Taking Ben Carson Seriously

The 2016 campaign’s most interesting long shot

JAN 26, 2015, VOL. 20, NO. 19 • BY FRED BARNES (http://www.weeklystandard.com/author/fred-barnes)

As Jeb Bush, Mitt Romney, and untold others ramp up their campaigns for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, they’re going to be in for a surprise. A candidate neither they nor the political class regard as a serious contender is ahead of them in organizing a well-financed and unique campaign operation. It includes a “director of campaign culture” to motivate the staff and make sure the campaign reflects the vision and character of the candidate.

That candidate is Ben Carson, the African-American conservative and retired brain surgeon. His White House bid is not a lark. It only seems that way. Carson was more active in 2014 than any other potential Republican candidate. Now he is set to create a presidential exploratory committee and announce his candidacy sometime before May 1.

Candidates like Carson from the outskirts of electoral politics, who’ve never before run for office, are routinely dismissed as dreamers. They’re bucking history. They’re bound to wash out after the first caucus and primary, if not earlier. And in choosing Terry Giles, a Houston businessman with no political experience, as his campaign chairman, Carson only added to skepticism about his candidacy.

But Carson, 63, is no Herman Cain, the Georgia businessman who ran for the GOP nomination in 2012. Cain flew solo, without a campaign organization. His candidacy went nowhere. Carson is different. He has substantial name identification. He can raise money. His poverty-to-prominence story is compelling. He has a grassroots following. He is fluent on national issues.

He seems like he'd be a great executive; would do the right thing for the nation.

As a man of high morals he will not be allowed to win should he run....
It is a rigged game now and has been ever since they set up the bamscum the first time.
Election of the President is the big apple, I believe the powers in now(dems, globalists and other vermin) set up a system to destroy certain candidates chances of winning.
Gaffer and I used to discuss this often. We both believed this nation is headed for 1. a future civil war or else 2. will fall without even a whimper.
Myself, I believe it will get so bad that some will rise up ,but not enough and they will be crushed. When that will occur is anybody's business.
The fact is the corruption and amount of outside (foreign) influence/corruption hidden within the Federal government is massive. -Tyr

I think he's got the right line of thinking, but he is gaffe prone. Not as bad as Biden, certainly, but he slips when he goes off-script.

My first choice is Walker. He's proven that he can fix a horrible liberal mess in short order... that's something none of the other candidates have demonstrated, and that's exactly what we have going on a national level - years of inept liberal mistakes.

If Carson wins the primary I'll support him, for sure.

I like Walker too!

My opinion of Walker just got even higher.

In 2001–2002, Walker and fellow state assembly member Michael Huebsch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Huebsch)objected to the hiring (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamyi_Witch_hiring_controversy) of a state employee, Rev. Jamyi Witch, on the basis of her religious beliefs as a Wiccan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiccan).[22] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Walker_%28politician%29#cite_note-AU2002-22)[23] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Walker_%28politician%29#cite_note-SeattleTimes2002-23) Walker claimed that Witch's hiring as a prison chaplain raised "both personal and political concerns" because she "practice[d] a religion that actually offends people of many other faiths".[24] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Walker_%28politician%29#cite_note-24) Walker and Huebsch were ultimately unsuccessful in terminating Witch's chaplaincy or employment.[22] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Walker_%28politician%29#cite_note-AU2002-22)

TOPEKA Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker won the two presidential straw polls conducted by the Kansas Republican Party at its state convention in Topeka this weekend.

The party held two polls: one for state committee members and another that was open to all convention attendees for a $2 fee. Walker won both races, taking 83 of a possible 182 votes among the state committee members, about 46 percent, and 253 votes in the donation-based race, which put him four votes ahead of Ben Carson.

Walker, recently elected to his second term as governor, gained national attention during his first term for his fights against public employee unions over collective bargaining. He defeated a recall attempt in 2012.

Carson, a physician who has become known for his opposition to the Affordable Care Act, came in second in both races. He collected 46 votes among state committee members.

Personally. Based on how I feel about ALL Politicians (all of whom..I distrust). Dr. Carson is

the One I enjoy listening to as he shares what I believe are Honest, Proven Facts about

America, and Americans today.

If the Election was tomorrow. He would get my vote. WAIT A SECOND!

That can't be. Me, voting for a Black man as our President? How can a RACIST like me, stoop so liberally Low?

LongTerm. That's like the old hypocrisy gag many people usually get caught-in...like Archie Bunker...when they say "I have nothing against Blacks. Some of my best friends are Black!"

It's non-committal, and a typical, liberally shrewd way to convince (themselves) they aren't really as racist as some might think.

For example. I have no problem telling anyone WHY I dislike Obama. But most of the Liberals I try to tell such things instantly tell me I am RACIST, because Obama is Black.
When, the truth is. Obama is not, and never has been qualified to be our President. He has been lying to ALL OF AMERICA since before he was elected. And I DO NOT LIKE, ADMIRE, or TRUST Liars..no matter what color their skin may be. Obama's policies suck, and he is determined to DESTROY OUR COUNTRY.
Why would I lie, like him, and tell anyone I Like him?

Pay attention, I said I didn't know. What is his position on corporate tax reform? What is his position on education? How would he reform Social Security and Medicare? Does he know anything about foreign policy? Does he have experience running a large bureaucracy like a state? Does he have the ability to run an effective campaign?

Governors are generally better candidates for POTUS.

You should tell everybody who voted for Obama what you said above. He wasn't, and still isn't qualified to answer any of those questions either. UNLESS...you are an Uninformed, Uneducated, Easily-led, Racist American.
