More than 156,000 troops landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch in an operation often considered the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe.
73,000 Americans participated in the D-Day Invasion and nearly 2,500 were killed, according to US National D-Day Memorial Foundation.
The invasion marked the beginning of an 80-day campaign to liberate Normandy, which involved 3 million troops and cost the lives of 250,000.

it was taken in tow to the Caribbean. in England the planners of D-day were sweating bullets it would be seen by another Uboat and the German would change the codes on their Enigma machines and force a cancellation of the invasion. and maybe a whole new coding system that would take months to break. U-505 is still on display in Chicago
