Gunmen have killed at least 27 people in an attack on two tourist hotels in a Tunisian town popular with British holidaymakers.

Tourists fled from the beach in Sousse to take refuge in hotel rooms after guns were fired on the beach.

One man said his son saw someone get shot as he raced back to the hotel from the sea.

Photographs seen by Sky News show one man in his 60s or 70s lying in a pool of blood in his swimming shorts.

The country's interior ministry says one gunman has been killed, while another is still on the loose. At least 27 people have been killed.

Tourists are now gathered in hotel reception areas and hiding in rooms as the situation develops.

~ "And we keep letting them in....Europe is committing suicideby allowing or if not allowing...not stopping the enemy [yes the enemy]into our home. The army has to be used on our borders, the navy needs to be mobilised to stop the ships and turn them round, and if they don't blow them out the water.this isn't a minor problem,we are in more danger now than we have been since the Battle of Britain, and should be seen that way.For goodnees sake WAKE UP AND SMELL NTHE COFFEE." ~

The group put the number of dead and injured in the dozens.

Cell phone video posted to social media and apparently shot at the mosque showed worshippers walking and stumbling through a dust- and rubble-filled interior, many with their white robes splattered in what appeared to be blood.

Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah toured the damaged mosque ahead of emergency Cabinet and parliamentary meetings, the Kuwait News Agency reported.

The country's Justice and Islamic Affairs minister, Yaqoub Al-Sanea, called the attack "a terrorist and criminal act that threatens our security and targets our national unity," the news agency said.

It comes amid deadly terror attacks in Tunisia and France.

According to authorities, at least 27 people died (http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/26/africa/tunisia-terror-attack/index.html) in an attack on a seaside hotel in Tunisia, whilein France (http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/26/europe/france-attack/index.html) an attacker crashed a car into a building housing an American-owned company and left a body with a severed head and a message.
