Just thinking aloud -

If I post a short story of a portion of one, what happens if somebody takes my idea/story and uses it? Anyone worried about that?

The poetry site I am a paid member of copyrights every poem I post there. Its in the membership fee contractually. I do however often post poems here first but then shortly afterward post at that site getting the copyright in effect.
However , if concerned a member can always edit to time stamp the post as added insurance. Or apply for copyright..
My friend that just authored a new book has agreed to allow his Rosalia series to be presented in the Creative Writing form.
We are now discussing how it may be presented and when he can get time to do so after he joins this forum!

Many of my poems are even from long ago and time stamped at that old forum.

Good thinking , as one never knows and someday such could have far greater value than we place on it ourselves in the here and now.. -Tyr

Copyscape is great for checking to see if someone robbed you. Their premium software you setup on your site I believe and it monitors live time. At least a head start into who is stealing your content.

Or apply for copyright.

I don't think the act of copyrighting adds much to your protection.

In all countries where the Berne Convention (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berne_Convention_for_the_Protection_of_Literary_an d_Artistic_Works) standards apply, copyright is automatic, and need not be obtained through official registration with any government office. Once an idea has been reduced to tangible form, for example by securing it in a fixed medium (such as a drawing, sheet music, photograph, a videotape, or a computer file), the copyright holder is entitled to enforce his or her exclusive rights.[12] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright#cite_note-Berne_Convention_for_the_Protection_of_Literary_an d_Artistic_Works_Article_5-12)However, while registration isn't needed to exercise copyright, in jurisdictions where the laws provide for registration, it serves as prima facie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prima_facie) evidence of a valid copyright and enables the copyright holder to seek statutory damages (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statutory_damages_for_copyright_infringement) and attorney's fees. (In the USA, registering after an infringement only enables one to receive actual damages and lost profits.)

I believe that's true for any intellectual property. Courts will enforce the IP but nobody is protecting you.

True about catching them. It wouldn't be the first time some movie was a big hit then got sued by someone claiming the idea was stolen from them.

If you post your name start worrying. Privacy is a thing of the past.

Copyright law recognizes the right of an author based on whether the work actually is an original creation, rather than based on whether it is unique; two authors may own copyright on two substantially identical works, if it is determined that the duplication was coincidental, and neither was copied from the other.

Yup, and I think proving that is pretty tough based on my imperfect recollected hearsay of such suits.

Hence the importance of creating a paper trail such as a copyright.

I had a work acquaintance who aspired to get rich with a Hollywood script for an action movie. He pestered everyone to read his script but wanted them to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Most post told him to f**k off, me included. :)

Writing your magnus opus? Sure. Musings on the internet? Not worth the time or money IMO.

Agreed. If I posted a poem or short story, it would be difficult to prove I wrote it 10 years down the road unless I somehow documented per copyright first.

This news story is related to the issue: http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2015/05/15/uber-suit-ken-halpern/27347047/
SAN FRANCISCO—A yogi and filmmaker who has previously sued two other technology firms on Thursday filed suit against Uber, claiming its founders and investors stole the idea and design of the service from him.
Kevin Halpern's suit (http://www.cbdlaw.com./Final_Complaint051315.pdf) was filed in San Francisco Superior Court.
In it, he says Uber CEO <culink class="culinks" culang="en" href="http://curiyo.com/en/topic/Travis Kalanick" title="" style="border-bottom-width: 1px; border-bottom-style: dashed; cursor: help; display: inline !important; float: none !important; padding: 0px !important; margin: 0px !important; border-bottom-color: rgb(250, 102, 0) !important;">Travis Kalanick</culink> stole the idea for a real-time, cellular phone-based car service from his startup, Celluride Wireless, which Halpern founded in 2003.
According to the suit, Halpern discussed his ideas with Kalanick and Uber co-founder<culink class="culinks" culang="en" href="http://curiyo.com/en/topic/Garrett Camp" title="" style="border-bottom-width: 1px; border-bottom-style: dashed; cursor: help; display: inline !important; float: none !important; padding: 0px !important; margin: 0px !important; border-bottom-color: rgb(250, 102, 0) !important;">Garrett Camp</culink> beginning in 2006. Two years later Kalanick and Camp presented the ideas at a venture capital conference and Uber launched several months later.
All of Halpern's agreements with the founders of Uber were "oral agreements" and there were no written non-disclosure agreements or other paperwork, his lawyer, Christopher Dolan said.
Instead Halpern has what Dolan termed "a poor man's copyright" -- a sealed envelop he mailed himself in 2005 which included information about his idea. That envelope is still sealed and now resides in his safe, Dolan said.

The suit says Halpern is entitled to "a significant share of Uber's value." In addition to Kalanick and Camp, venture capitalists <culink class="culinks" culang="en" href="http://curiyo.com/en/topic/Bill Gurley" title="" style="border-bottom-width: 1px; border-bottom-style: dashed; cursor: help; display: inline !important; float: none !important; padding: 0px !important; margin: 0px !important; border-bottom-color: rgb(250, 102, 0) !important;">Bill Gurley</culink> and Bill Trenchard, and investor Scott Belsky are also named in the suit.
The popular ride-hailing company has raised $5.9 billion in investment. By somereports (http://techcrunch.com/2015/05/09/uber-50-billion/) it has entered into a new funding round that would send its valuation to $50 billion.
"These claims are completely baseless. We will vigorously defend against them," Uber spokeswoman Kristin Carvel said in a statement.
Dolan held a news conference on Thursday to announce the suit. Halpern did not attend, but instead posted a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgqMqQ-uTeE) on YouTube about his case, entitled "Grand Theft Uber."
The full news conference (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIMdctEQCu0) is also available on YouTube.
Halpern has a history of filing lawsuits. One was against entrepreneur Anu Shukla (http://venturebeat.com/2009/11/05/lawsuit-alleges-offerpal-co-founder-was-cheated-out-of-ownership/), founder of a startup called OfferPal Media, in 2009 which claimed the two had an agreement to create a product together that she reneged on. The suit was dismissed.
He also sued the city of Santa Cruz, Calif. for unlawful arrest after he was arrested for being under the influence of an illegal stimulant, the San Francisco <i>Chronicle (http://www.sfgate.com/business/article/Lawsuit-claims-Travis-Kalanick-investors-stole-6264425.php)</i> reported. That suit also was dismissed.
According to the <i>San Francisco Business Times, (http://www.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/blog/2015/05/uber-lawsuit-christopher-dolan-travis-kalanick.html)</i> Halpern received a $250,000 settlement from a defendant in another case in which he claimed he was cheated out of his share of a tech company he helped start.

He doesn't seem to have a very good track record. I don't think business plans can be copyrighted but that probably wasn't your point.

THERE IS NO PRIVACY on the Internet. Everyone should know by now. Whatever you say, photo's, documents, opinions, statements, poems, idea's, and any form of personal information that is placed on the Internet.

NEVER EVER GOES AWAY. NEVER!

You may believe you are secure in all that you do here. That's what the experts want you to believe.

But...IT JUST AIN'T SO.

If it was typed onto a screen from a keyboard, downloaded, uploaded, or saved anywhere on a PC or APPLE.
IT IS THERE FOREVER! Period.

BY THE WAY. China has been stealing U.S. Govt. information for years.
Does anyone really think they can't steal from common American citizens like us?

Poems I wrote stolen to be used by others.
Just found these tonight..--Tyr

The poem is about two people that don't get to meet because they are self-conscious.

^^^^ *The thief lies ..-Tyr

Lies and Sad Eyes
Your huge eyes appear bright, blue and so sad
why after all the those rich men you have had
There was that guy that owned a jewelry store
he gave you so much yet you stole so much more

There was the dude that owned nine car lots
he figured you out after I showed your spots
Other cat's parents left him massive wealth
you took all he had and ruined his health

Your big eyes now appear swollen and so very red
Told you I'd endure and torment your silly head
Now you cry and moan for riches you think your due
Life is about family and love yet you haven't a clue

I gave my all and everything hence you never learned to love
Karma bites you while rewarding blessings for me ever since from above
by robert lindley

reflection
I thought the slam poem was really funny and good.
Performance
I think that I could have made the presentation more colorful but I think I did good. Its important to do tasks in drama because that is what drama is. ^^^ Here he makes stupid remarks again. -Tyr

#5. Shining Fruits From A Solid Tree (by Robert J. Lindley)
As I rest on this high mountaintop
blessings come, they never stop
All my family are blessings to me
shining fruits from a solid tree
The clouds parting early each dawn
sunshine on flowers on the lawn
Looking closer I am content to see
smooth waves upon my family sea

^^^^ Here the thief stopped without posting the remaining part of the poem..
Maybe he thought its ok to only steal part of the poem.-Tyr

I found other links a week ago, two of my poems used to advertise. Both stolen property. -Tyr

May be it's easier not to post it before publishing? Then you won't have a headache. http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/standart/blush2.gif
- Do you know the difference between clever and wise?
- A clever man is able to find a way out from any difficult situation. The wise doesn't let it occur. http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/light_skin/yes.gif
