`....San Francisco specialty bookshop Borderlands Books is going out of business. The store will close its doors no later than March 31, 2015, but may close earlier, depending on how quickly the inventory can be sold. Owner Alan Beatts explains:

The recent change in San Francisco minimum wage law will prevent the store from being financially viable no later than July of 2018 (at which point our payroll will have increased by roughly 39%). It is quite possible that the store would lack viability before that date, as wages will increase incrementally between now and then. Rather than wait, we have chosen to close now to allow us to get the most value from the businesses. Though all of us at Borderlands support the concept of a living wage in principle, the minimum wage law passed in San Francisco makes it very difficult, if not impossible, to run a viable business when retail pricing is set by publishers and our main competitors are companies such as Amazon.com.`

Let the raging fools wallow in their own misery. They wanted to get down with the pigs and wallow. So now let them reap the results of their massive stupidity that they call enlightenment!
Labor costs drive the cost of the product or the service.
These supposed geniuses can not figure out why its not feasible to pay an untrained, inexperienced worker with no appreciable skills 20 bucks an hour to simply flip burgers!

Such stupidity once made us laugh but now , now that its the rage from these loons and from our own government it is a very serious matter. As its being used to change the culture, to destroy the foundation of this nation. --Tyr

You can't make the Under-educated, Un-educated, Easily-led, dependents on Government PAY ATTENTION.

The people in Washington Who call themselves Representatives, and Senators, gave all of their Uselessness to the person in the White House who doesn't care about ANY AMERICANS, no-matter what they LOOK like.

Obama, and Congress...namely the Democrats were only interested in GETTING VOTES. So, they promised the UNEDUCATED who flip burgers, make Fries, and serve meals they would GET A RAISE, no employer could ever afford for very long.

Result. Small, and large businesses will be forced OUT OF BUSINESS, and, DEAR OLD UNCLE SAM will become the EMPLOYER who tells the American public..."THOSE FRIES, COKES, AND BURGERS WILL NOW......LITERALLY....COST US AN "ARM and a LEG".

Who wants to buy a HAPPY MEAL tomorrow for FIFTY (Obama)BUCKS????

it's not even about education.

Look at who is doing the Educating today? FOOLS. Literally Fools are 'educating' our population. Our senior most elected officials are universally well-educated yet they are boobs. Why are they in office? The voting population are boobs. They vote for things that are patently false, but promised. When our senior-most politicians stand up and say a proposed budget, for example, is GOOD for the nation, Boobs rally to his/her side! YES!!! They chant - WE WANT FREE SHIT! FREE SHIT FOR EVERYONE!!

Despite the politician knowing the opposite is true, the politician flat-out LIES to the nation to rally the boobs (mmm....boob rally...nice).

There's no hope, folks. Two decades from now Socialist/Communist US of A as one of the great evils to Liberty. Thank you Liberals; you've fucked the nation, and society, to the point the country is burning why you play-on. Fiddle-away, assholes.

How did we ever get to this point where such buffoons are heralded as enlightened leaders?

respectfully disagree.

We got here not because of political actions; we got here because people are idiots. People are lazy. Lazy idiots do not dare make the effort to correct THEIR kids. Thus, we have lazier, more-idiotic people. And so on.

I'll not argue against that being a main component in it. Yet, that is also a product of decades of a liberal indoctrinated school system. Those liberal decrees integrated into that school system by and large came from dem politicians and administrative officials.

Poor parenting certainly is a major factor but in the not too distant past, school instruction and teacher's influences countered a damn lot of that. Not so much so today as now colleges are turning out school teachers that are only truly educated up to the level of what was a sixth grade level back in the 50's /60's. Just damn sad...-Tyr

Well let's just think for a moment. Twenty nine states have a higher minimum wage than the Federal minimum. Several small book stores closed in the past few years for.....lack of sales.

Your two points don't add up; they have nothing to do with one-another.

First point you made: 29 states have higher min wage than the federal min wage.

Good deal. Got it.

Several small stores closed in the past few years.

I suppose that's true. It's like saying "Dozens of small businesses have closed since 1985". Probably a point nobody would debate.

for.....lack of sales

Oh. Is that so? You know that to be fact? Hrm. Is it lack of sales the problem in every case...OR lack of MORE sales. See, the sales might have been the same, or even slightly MORE...but the problem is, the current level, or increased level of sales was NOT enough to compensate for the Government MANDATING increased costs. Now, do we know the reason Businesses stay in business? The reason is "To make money". When the government mandates cause financial hardship, businesses can, and do close-shop.

SO - Go ahead and call for $15/hr minimum wage. The people who remain employed after businesses cut staff MIGHT benefit. Then again...When, say, FORD motor company raises the wages of its employees I, as a business owner, can now raise PRICES of everything I sell. Yay! I get MORE MONEY!!! Except...fewer people might be working outside of Ford. So the 100 Ford customers I have who now make $5/hr MORE will maybe spend $10 more each, per month. But the 500 non-ford customers I have making $10/hr more has now become 300 non-ford customers because 2/3rds of the 500 non-ford folks are now unemployed thanks to the 'living wage' bullshit. Do they spend more? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe they're scared they too will lose their job.

Only "winner" - The .gov collects more taxes! Yay. Give MORE citizen money to the piece of crap fools elected by fools.

(shrug).

Yes, I do know that for a fact! How, because two were small specialty book stores and two were used book stores either run by an individual owner or husband & wife with NO employees.

Most of the states with a higher than Fed minimum wage are significantly lower than $15 an hour and do help more than increased taxation.

This thread can be defined in just TWO words many of the members of DP have ignored, every time I have said them here. Maybe just ONE of you out there can get the message?

Those two words are: WE'RE SCREWED!
