Balu, please tell me more about this. I think it's exactly what America needs. Imagine a society where personal responsibility is most important.

In the Soviet Union, which declared itself a workers' state, every adult able-bodied person was expected to work until official retirement. Thus unemployment was officially and theoretically eliminated. Those who refused to work, study or serve in another way risked being criminally charged with social parasitism (Russian: тунея́дство).

Ignoring the idea that it was a Soviet Union law, does anyone have any thoughts about this?

Yes. Perianne. The truth they always skirt around, and never want to admit about their SO-CALLED Zero Unemployment idea's is. The Government TELLS the people WHERE they will work, how much they will earn, and HOW Long they must work every day. There's much more to it. But the information is readily available when speaking about SOCIALIST forms of Government.
There's a book by Ayne Rand called "ATLAS SHRUGGED", which presents a futuristic picture of how America would look under the Soviet, Socialist form of Government.

By the way. Congressman BERNIE SANDERS (I) is running for President as a Democrat because he is unable to run as his Admitted American Socialist Party agenda.
Great to see BERNIE SANDERS in the running against Hillary. His Initials are very Telling "B.S."

aboutime,

I have read Atlas Shrugged. Great book indeed. But my thread was more about requiring every able-bodied person to support themselves. I am aware of the USSR's history of totally controlling its people. But that aside, how do you feel about making welfare recipients take personal responsibility for their own family?

I have always felt that way. Problem is. Those who refuse to take personal responsibility for their own Family, and Actions...are merely following the False Leadership in Washington, D.C.

This has been going on for many decades. Cheating, Stealing, and Lack of Personal Responsibility has been sanctioned by Government...Federal, State, County, and local since the FIRST WELFARE CHECK was written by the Democrats in Washington, since before we were born.

The Government DOES NOT WANT Americans to be personally responsible because that takes away the NEEDS for Big Government, handouts, freebies, and reasons to always print more money WE DON'T HAVE.

This account gets to the nub of the matter, for me.

It isn't about the 'moral issue of social parasitism' ... because all it's really about is a Government dictating to a potential workforce that they MUST be an ACTUAL workforce, without exceptions (except for disabilities and the like, something physically impeding the ability to work).

It's anti-Capitalist in a sense, because Capitalistic societies stratify their populations as a matter of natural social evolution. It's saying that if you've worked hard, if you have enough money to live out the rest of your life without ever needing to work again ... TOUGH, because we, the Government, aren't going to allow you the fullest chance of any life of leisure you can actually afford.

A word that comes to mind to help describe what's being insisted upon, is .. SLAVERY. The insistence that your 'master' has that you MUST work for him .. that you've absolutely no choice in the matter.

I completely reject this notion of 'social parasitism', unless of course we're talking about benefit scroungers, who are in a league of their own. How can a citizen with enough money to pay his way in life, be a 'parasite', when that person's expenditures help feed into the economy, and keep jobs and industries going, as all commerce does ??

No. This is a 'class war' issue at its heart .. and buying into the notion that if you CAN work, you MUST work, is a defence of an enslaving mindset which has a contempt for the full freedom to enjoy wealth.

It's an enterprise-killing idea. If you strive to be wealthy, by what right does some power-freak 'authority' come along and insist you don't have a right to enjoy what you've worked for ?

I was going even simpler, "they pretend to pay, we pretend to work."

May be you are right. You know the situation better in your country.

There is a comprehensive description in an article you gave a link to.

In the Soviet Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union), which declared itself a workers' state, every adult able-bodied person was expected to work until official retirement. Thus unemployment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unemployment) was officially and theoretically eliminated. Those who refused to work (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refusal_of_work), study or serve in another way risked being criminally charged with social parasitism (Russian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_language): тунея́дство).[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parasitism_%28social_offense%29#cite_note-4)
In 1961, 130,000 people were identified as leading the "anti-social, parasitic way of life" in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Soviet_Federative_Socialist_Republic).[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parasitism_%28social_offense%29#cite_note-5) Charges of parasitism were frequently applied to dissidents (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissidents) and refuseniks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refusenik_%28Soviet_Union%29), many of whom were intellectuals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual). Since their writings were considered against the regime, the state prevented them from obtaining employment. To avoid trials for parasitism, many of them took unskilled (but not especially time-consuming) jobs (street sweepers, firekeepers, etc.), which allowed them to continue their other pursuits.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)]

Article 209 of the RSFSR Criminal Code establishes liability for the three different forms of so called parasitic existence, forming a separate crime - vagrancy, begging, maintenance of a parasitic way of life. Under the concept of a parasitic way of life, leading to the long-term fall within those cases when a person evades community service and living on unearned income of more than four consecutive months or a total for the year, and in this regard he made an official warning about the inadmissibility of such lifestyle.

Hope my explanations are useful.
