Government school inspectors decided that a Christian school wasn't fit to continue teaching, this reportedly based on comments from a pupil who linked Muslims with terrorism. This they regarded as a 'bigoted' view, for which the school held responsibility, and was made responsible. Consequently, they intend to close the entire school.

This is despite its being regarded as an 'excellent' teaching establishment previously.

Pupils at a Christian school have been branded bigots after a young boy gave the wrong answer when asked what a Muslim was.

Durham Free has been told to close after inspectors branded it an educational failure and said some children displayed ‘discriminatory views’ toward people of other faiths. The boy’s answer to the Muslim question apparently included a reference to terrorism.

But teachers said the verdict was grossly unfair and based on a throwaway and ignorant comment made by a single pupil. They said the school’s Christian ethos made it an easy target for officials who wanted to show they were promoting the Government’s diversity agenda.

A second Christian school in the area has been put into special measures. Inspectors also concluded its children were intolerant after allegedly asking ten-year-old pupils what lesbians ‘did’.

Teachers at Grindon Hall Christian School in Sunderland said the critical Ofsted report came as a shock because it was performing well.

There are claims that some schools – mainly those with a religious ethos or in areas with few ethnic minority pupils – have been put under undue pressure by a requirement to promote British values such as tolerance, fairness, respect for other faiths and the rule of law and democracy.

The rules were introduced to combat extremism in the wake of investigations into the Trojan Horse takeover scandal in Birmingham.

Prebendary Rod Thomas, of the Reform Council and a member of the General Synod, said the plight of the two schools was disturbing.

‘When the future of entire schools can be prejudiced on the basis of what appear to be a few conversations with individual pupils, it raises very serious concerns,’ he added.

‘These two cases highlight important issues about how Ofsted are interpreting the guidance they have been given.’

Simon Calvert of the Christian Institute said: ‘The Government’s British values regime is twisting Ofsted’s priorities out of all proportion. Inspectors are asking all kinds of invasive questions and then issuing reports that the parents whose children attend the school don’t recognise.’

Durham Free School, which has 94 pupils aged 11 to 13, was praised by then education secretary Michael Gove after it opened in September 2013. But when it was inspected in November, Ofsted failed it on a wide range of factors including poor teaching, attainment and behaviour. ‘Standards are low and progress is inadequate,’ inspectors said. ‘Students’ achievement is weak.’

It will now close at Easter after Education Secretary Nicky Morgan announced her department was withdrawing its funding.

The inspecting team, which was led by Joan Hewitt, concluded: ‘Leaders are failing to prepare students for life in modern Britain. Some students hold discriminatory views of other people who have different faiths, values or beliefs from themselves.’ But according to teachers, the team based this view on speaking to the boy of around 12 who was asked about Muslims during a group discussion. His answer included a reference to terrorism. Acting headmaster Julian Eisner, 57, said: ‘The pupil’s reply displayed a very disappointing level of ignorance but, in the context, did not provide evidence of a discriminatory attitude.

‘The school wholeheartedly agreed with Ofsted inspectors that there is progress to be made to guarantee all pupils articulate and share the tolerant attitudes that are embedded in the school’s Christian ethos.’

Petrina Douglas, who is a parent governor, said: ‘It feels like the school has been made a scapegoat. Durham is primarily white British so knowledge of other cultures is not as prevalent. But I don’t think the children are bigoted.’

Chris Gray, principal of Grindon Hall, said: ‘It is now well known that the manner in which inspectors questioned our pupils in November was hostile, inappropriate and raises serious safeguarding issues. Ofsted’s approach to us was negative at every stage, as if the data collected had to fit a predetermined outcome.’

It seems evident from this that our Government isn't prepared to tolerate any school which doesn't promote total acceptance of Islam. Schoolchildren are required to leave school pre-programmed with a State-approved worldview !

If you were a British citizen, and you input the above message into any UK public forum, I'm in no doubt that our police would at minimum 'take an interest in you'. Chances are they'd interview you, and a lack of repentance on your part would see them take action against you.

Inspectors said there was a "dysfunctional" relationship between head teacher Balwant Bains and governors which was hindering the school.

The letter, which purports to outline "Operation Trojan Horse", has subsequently been sent to at least another 12 schools in the city - all believed to be vulnerable to takeover.

It states that parents could be encouraged to turn against the leadership team if they are told the school is "corrupting their children with sex education, teaching about homosexuals, making their children pray Christian prayers and [carrying out] mixed swimming and sport".

Among various claims in the letter is one that the group has "caused a great amount of organised disruption in Birmingham and as a result we have our own academies and are on the way to getting rid of more head teachers and taking over their schools".

So you see, what we have in this example is something quite different .. an attempt at purposeful and systematic subversion of teaching standards, and involving not one, but a range of schools in Birmingham. With the ousting of those who might oppose their agenda encouraged.

Teachers are being given the opportunity to “inspect” their own Ofsted inspectors through an internet site being launched today by a teaching union.

The NASUWT wants teachers observed during an inspection to go online immediately afterwards and critique their inspector. They will be able to report on the inspector’s behaviour and whether they followed Ofsted’s inspection rules.

“The online tool we have launched today is a major step in the strong resistance that now needs to be mounted against punitive accountability,” said Chris Keates, NASUWT general secretary.

“It will empower teachers and school leaders to take back some professional control.”

The move is the latest in a series attacks on the embattled inspectorate, which yesterday was condemned by Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers union (ATL), as “a busted flush” in need of radical transformation.

Being 'non-PC' can INDEED close a school ! Why on earth would you think otherwise ? Schools have to obey the law, and many of our laws these days are VERY 'PC'. OFSTED likes to be a watchdog on such things, and in fact, has its mandate to be such.

One of the Government’s flagship free schools - accused of imposing strict Islamic practices - has closed after the first day of an inspection by education standards watchdog Ofsted.

Inspectors are understood to have confronted Stuart Wilson, the acting headteacher of the Al-Madinah school in Derby with a list of shortcomings. This led to him closing the school and sending the pupils home.

A statement on the school’s website said the closure was due to a “health and safety issue” but Ofsted sources indicated it was more of a “safeguarding” issue, ensuring the well-being of the pupils.

The school, which opened in September last year as part of the second tranche of free schools launched by Education Secretary Michael Gove, had earlier faced allegations from former staff members that girls had been forced to sit at the back of the class,

Unnamed female members of staff also said they had been forced to conform to a strict dress code including wearing a head scarf or hijab – regardless of whether they were Muslims. However, the interim headteacher said he had not received any complaints about the dress code and denied boys and girls were segregated in class.

Today, as the Ofsted inspection entered its second and final day with interviews of staff and the acting head as well as scrutiny of its policy documents, it was unclear how long the school would be closed for.

When it first opened last year, the school claimed it was the first Muslim free school in the country to offer education to pupils aged from four to 18. Its first head, Andrew Cutts-McKay, left after less than a year in post.

A statement on the website from Mr Wilson said: “Owing to a health and safety issue, I have taken the decision to close the school... until I am confident that all children are safe on site.

“As parents, you will be informed directly, and on the website, when you are able to send your children back to school. Assuring you we have your children’s best interests at heart.”

However, in addition to the Ofsted report – which is expected to be published within 25 days – the school is also facing an investigation by the Education Funding Agency, which funds all free schools.

A spokesman for the department said: “We were already investigating this school before allegations became public. We discussed the problems with Ofsted and it launched an immediate inspection. We are waiting for Ofsted’s final report and considering all legal options.”

Ofsted said it could not disclose its concerns until the inspection had ended, saying only it had “made some findings and shared them with the principal”.

The school’s doors were locked today with signs on the door saying it was having an Ofsted inspection. A spokesman said he did not know when it would reopen and declined to comment further.

One 39-year-old woman, who arrived at the school with her two sons, aged 11 and seven, said: “We’ve been told the school has been temporarily closed for health and safety reasons. They haven’t told us what they are. They said the school should be open to children by next Monday.”

The mother, who was pleased with the school, said she had been told by one teacher that girls were made to sit on one side of the room and boys the other. “It is not a problem,” she said. As far as she was aware, it was not compulsory for staff to wear the hijab.

Mohammed Ali, whose six-year-old daughter attends the school, said: “It has been one month that my child has been attending this school and just yesterday they give us a one-line letter from the principal saying they are going to shut the school without any reasons. We need answers.

'Health and safety' may be the officially-designated reason. But there's more going on there than meets the eye, obviously. Undoubtedly, 'PC' concerns are also involved.
