My cat freaks when you "peek" at him. I'll hide behind the couch and then peek around the edge until my eyes literally just barely peek around the edge. He gets down on his front paws and does the ass wiggle and then I move back. When I go to stick my head back out again he usually is running closer and jumps on me. He loves that game. The funny part is that he'll run at me like 100 miles per hour and then hit me with one of his paws ever so gently. Odd little bird at times.
