's Sunday New York Times, the "Week in Review supplement that reviews news of the week,....you would have to get to page 11 before the Muslim Massacre is even mentioned,...and it was mentioned in a mere passing of a commentator's story of an absurd abstract concerning the meaning of France within the future of the European Union. Talk about disconnect from the horror of Muslim killers. In a month, it will be as forgotten as the Muslim Massacre of 134 children in Pakistan last month, or the Muslim Massacre in Africa that killed 2,000 people in villages in Africa only last week. Soon, Muslim Massacres will be relegated to footnotes on the weather. We either go to all out war, without reservation, or we will become their hostages in our own countries.

Not only is he right, but the same should be said of Holder Obama and Hillary Clinton. Please recall their support for suppression of free speech and the like when they made one man and his video the scapegoat for terrorism in Egypt and Lybia. Not only did they do that but also in the context of one of the biggest lies in US History...plus the very best of American lives were lost that day. Cowards all three are. Pathetic.

hard to believe that the french were able to kick the muslim invaders out in the middle to late 8th century and to have fallen to a state like this! but it is kind of what you get when you let them in and let them create their own little countries in the middle of your own and yet refuse to do anything due to political correctness /shrug i hope they somehow find the courage to boot every last muslim soft invader out.

He is right, Muslims don't think there is a cost for attacking America. They think they can come to our country and commit terrorist attacks and there will be no repercussions for any other Muslim enablers and associates who are here. They know that our government's pacifist philosophy gives them an unlimited pool of Muslims living in America who are willing to form cells and attack us. We have yet to hold Muslims responsible for the terrorist and mass murderers their mosques continue to generate. No other religion would be so irresponsive and apathetical toward the homicidal criminals they continue to produce.

I loved the part where he showed the cartoons! He did show them right? I mean, he's a cog in the western media machine, right?

"When a man points a finger at someone else, he should remember that four of his fingers are pointing at himself." - Louis Nizer

If this guy is calling the western media cowards, for not reshowing the cartoons. While he isn't reshowing them, himself. What does that make him? Oh right, a Faux News person.

I blame everyone who voted for Obama in the last two elections...It was clear upon his elections this was all going to happen and whether you were lured in by his "Pretty voice" or thought you'd be "cool" by being "Politically correct" and vote for a black man or you actually believed that pulling out of Iraq was what we needed to do.
Muslim Radicals aren't going to leave us alone, they aren't going away....If your afraid to fight for your lives and afraid of being "Politically incorrect" better put on your veils ladies because you will be required to wear them.

Obama is a coward, and the west is weak and they definitely love to romanticize Islam and will not criticize hardly anything and if they do, they sugar coat it so much that you would choke on the sugar before you would even get to the center of the issue.

'radical Islamic groups' also known as 'Muslims who actually follow the Koran'.

As for western media, yeah, with few exceptions the media (America's at least) is pretty cowardly.

Huff Po found it's balls? Didn't see that coming

Western media should have printed millions of copies of all the cartoons!! They should fly bombers with dozens of fighter escorts over muslim nations dropping millions of those printed cartoons.
They should be ready and willing to issue commands to muslim nations to stop the terrorists within their damn borders or else be bombed back into the damn stone-age that they so love!
Instead they'll sit idly by while our traitor President, Barack Hussien Obama helps Iran get nuked up!!
Americans should be marching to Washington by the tens of millions demanding Obama resign from office!!

And none of that will occur, which is why we will have the coming WW3..--Tyr

Have you seen 'all' the cartoons? Many are truly offensive and would not make it through American editors, for reasons that are justified on editorial judgement. It's not common to see the 'f' word in American media-print, radio, tv.

Those that posted or printed some of them, I applaud.

Europe has a long history of allowing truly offensive materials to be published, in the US it's not mainstream though. There it is.

Howard Stern has always pushed the envelope of what Americans will tolerate as a whole. These go beyond that.

Huffington, Washington Post, FOX News have all posted or printed some of the less offensive, including the last cartoons.

I've no problem saying that while I find many things offensive, including burning the flag, the right is there in this country. It would be a slippery slope if there actually were laws to curtail. However, the right to do so, doesn't preclude others from reacting in ways that may well be illegal.

I like when people and corporations, use some discretion.

It's one thing to choose not to publish beastiality or sodomy depictions, another to pass laws.

Actually we are well past this in terms of what must be done. Islam must be forced into a reformation. They will attack the world with ever greater attacks unless forced to stop--only way to stop it is to change what the Koran commands! Only way to effect that change is internally by a Reformation. So what if millions of the ffing vermin fight it and die!!
How is that any different than the fact that they would gladly murder a billion of us to force their world upon us! To force their damn insanity on us.
Reality says it comes down to them or us!! That's the reality that THEY FORCE BY THEIR INSANE BEHAVIOUR!
I am a realist, they are worse than the Nazi's ever were. Myself, if we have to kill a billion of them fine with me!
Its them that say they can not and will not live in peace with us!!
So let it be on their barbaric and insane heads!!

The difference is same as it was in WW2 when we fire-bombed Dresden and dropped nukes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Violent acts done in defense of a campaign to stop evil are not the same as the unforced violent acts that evil engages in.
It is a matter of compulsion(forced), ethics and survival .
Whereas the acts the Muslim scum engage in are not forced , are not ethical by any standard of decency or justice and most definitely not forced!
As for too late--when? Id say we just crossed the last line in the sand, yet part of me still hopes that a firm, unrelenting stand will be taken by a united group of nations to avoid the worst of it(a WW3)...
The problem is we face an enemy that truly thinks a God will give them the ultimate victory. How to teach them the error and insanity of that is already an historic event..

Charles Martel - Rise to Power:

By the end of 715, Charles had escaped from captivity and found support among the Austrasians. Over the next three years, Charles conducted a civil war that culminated in the Battle of Soissons against King Chilperic and the Duke of Aquitaine, Odo the Great. Victorious, Charles was able to gain recognition for his titles as mayor of the palace and duke and prince of the Franks. Over the next five years he consolidated power as well as conquered Bavaria and Alemmania. With the Frankish lands secured, Charles next began to prepare for an anticipated attack from the Muslim Umayyads to the south.

Charles Martel - Battle of Tours:

In 721, the Umayyads first came north and were defeated by Odo at the Battle of Toulouse. Having assessed the situation in Iberia and the Umayyad attack on Aquitaine, Charles came to believe that a professional army, rather than raw conscripts, was needed to defend the realm from invasion. To raise the money necessary to build and train an army that could withstand the Muslim horsemen, Charles began seizing Church lands, earning the ire of the religious community. In 732, the Umayyads moved north again led by Emir Abdul Rahman Al Ghafiqi. Commanding approximately 80,000 men, he plundered Aquitaine.

As Abdul Rahman sacked Aquitaine, Odo fled north to seek aid from Charles. This was granted in exchange for Odo recognizing Charles as his overlord. Mobilizing his army, Charles moved to intercept the Umayyads. In order to avoid detection and allow Charles to select the battlefield, the approximately 30,000 Frankish troops moved over secondary roads toward the town of Tours. For the battle, Charles selected a high, wooded plain which would force the Umayyad cavalry to charge uphill. Forming a large square, his men surprised Abdul Rahman, forcing the Umayyad emir to pause for a week to consider his options.

On the seventh day, after gathering all of his forces, Abdul Rahman attacked with his Berber and Arab cavalry. In one of the few instances where medieval infantry stood up to cavalry, Charles' troops defeated repeated Umayyad attacks. As the battle waged, the Umayyads finally broke through the Frankish lines and attempted to kill Charles. He was promptly surrounded by his personal guard who repulsed the attack. As this was occurring, scouts that Charles had sent out earlier were infiltrating the Umayyad camp and freeing prisoners.

Believing that the plunder of the campaign was being stolen, a large part of the Umayyad army broke off the battle and raced to protect their camp. While attempting to stop the apparent retreat, Abdul Rahman was surrounded and killed by Frankish troops. Briefly pursued by the Franks, the Umayyad withdrawal turned into a full retreat. Charles reformed his troops expecting another attack, but to his surprise it never came as the Umayyads continued their retreat all the way to Iberia. Charles' victory at the Battle of Tours saved Western Europe from the Muslim invasions and was a turning point in European history.

Charles Martel - Later Life:

After spending the next three years securing his eastern borders, Charles moved south to fend off an Umayyad invasion in Provence. In 736, he led a successful campaign that expelled the Umayyads from the region and for the first time integrated heavy cavalry into his formations. From 737, until his death in 741, Charles focused on the administration of his realm and expanding his influence. When he died on October 22, 741, his lands were divided between his sons Carloman and Pippin the Younger. The latter would father the next great Carolingian leader, Charlemagne

Emperor Charles V and Sultan Suleiman were RIVALS as both claimed to be Roman Emperors.

They were ALLIES however in seeking to overthrow the Reformation.

Sultan Suleiman besieged Vienna in 1529, but unusually heavy rains ruined his cannon, and the siege turned out to be a disaster.

Sultan Suleiman I (1494-1566).

Sultan Suleiman I (1494–1566).
Reigned from 1520 to 1566.

Vienna was the key to the conquest of Germany, and Muslim possession of that city would open the way to the subjugation of both Austria and Germany.

The spring and summer of 1529 saw the worst torrential downpours in the history of Europe.

The incessant rain delayed the Muslim army, and the roads became impassable, so the massive siege cannon had to be abandoned.

Our great JEHOVAH came to the help of his servant Martin Luther, by opening the windows of heaven, and causing an incessant rain to slow the progress of the invading Muslims:

As for the roads, which by modern standards were extremely bad at the best of times, the combination of incessant rain and the passage of an army of 250,000 men with their wagons, artillery, horses, mules and camels turned them into quagmires. It was not unusual in the early sixteenth century for roads in countries as civilized and comparatively advanced as France, for instance, to become so bad in winter that those who were foolhardy enough to travel upon them risked being drowned in enormous waterlogged pot-holes or great morasses of liquid mud. It can be imagined, therefore, what a summer like that of 1529, combined with the passage of Suleiman's army, did to the roads of eastern Europe: men slithered and squelched in the mud; wagons and cannon got bogged down and had to be abandoned; horses, mules and camels fell and broke their legs, or stood, stubborn and shivering, while their grooms swore at them and tried to drag them another few yards along the eight-hundred-mile journey upon which they were embarked. (Bridge, Suleiman the Magnificent, p.113).

It was not until September 23 that the waterlogged invading host finally reached Vienna:

Without heavy artillery the Turkish bombardment, which began at once, did little damage to the fortifications of Vienna, old-fashioned as they were, and von Salm felt safe enough at the top of the tall spire of St Stephen's Church, from which vantage point he could watch every movement of the enemy outside the city walls; if a stray ball hit the spire, it was too small and spent to do much harm, and the Count spent most of his time there. The Turks realized that they would never breach the walls by using their artillery alone, and they began mining operations early in the siege, driving shafts beneath the Carinthian Gate and the monastery of St Clare; but some prisoners taken during another sortie on 6 October gave away the secret of these mines, and counter-mines were begun immediately by some German sappers and blown successfully a few days later. (Bridge, Suleiman the Magnificent, p.116).

On October 16, Sultan Suleiman decided that maybe Allah didn't will it after all and abandoned the siege. His entire army retreated to Constantinople, harassed every step of the way by the victorious Austrians and Germans. His losses were about 40,000 men.

No further attempts were made to invade Germany until the 30 Years' War beginning in 1618

They must suffer such a massive defeat that they realize their God (false) has no power..
Each of those defeats forced this realization upon them, especially the defeat Martel inflicted-these savages only understand massive brute force--thus we must destroy them in battle to ever stop them. A fact--for they make it a fact..--Tyr

Tyr, you appeal to history, cannot disagree with the examples you give, in the time they took place. There are lessons to be learned from history, you know I cannot disagree with that.

At the same time, at no time was a war won by fighting a prior war. It's the nature of progress and to a real degree the folly of man.

It's impossible to fight a war for a fighting force the West has against an enemy with no army, infrastructure, actual country. We are left fighting an ideology, which will not be defeated by arms, only from a better ideology.

The drone attacks that certainly have their place, though giving a false picture of success that Obama gets kudos for, are probably the most effective way to go until some serious movement comes in addressing the ideology. While taking out some 'leaders' the drones are likely effective in keeping some 'moderates' from involving themselves in the 'fight' for Caliphate, but are not doing anything to change the minds that the fighters are warring for Islam.

The changes have to be met by the religious leaders, which was the point of Egyptian Presidents remarks to 'trained imams' on January 1. It also needs for the West to stop funding countries, (cough, cough: Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Quatar, Pakistan), that support the literal interpretation of Islam that's been rising for over 100 years.

Do not misinterpret what I'm saying, it's not, "Islam is a peaceful religion that's been hijacked by some few criminals bent on craziness." No, I believe and have said so for years, that while only a few are actually committing or hoping to commit acts of terror, they are supported in their reasoning by many, if not most religious. THAT is why it's an ideological dilemma, which must be won.

I have no problem with a concerted and serious effort being made to instigate religious reform but that effort if serious and large enough would lead to a real war with real armies. The reason is it would united into massive force those muslim hell-bent on destroying Western civilization.
That reality is why I see such a noble effort doomed well before it could have any level of noticeable effect.
To truly know the inherent evil that is Islam one simply must do an in-depth study of Sharia law!
For Sharia law more than any other thing reveals the nature of the savagery that is a core part of Islam..
There is a reason that well over 90% of all muslims fully support Jihad!
And no one will ever believe that over 90% fully support Jihad if they believe the lies ( taqiyya ) the muslims are taught to tell we infidels.. Don't fall for the lies my friend...

Churchill had it right...-Tyr

“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property - either as a child, a wife, or a concubine - must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen: all know how to die. But the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science - the science against which it had vainly struggled - the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.”

― Winston S. Churchill

An English minority leader that gets it on some level:

http://www.breitbart.com/london/2015/01/13/farage-we-must-stand-up-for-our-judeo-christian-culture/

UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage has called (http://www.ukip.org/words_are_not_enough_farage_urges_european_leaders _to_act)on Europe to defend its Judeo-Christian culture. During a debate within the European Parliament on the Paris terror attacks of last week, Mr Farage also laid the blame for the rise of Islamist terrorism on foreign policy and mass immigration....

But, he said, for political leaders, “‘je suis Charlie’ is simply not enough, because we need now to have a honest admission that actually our political decisions have led to much of what has happened.”

Highlighting the campaigns in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and latterly the attempts to arm rebels in Syria, Farage said: “All of this was done, we were told, to make our streets safer, and in fact what we have done is to stir up very deep resentments within much of the Muslim community and it’s had the very opposite effect.” (funding and support for state sponsors)

Mass immigration came under the spotlight too, happening at a pace which made it “frankly impossible for many new communities to integrate and for that I think we have to hold our hands up.

“Perhaps worst of all we have been guilty of weakness, of lack of courage, of lack of assertion in who we are as people, and we have turned a blind eye within many of our minority communities to practices that would not be tolerated in the rest of the population. (This and previous paragraph refers to the alienated within, that have been allowed to, legally to set up their own legal system-Sharia. Does a country remain a country when they allow separate legal system?)

Echoing remarks he made during media appearances last week in the wake of the Paris attacks, Mr Farage said that we now have “a fifth column that is living within our own countries that is utterly opposed to our values, and we how we deal with that problem is vital for the future.”

But Mr Farage urged unity with peaceful Muslims living within Europe, saying: “We must embrace the vast majority of Muslims who themselves are horrified at the civil war that is going on within Islam.” (perhaps unintended but a call for Islam Reformation. If such occured, it would be not only possible, but possible to identify violent sects.)

Well this problem is not going to be answered by all out war, unless a confrontation between 'Muslim' nations and the West eventually ensues. Could be a reason that Iran truly must be prevented from getting nuclear weapons, something Obama & Co seem to be bartering about.

I'm not liberal, nor an isolationist. Talking tough and using your heads can be very different. I wish some of our leaders, (some in Europe and the President of Egypt have begun), would start talking and acting tough. That would not though be bombing Mecca and Medina, nor nuking countries wholesale, unless we actually go to war with a state. ISIS is not a state.

White House: Obama Will Fight Media To Stop Anti-Jihad Articles

President Barack Obama has a moral responsibility to push back on the nation’s journalism community when it is planning to publish anti-jihadi articles that might cause a jihadi attack against the nation’s defenses forces, the White House’s press secretary said Jan. 12.

“The president … will not now be shy about expressing a view or taking the steps that are necessary to try to advocate for the safety and security of our men and women in uniform” whenever journalists’ work may provoke jihadist attacks, spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters at the White House’s daily briefing.

The unprecedented reversal of Americans’ civil-military relations, and of the president’s duty to protect the First Amendment, was pushed by Earnest as he tried to excuse the administration’s opposition in 2012 to the publication of anti-jihadi cartoons by the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The White House voiced its objections in 2012 (http://dailycaller.com/2012/09/19/white-house-slams-french-cartoon-amid-election-time-threats-from-islamists/) after the magazine’s office were burned by jihadis, followings its publication of anti-jihadi cartoons.

Earnest’s defense of tho 2012 objections came just five days after the magazine’s office was attacked by additional jihadis. Eight journalists, two policeman and a visitor were murdered by two French-born Muslims who objected to the magazine’s criticism of Islam’s final prophet.

In 2012, “there was a genuine concern that the publication of some of those materials could put Americans abroad at risk, including American soldiers at risk,” Earnest said.

“That is something that the commander in chief takes very seriously,” he added, before saying that “the president and his spokesman was not then and will not now be shy about expressing a view or taking the steps that are necessary to try to advocate for the safety and security of our men and women in uniform.”

In December, Congress approved and the president signed a $585 billion defense budget to train and equip soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen to defend Americans — including journalists — from foreign threats. The nation’s media industry does not have a defense budget to protect soldiers.

Earnest tried to rationalize the president’s opposition to the publication of anti-jihadist materials as a moral duty.

Whenever journalists consider publishing materials disliked by jihadis, “I think there are a couple of absolutes,” he told the reporters.

The first is “that the publication of any kind of material in no way justifies any act of violence, let alone an act of violence that we saw on the scale in Paris,” he said.

The second absolute is the president’s duty to lobby editors and reporters against publishing anti-jihadi information, he said. ”And there is — this president, as the commander in chief, believes strongly in the responsibility that he has to advocate for our men and women in uniform, particularly if it’s going to make them safer,” Earnest said.

He repeated the two-fisted formulation a moment later. ”What won’t change is our view that that freedom of expression in no way justifies an act of violence against the person who expressed a view. And the president considers the safety and security of our men and women in uniform to be something worth fighting for,” he said.

Throughout the press conference, Earnest repeatedly said the media would be able to decide on its own whether to publish pictures, articles or facts that could prompt another murderous jihad attack by Muslim against journalists.

But he did not say that his government has a constitutional and moral duty to use the nation’s huge military to protect journalists from armed jihadis, but instead hinted strongly that journalists should submit to jihadi threats.

As for 'here' I'm waiting to hear more from our leaders in how to address this type of movement.

OTOH, I am also waiting for media, main or 'new' to start covering the slaughter in Africa, Asia, of Christians and other non-Muslims by the 'true believers.'

...One of several militant groups in Derna, an eastern city known for extremism, swore allegiance to the Islamic State last fall. A few days ago, that affiliate claimed responsibility in the killing of two Tunisian journalists.

...

The captives, as both Christians and Egyptians, were doubly vulnerable. In addition to the sectarian animosity many Muslim extremists feel toward Christians, Libya’s Islamist militias and their allies are currently battling a rival coalition backed in part by the government of Egypt (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/international/countriesandterritories/egypt/index.html?inline=nyt-geo), across the eastern border.

i don't agree with printing or saying inflammatory things just for the sake of pissing people off. ... seriously...
but In solidarity with the dead and to preserve and display our free speech in this country I'd like to HOPE that our president would back American Values Above Islamic. and not pressure PRIVATE biz to bow to foreign or religious pressure on this issue.

move to Saudi Arabia closer to Mecca, stay there.

Well the President of Egypt was asking for revolution of Islam. At what point do you think it's too late? As for nuking Mecca and Medina, what is different in that approach than the Taliban destroying the ancient images of Budda?

John Bolton seems to agree with me on Egytian President:

Egypt's president is a courageous warrior who has the guts to confront radical Islam

Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi followed directly in Anwar Sadat’s footsteps with his speech on New Year's Day that went forcefully against today's Western conventional wisdom regarding Islam and terrorism.M

When Egyptian President Anwar Sadat traveled to Jerusalem in 1977, he shattered decades of isolation and war with Israel to search for peace. No single act in the former general’s remarkable career showed more courage. In 1981, Muslim Brotherhood assassins made Sadat pay with his life for standing against the pan-Arabist conventional wisdom of his era.

This New Year’s Day, Egypt’s current president (also a former general), Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi, followed directly in Sadat’s footsteps. At Cairo’s Al-Azhar University, he spoke forcefully against today’s Western conventional wisdom regarding Islam and terrorism.

Just days later, on Jan. 6, Christmas Eve for Coptic Christians, Al-Sisi spoke at Egypt’s principal Coptic church, an unprecedented appearance by an Egyptian president.

Whether the Muslim Brotherhood or other radicals will make Al-Sisi pay the same price as Sadat remains to be seen. But Al-Sisi’s gestures, for audacity and surprise, are historic. And they demand the West’s recognition and support.

They also present us with a stark contrast. In 2009, Al-Azhar, a noted center of Islamic teachings, co-hosted President Obama’s famous speech to the Muslim world. There, and in countless other speeches, Obama demonstrated an unwillingness to frontally criticize Islamicist terror — and connect it to a significant thread of radical religions faith — perhaps for fear of being seen as attacking Islam itself.

Egypt’s president has destroyed this debilitating misconception, demonstrating that clear-thinking Muslims fully understand how radical Islamicists and the all-too-common religious ideology they espouse constitute a mortal danger to Muslims themselves.
Most dramatically, Al-Sisi asserted: “I say and repeat again that we are in need of a religious revolution.” He stressed that “it’s inconceivable that the thinking that we hold most sacred should cause the entire umma [Muslims worldwide] to be a source of anxiety, danger, killing and destruction for the rest of the world.”

Joining Tawadros II, the Coptic Pope, at Cairo’s main cathedral, Al-Sisi stressed to the worshipers: “It’s important for the world to see this scene, which reflects true Egyptian unity, and to confirm that we’re all Egyptians, first and foremost.”

And he said, “it was necessary for me to come here to wish you a Merry Christmas, and I hope I haven’t disturbed your prayers.” Even former President Hosni Mubarak had never dared to make such an appearance.

Given the Muslim Brotherhood’s long history of murderous attacks on Coptics (who constitute 10% of Egypt’s population), the signal was unmistakable.

Al-Sisi has challenged his faith’s leaders to do what many non-Muslim Westerners have also asked: namely, that Muslims themselves move decisively to prevent radical ideologues from hijacking their religious beliefs.

Meet the honor brigade, an organized campaign to silence debate on Islam

By Asra Q. Nomani January 16 at 8:01 PM
<article>Asra Q. Nomani, a former Wall Street Journal reporter, is the author of “Standing Alone: An American Woman’s Struggle for the Soul of Islam (http://www.amazon.com/Standing-Alone-American-Womans-Struggle/dp/0060832975/ref=as_sl_pc_qf_sp_asin_til?tag=thewaspos09-20&linkCode=w00&linkId=QQOFBHMVJVISNL63&creativeASIN=0060832975).”

“You have shamed the community,” a fellow Muslim in Morgantown, W.Va., said to me as we sat in a Panera Bread in 2004. “Stop writing.”</article>
<article>Then 38, I had just written an essay (http://www.asranomani.com/writings.aspx) for The Washington Post’s Outlook section arguing that women should be allowed to pray in the main halls of mosques, rather than in segregated spaces, as most mosques in America are arranged. An American Muslim born in India, I grew up in a tolerant but conservative family. In my hometown mosque, I had disobeyed the rules and prayed in the men’s area, about 20 feet behind the men gathered for Ramadan prayers.</article>
<article>
Later, an all-male tribunal tried to ban me. An elder suggested having men surround me at the mosque so that I would be “scared off.” Now the man across the table was telling me to shut up.</article>
<article>
“I won’t stop writing,” I said.

It was the first time a fellow Muslim had pressed me to refrain from criticizing the way our faith was practiced. But in the past decade, such attempts at censorship have become more common. This is largely because of the rising power and influence of the “ghairat brigade,” an honor corps that tries to silence debate on extremist ideology in order to protect the image of Islam. It meets even sound critiques with hideous, disproportionate responses.

...

“Honor brigades are wound collectors. They are couch jihadis,” Joe Navarro, a former supervisory special agent in the FBI’s behavioral analysis unit, tells me. “They sit around and collect the wounds and injustices inflicted against them to justify what they are doing. Tragedy unites for the moment, but hatred unites for longer.”

...

Most of the criticism takes place online, with anonymous bloggers targeting supposed Islamophobes. Not long after the cable, a network of bloggers launched LoonWatch, which goes after Christians, Jews, Hindus, atheists and other Muslims. The bloggers have labeled Somali author Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a born Muslim but now an atheist opponent of Islamic extremism, an “anti-Muslim crusader.” Robert Spencer, a critic of extremist Islam, has been called a “vicious hate preacher” and an “Internet sociopath.” The insults may look similar to Internet trolling and vitriolic comments you can find on any blog or news site. But they’re more coordinated, frightening and persistent.

One prominent target of the honor brigade’s attacks was Charlie Hebdo (http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/what-it-means-to-stand-with-charlie-hebdo/2015/01/08/ab416214-96e8-11e4-aabd-d0b93ff613d5_story.html), the French newspaper where several staffers were recently killed by Islamic extremists. According to some accounts, as the killers massacred cartoonists, they shouted: “We have avenged the prophet Muhammad.” The OIC denounced the killings (http://www.oic-oci.org/oicv2/topic/?t_id=9661&t_ref=3843&lan=en), but in a 2012 report (http://mffcoexist.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/islamphobia-report-2012.pdf), it also condemned the magazine’s “Islamophobic satires.” Its then-secretary general, Ihsanoglu, said the magazine’s “history of attacking Muslim sentiments” was “an outrageous act of incitement and hatred and abuse of freedom of expression.”</article>
<article>
Charlie Hebdo is not the only evidence that, to self-appointed defenders of the faith, a call to kill the message can very easily become a plan to kill the messenger. In January 2011, a security officer for the governor of Pakistan’s Punjab province, Salman Taseer (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/01/04/AR2011010400955.html), assassinated him after Taseer defended a Christian woman accused of blasphemy. In court, supporterslaid flowers (http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/05/pakistani-lawyers-shower-murder-suspect-with-roses/?_r=0)on the shoulders of the assassin in approval.

...

For my part, I have continued to write, calling on American Muslims to root out extremism in our communities and arguing that certain passages of the Koran are too antiquated for our times. As I see it, the injunction to “stand out firmly for justice even against . . . your kin” is our divine “See something, say something” mandate. But too often, this passage is misused as a justification for attacking our own.

...

Next month, the Obama administration will hold a conference on challenging violent extremism, and President Obama last year called on Muslim communities (http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/full-text-of-president-obamas-2014-address-to-the-united-nations-general-assembly/2014/09/24/88889e46-43f4-11e4-b437-1a7368204804_story.html) to “explicitly, forcefully and consistently reject the ideology of al-Qaeda and ISIL.” But his administration isn’t framing extremism as a problem directly tied to Islam. Last month, by contrast, Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sissi acknowledged that there was an ideology problem in Islam and said (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEhNarfrlec), “We need to revolutionize our religion.”
When I heard Sissi’s words, I thought: Finally.
