The Gallant Hours IMO outstanding flick. a docudrama. Unusual for a war film, The Gallant Hours has no battle scenes. All the fighting takes place off-screen, and there is an emphasis throughout the film on logistics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logistics) and strategy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_strategy) rather than the tactics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_tactics) and combat (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combat). Fundamentally, the film becomes a battle of wills and wits between the dogged ADM William Halsey and his brilliant Japanese counterpart, Admiral Yamamoto (James T. Goto, who was also Technical Advisor for the film). For dramatic effect, the mission to kill Yamamoto (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Isoroku_Yamamoto) is made contemporaneous with the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Battle_of_Guadalcanal). In fact, Yamamoto was killed over Bougainville (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bougainville_Island) five months later in April 1943. (wiki)

The Silent Enemy. Gibraltar 1958

`The story begins with a dramatisation of the Italian manned torpedo raid on Alexandria (1941) in which two British battleships were sunk. The British are worried that this new Italian tactic will give the enemy naval supremacy in the Mediterranean. From Spain, an Italian expert on underwater operations is secretly watching the British base in Gibraltar and planning new attacks.
Maverick diver Lionel Crabb is brought in to head the British response. He creates a team of divers to intercept the Italian attacks and defuse the bombs. The Italians plan a major attack on a British convoy, but Crabb and another diver manage to infiltrate the Spanish docks from which the Italians are planning the attack, identifying the ship (the Olterra) which the Italians attack from. Crabb leads an unauthorised pre-emptive strike on the ship carrying the torpedoes and destroys it, winning the George Medal.
The British divers are shown as using Davis Submerged Escape Apparatus.`
In the film Crabb dives on the wreck of a recently crashed B-24 Liberator that had gone into the sea just after taking off from Gibraltar Airport. This scene was based on the accident in 1943 in which Polish general Władysław Sikorski was killed. In the film the submerged wreck of an Avro Shackleton is used as a stand-in for the Liberator.
4. The part in the film showing the Liberator crashing into the sea is at Camp Bay. The crash actually happened off the eastern end of the runway crashing into the Mediterranean Sea.`

The Postman 1997 Kevin Costner

In the year "2013" civilization has all but destroyed itself. After a war that decimated the government and most of the population of the United States (possibly the world) people struggle to survive against starvation and rogue groups of armed men. One such group is called the Holnists. This group is bigger than any other and their leader, General Bethlehem, has delusions of ruling the country. A drifter is captured by the group and forced to join. He escapes at the first chance and happens on a mail jeep with a skeleton in it. The skeleton is wearing a postal uniform and the drifter takes it to keep him warm. He also finds a mailbag and starts conning people with old letters. The hope he sees in the people he delivers to changes his plans and he decides that he must help bring the Holnists down.

Shōgun is an American television miniseries (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miniseries) based on the 1975 novel of the same name (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh%C5%8Dgun_(novel)) byJames Clavell (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Clavell), who also was the executive producer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Executive_producer) of the miniseries. It was first broadcast in the United States on NBC (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBC) over five nights between September 15 and September 19, 1980. To date, it is the only USA TV show/miniseries to be filmed entirely on location in Japan; sound stage (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_stage) shooting was also done in Japan at Toho (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toho) Company, Ltd., studios.
The miniseries is loosely based on the adventures of English navigator William Adams (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Adams_(sailor)), who journeyed to feudal Japan in 1600 and rose to high rank in the service of the Shōgun (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh%C5%8Dgun). The miniseries follows Englishman John Blackthorne's transforming experiences and political intrigues in feudal Japan in the early 17th century. (wiki)

Twilight Zone
"He's Alive"
IMO this one of was the most chilling episodes. the last few scenes creep you out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDQDMxBk68A

introSerling:
"Portrait of a bush-league Führer named Peter Vollmer, a sparse little man who feeds off his self-delusions and finds himself perpetually hungry for want of greatness in his diet. And like some goose-stepping predecessors he searches for something to explain his hunger, and to rationalize why a world passes him by without saluting. That something he looks for and finds is in a sewer. In his own twisted and distorted lexicon he calls it faith, strength, truth. But in just a moment Peter Vollmer will ply his trade on another kind of corner, a strange intersection in a shadowland called the Twilight Zone...."

ending
Serling:
"Where will he go next? This phantom from another time, this resurrected ghost of a previous nightmare. Chicago? Los Angeles? Miami, Florida? Vincennes, Indiana? Syracuse, New York? Any place, everyplace, where there's hate, where there's prejudice, where there's bigotry. He's alive. He's alive so long as these evils exist. Remember that when he comes to your town. Remember it when you hear his voice speaking out through others. Remember it when you hear a name called, a minority attacked, any blind, unreasoning assault on a people or any human being. Deepwater [full movie] (2005)
Started watching this movie fully expecting to see navy submarines and military sea battles, and the like. The movie title is why I thought it was a navy/ocean genre. But there are no subs and sea battles in this movie. However, for those who like a really good suspense, thriller, drama flick, you need to check this out! The major twist comes at the end. Well worth watching to the end, to be sure!.....For a free movie this is good value. The late Peter Coyote is at his 'over the top' best in an intriguing and unusual thriller about a drifter who meets a casino owner, in sticks somewhere in the US. There is little that is predictable or pretentious in this well made drama of life on the run`

The Fog (2005) - Full Movie (HD)

Horror
The centenary of the small seaside town of Antonio Bay, California is approaching. One hundred years ago, the wealthy leper Blake bought the clipper ship Elizabeth Dane and sailed with his people to form a leper colony. However, while sailing through a thick fog, they were deliberately misguided by a campfire onshore, steering the course of the ship toward the light and crashing her against the rocks. While the townsfolk prepare to celebrate, the victims of this heinous crime that the town's founding fathers committed rise from the sea to claim retribution. Under cover of the fog, they carry out their vicious attacks, searching for what is rightly theirs.

The Final Countdown

Recalling from memory, this is about an American Aircraft Carrier, on maneuvers in the Pacific on a Sunday morning, December 7, when they go through a vortex. They lose all of their high frequency communications. Their equipment is OK, but they are not receiving any signals. Then, the radioman picks up some low frequency signals: a radio station from Hawaii, playing music from the early 1940's and talking about the weather. Facing other revelations, they begin to realize that they have been transported back in time. Checking the time, the Captain asks the Navigator, who is a historian, to locate on their map where the Japanese Fleet would be in the Pacific. The Navigator pointed out an approximate location, and the Captain ordered two armed jet planes to fly over the area, high and unobserved, to see if they can see anything. Sure enough, there they were. They radio back, asking permission to take them out: the whole fleet.

Dr. Caligari, a mysterious hypnotist, appears to control every move of his bizarre, clairvoyant sleepwalker, but does he?>>> seminal horror movie, THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI was hailed upon its initial release as the first film to elevate the cinema from the realm of popular entertainment to that of high art.

The story is introduced with a title: "A tale of the modern reappearance of an 11th century myth involving the strange and mysterious influence of a mountebank monk over a somnambulist." Two men are seated outdoors on a bench when Jane (Lil Dagover) passes by. Francis (Friedrich Feher), the
younger man, identifies the girl to his companion as his fiancee and begins to tell him a story:

One day a traveling fair comes to town and Francis and his friend, Alan (Hans Heinz von Twardowski), decide to take it in. Meanwhile, Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss), a member of the carnival, is applying for a permit at the town hall, where he is treated rudely by the town clerk. That evening the
clerk is murdered.

At the fairgrounds Francis and Alan attend Caligari's strange exhibit: a sleepwalker named Cesare (Conrad Veidt) whom the doctor keeps in a coffin-shaped cabinet. Caligari claims that Cesare can see into the future and challenges the audience to question the somnambulist. Alan
asks, "How long have I to live?" Cesare answers, "Until tomorrow's dawn." On the way home Alan and Francis meet Jane, a mutual friend. After she departs, the two young men acknowledge that they are both in love with her, that they must let her choose between them, and that--whatever her.....More:

Not so much weird, but I like old stuff I saw as a kid. I've got over a hundred movies from mostly the 30s. Bunch from the 20s. Phantom of the Opera is my favorite.

I just try to keep in perspective and remember when I came from. I saw the original Dracula with Bela Lugosi when I was about 7 and it scared the piss out of me. It's just some boring old b&w white movie to kids nowadays. I didn't even know what color TV WAS when I was 7. Rich people owned them. There was no Freddie or Jason. We got 30s and 40s Universal monster movies and the cheesy Hammer Films remakes. When we first got a color tube I was like WTF? I was 10 years old.

Color does NOT do a lot for some things. And I don't care for modern horror movies. Once they turned into slasher type crap, I was out. I've seen very few of them, and most by accident/coincidence not choice.

Great Movie!

`The Last Time (2006) (Starring Michael Keaton, Daniel Stern, Brendan Fraser)`

FULL RARE out-of-print indy film starring Michael Keaton, Daniel Stern, Brendan Fraser & Amber Valletta. Cutthroat salesmen, craziness, and a good script.

From Comments:

"I was really surprised to find this quality of a movie on youtube. Movie was very interesting. From moment one, I knew the honey trap was there. I just didnt know how she was going to be used. What i got out of this was that its whats inside that makes a person.
Keatons character was literature and teaching.....Even the fake bozo had drawing skills. Thats where the real fuel, value, is; within ourselves. When the girl gets old, takes off after more bread, when the guy falls for a new trap, the car rusts, house falls apart. unless we've invested in ourselves(in fact it was a slogan in the managers office), we tend to turn to self destruction. I know its not easy to resist beauty and wealth. Yet, they are all temporary. "

"Working in this industry it is this cut throat it is this cruel and it is this lucrative. I haven't worked with people this ice cold but I have seem similar tactics used. I left it because I couldn't get into this type of character. All the actors in this film played their parts excellently. I was convinced all the way thru until he talks about the elephants and then I put two and two together. Great film, something to study if you want to go into this dark world because that's exactly what it is. Nothing sunshine about it."

The Killing Fields (1984) Plot Summary
New York Times reporter Sydney Schanberg (Sam Waterston) is on assignment covering the Cambodian Civil War, with the help of local interpreter Dith Pran (Haing S. Ngor) and American photojournalist Al Rockoff (John Malkovich). When the U.S. Army pulls out amid escalating violence, Schanberg makes exit arrangements for Pran and his family. Pran, however, tells Schanberg he intends to stay in Cambodia to help cover the unfolding story -- a decision he may regret as the Khmer Rouge rebels move in.

Manfried von Richtofen was, and is still is, one of the greatest pilots in history. Tallying over 80 kills, he was the German Ace of Aces, to use the American term. He is credited with being the father of the modern fighter and interceptor tactics.

...Though the history books say that a Canadian pilot shot him down, it was an Australian AA gunner that killed him. He was one of the only known German pilots buried by the British, French, and Australians with full military honors. The pity is that his plane was ripped apart for souvenirs. It would have made an incredible museum piece.`

Old TV show western action....

`Wanted Dead or Alive Season 1 Episode 01`

`Wanted Dead or Alive Season 1 Full Episode 1x01 - While pursuing Carl Martin, Josh is falsely accused of aiding in a jailbreak and the marshal's murder.

Steve Mcqueen ( Josh Randall ) is a Civil War veteran with a sawed-off rifle as a holstered weapon makes a living as a bounty hunter in the Wild West of the 1870s.
TV western series that launched Steve McQueen's movie stardom holds up well even after 50 years. Guest stars among the best on TV at the time and the story lines are varied enough to keep your interest and different enough from competing series to stand out.

McQueen's character of Josh Randall is a Confederate veteran and bounty hunter with a soft heart. He often donates his earnings to the needy and helps his prisoners if they have been wrongly accused. Randall carries a shortened Winchester Model 1892 carbine, called the "Mare's Leg," in a holster patterned after "gunslinger" rigs then popular in movies and television. Randall had the ability to draw and fire this gun with blazing speed, as fast as, or in many cases much faster than, his adversaries with handguns that were much smaller. Two Mare's Legs were used in the series, differing in the shape of the lever, round versus oval.

For several episodes in 1960 Randall had a sidekick named Jason Nichols (Wright King) a former deputy sheriff turned bounty hunter. They worked very well together onscreen, sharing a brotherly chemistry audiences enjoyed. By the start of the third season, Nichols was no longer anywhere to be seen. The episode called, "The Partners", where Nichols killed three men, much to the chagrin of Randall who felt the men could have been taken alive, has been speculated to be the episode that broke up the partnership, but was actually only the second episode where Wright King was shown and far from the last episode in which he appeared.`

Click on site let it load......

"Ten strangers converge in an isolated desert motel. A storm is raging, the roads are flooded, the landlines are down and the single cell phone is out of juice. And a diabolical killer is stalking and killing them, one by one.

But the big question isn't who will survive — it's who they are. George York (John C. McGinley) is on a trip with his wife Alice (Leila Kenzle) and little boy (Bret Loehr) when they get a flat and stop by the roadside to fix it. Distracted by the spoiled, over-the-hill B-movie actress (Rebecca DeMornay) he's ferrying back to Los Angeles, limo driver Ed (John Cusack) mows Alice down.

Ed offers to drive them to a hospital, but the roads are washed out and everyone's forced to take refuge at a rundown, no-name motel along with several other guests. Paris (Amanda Peet) is a hooker looking for a new start, bickering newlyweds Ginny and Lou (Clea DuVall, William Lee Scott) are already beginning to think their spur-of-the-moment Las Vegas wedding was a mistake, and Officer Rhodes (Ray Liotta) runs out of gas while transporting a grinning multiple murderer (Jake Busey). Meanwhile, a handful of legal professionals have gathered elsewhere for a highly irregular midnight sanity hearing.
Convicted serial killer Malcolm Rivers (Pruitt Taylor Vince) is scheduled for execution in less than 24 hours, but his lawyer has uncovered suppressed evidence that supports an insanity plea; his doctor (Alfred Molina) has prepared an impassioned appeal. "

After his death, she prefers to enjoy 'freedom' again, with cocky outsider 'Tea Cake' as playmate, and not just at chess. They even face the risks of seasonal labor. ....

......Cockneys vs Zombies Movie

`I really enjoy a good British dark comedy and this flick certainly delivers. The Brits have done a number of

other really good zombie movies, but none quite like this one.

You've got a group of senior citizens in a <nobr style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14.6667px; line-height: 13.6889px; background-color: rgb(250, 250, 250);">nursing home (http://www.glocktalk.com/#)</nobr> on one hand and one of the senior citizen's

grandchildren on the other, along with their crew. The old folks home is being shut down and the

grandchildren and <nobr style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14.6667px; line-height: 13.6889px; background-color: rgb(250, 250, 250);">friends decide (http://www.glocktalk.com/#)</nobr> to rob a bank, to help save the old folks home. In the middle of this, a zombie

apocalypse occurs.

The movie has got the guy who played Bricktop in the movie Snatch in it. He absolutely makes the movie.

Anyway, there is a lot of good old, wholesome zombie slaughter, along with a good bit of comedy as only the

Brits can deliver it. In keeping with British tradition, there is even a brawl between two groups of zombies

wearing rival <nobr style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: 'PT Sans', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14.6667px; line-height: 13.6889px; background-color: rgb(250, 250, 250);">soccer team (http://www.glocktalk.com/#)</nobr> jerseys and face paint. ;)`

I watched it. Thanks, indago. There isn't much to do at 5am, but I enjoyed the old television program.

I seem to recall when I was a little girl, that Gunsmoke was on Sunday nights. We didn't have a TV, but I remember them changing Sunday night worship service to a better time so people would come to church and not stay home to watch Gunsmoke. Maybe I remember it wrong.

It wasn't on Sundays. Saturday and got moved to Monday. Friday and Saturday were prime time in the 60s. They've been junk time since the mid-late 80s when partying became in style. The networks don't put on anything during party time nor NFL time anymore. They just toss some junk out there as filler.

Bonanza came on Sunday.

The Cruel Sea (1953) probably the best Brit war movie about the battle of the Atlantic IMO. its in my collection. so far I can't find the full Movie.

The film portrays the conditions in which the Battle of the Atlantic was fought between the Royal Navy and Germany's U-boats. It is seen from the viewpoint of the British naval officers and seamen who served in convoy escorts. The film begins with a voice-over by Ericson (Jack Hawkins). the opposite story to this was told in 1981 Das Boot the hunter and the hunted. trailer

Early 30s. No musical soundtrack. The white in the b&W almost glows in the dark.

I appreciate the art. Those actors had to actually act. Special effects was a bat on a wire. Comedy was interwoven with tragedy to make the latter appear more sinister. I'd rather watch one of those movies than this crap they have out nowadays.

I don't like Rathbone as an actor. He sucked in Son of Frankenstein. I didn't care for his Sherlock Holmes movies. Arthur Wontner was funny. Not to mention Watson was not an over the top bumbling fool in the Wontner movies as Nigel Bruce portrayed. Inspector Lestrade was portrayed as an idiot as well.

Universal was big on interjecting comedy, and IMO, a lot of it was misplaced. They did it across the board, not just in Sherlock Holmes's movies. It was a sign of the times, so I just accept it. Paul Leni was the first to use the interjection of humor in horror, and James Whale followed him.

There's a thread here about what if Trump were assassinated. So what if Paul Leni and Lon Chaney hadn't died in 1929? Bela Lugosi was not wanted as Dracula, and was the the last choice only because they got him at cut rate pay. Lugosi made Dracula, and I doubt Chaney could have done better. Would have been a totally different movie.

Add to that, Lugosi turned down the role as the Frankenstein monster and Karloff made a fortune from it.

It's about the right actor in the right place. IMO, Wontner was way superior to Rathbone, and I like the Brit movies better anyway. It's all a matter of preference.

I'm not a Basil Rathbone fan either, but I was concentrating on just the Sherlock Holmes portrayal, not the movies in general, and I didn't care much for the Nigel Bruce portrayal of Dr. Watson either. In my mind, Sherlock Holmes was sharp and decisive, as was portrayed by Rathbone.

I have no frame of reference. Isn't Sherlock Holmes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? Never read any of his work. Think I've read everything Edgar Rice Burroughs ever put in print though. I find the character as portrayed by Rathbone annoying and like nails on a chalkboard. IMO, he overacted quite a bit and seemed almost shrill. Not to mention he had nose bigger than my grandfather's.

Sherlock Holmes is described as "dispassionate and cold", with "clear, hard eyes", his face a "cold mask". Basil Rathbone lives up to this description quite adequately.

Yes, Rathbone was a somewhat softer version of what Holmes is described as, but to me he presents the better portrayal from others I've seen. I would rather have seen those movies portrayed in the time in which Holmes was originally drafted: Late 1800's.

i actually find this kind of interesting. Better than arguing about which idiot is running for President. Ian Fleming wrote the James Bond books, and I'm totally an early Sean Connery fan. What I see is Americans "Americanize" movies. They pretty much re-wrote Dracula. The English are verbose. Dracula and Frankenstein are exercises in words. The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde could put a baby to sleep.

Wow. I'm a big Sherlock fan, having read all the Arthur Conan Doyle stories and seen many of the modern movies and TV shows, but I had never heard of Wontner.

Here's my opinion, from someone who's read a lot of Sherlock:
- I think Basil Rathbone epitomized Holmes, up until the last 10 years. Nigel Bruce was an entertaining Watson, but turned Watson into a bumbler, which was not supposed to be the case in the stories, but I didn't know that when I saw the Rathbone movies.
- The Jeremy Brett tv show did a great job of staying true to the stories, but his Holmes was kind of flat.
- Even though Benedict Cumberbatch transported Holmes to the current day, he's a great Holmes.
- Young Sherlock Holmes was a fun Spielberg-ian movie, but it only half counts as Holmes. They changed a lot.
- Elementary tv show also moves Holmes to current day. Johnny Lee Miller is an excellent Holmes, but Lucy Lui is a bad Watson.
- The Robert Downey movies were a lot of fun, and stayed fairly true to Holmes, except adding a lot of martial arts (which I don't mind).

I liked that movie. It shows the naivete we went in with. The Battle of the A Shau Valley. Col Hal Moore was brilliant. He did exactly what the enemy thought he wouldn't. He would have lost his ass had he done anything different. Any other thing than attacking would have gotten his trooped and birds picked off one at a time and it would have been a disaster.
