Shock aviation group air force in Crimea will be enhanced long-range bombers Tu-22M3, whose affected area extends far beyond the borders of the Black sea. A similar solution is considered to be one of the responses to the deployment of the U.S. missile base in Romania.

American management announced the construction of a missile base in Romania, whose radius of action is to hit the Black sea. In response to this, Russia is taking steps to completely negate all the attempts of the United States to secure superiority in the region. Thus, it became known that the shock aviation Crimea will strengthen the squadron of long-range bombers Tu-S.

"In this step is recognized as sufficient to place on the airfield in Crimea, a squadron of Tu-22M3. Her combat abilities will greatly enhance air cover in the Black sea and the black sea region", - quotes "Interfax" the representative of the Ministry of defence of the Russian Federation.

He added that, even, "one of the measures taken in response to placement on the territory of Romania us antimissile base". "The range Tu-22M3 and his missiles extends far beyond the borders of the Black sea", - said the defense Ministry.

In the future Russia will only increase military presence in the region, which allows it to guarantee the security of its own people. "It is likely that in the following grouping of Tu-22M3 in the Crimea will be increased to a regiment," he stated adept defense Department.

Far the Tupolev-Tu-22M3 is designed to defeat ground, sea, moving and stationary targets of ultrasonic guided missiles and bombs with simple or nuclear charge. Limit the speed of flight of a combat vehicle is 2 thousand km per hour, and the weapons complex includes 10 managed cruise missile of class "air-surface", "air-ship" and "air radar", also bombs and abiamiri.

Earlier, an anonymous source in the Russian defense Ministry told that in case of military aggression of the United States on the Russian Federation to base interceptor missiles large-scale American missile defense system in Romania will be the first target for local impact funds. Now their list has added long-range bombers Tu-22, capable of other things to bear nuclear warheads.

I would like to see some election reform, specifically a ranking of candidates instead of simply voting for one. OTOH, having a choice between two parties is still twice as good as only having a choice for one.

...you don't really think you had a choice in Putin's election, do you?

lol... we stopped fearing the over hyped TU-22 "Backfire" back in the late 1970's.

As a provision of SALT II the TU-22 and it's variants are not equipped with an Aerial refueling capability.

It's a pony with very short legs.....

Out of almost 500 built there are only 150 that are flight capable in all of Russia.

with a range of just 1500 miles at a normal combat load it has to be deployed to advance bases close to it's targets.

with no stealth capability it is an easy target... we laugh at the Backfire. Our B-1B outclasses it in every area of performance except speed.

Why are you starting repetitive threads? Russia has no answer to us. Didn't that entire loss of the Cold War sink in? Or Russian pilots flying MIGs in Vietnam getting their asses shot out of the sky at 20 to one?

You just go on and take on some of our jet jockeys. It was never the technology that put your asses in the drink. It was the training. We actually had inferior jets from an air to air combat sense in Vietnam and STILL canned yours. Tactics, training and strategy will win every time.

The P-40 Warhawk was inferior to the Japanese Zero in every way. Yet, the Flying Tigers kicked their asses.

My point is, stop sticking machinery up here thinking you're impressing anyone.

That's called a weave, right?

I don't remember all the details but IIRC, a Navy pilot in Vietnam knocked off two MIGs and got into a weave with the last one and was out of ammo and outflew the MIG in a weave until the MIG hit the deck and his afterburners and hauled ass.

Correct Gunny, it's called the THACH WEAVE. Developed by Lt. Commander John "Jimmy" Thach.

First utilized at the Battle of Midway in June of 1942, it allowed the tough but inferior F4F Grumman Wildcat to take on and defeat the superior Japanese A6-M Zero.

by employing 4 planes abreast and weaving back and forth it allows 2 planes of the section to constantly be able to engage enemies attacking the other 2 section members. By staying with your wing-man and weaving the Zero was seemingly always in position for a deflection shot.

It was the Training that made the difference. The only advantage the Wildcat had over the Zero was in Armor Protection. It was far slower and far less agile in an ACM Situation. The Wildcat was Heavier and in a Dive could outpace the Zero and could turn out of it better. The Zero with its cloth covered wings ran the risk of exceeding her performance envelope and tearing off it's own wings at high dive speeds.

Later in 1942 the F4F was replaced by the faster and tougher F6F Hellcat. The Hellcat ended Japanese fighter supremacy until the end of the war along with the Marine Corps F4u Corsair and the Army P-38 Lightning. all of which were faster, stronger and had greater agility and range than the Zero.

I used to read up on all that stuff. I grew up in the Air Force. I thnk Chenault's tactics were the same (not the Thach Weave"), but "don't dogfight with a Zero". IIRC, his tactic was simpler: get above the enemy, swoop down on them and once through, keep going. The P-40s were more heavily armed and armored so the lighter Zero's couldn't dive with them if they were at full momentum.

I personally think the Navy stuck the Corsairs on the Marines because they were too fast for them. :)

Voted4Reagan is right. Until the introduction of the F6F Bearcat, we had nothing that could dogfight with a Zero.

We won the Battle of Midway with Dauntless divebombers and Vindicator torpedo bombers. You want to talk luck? We were hopelessly outclassed. I could outrun a Vindicator in my day.

Only we had the Yorktown which they though they had sunk hiding to the NE .. and going off memory here .... the Japanese loaded their planes with bombs to strike at the B-17's on Midway thinking they had killed our sea force and we caught them on deck re-arming and refueling. Fighter cover was F4F Wildcats under LtCmdr Tach.

That is VERY true. Good combat Marines usually suck when they're in the rear. Inspections, paperwork ... all that crap. The ones that are good at THAT usually couldn't hump a hundred pounds more than a couple of mile before falling out.

Boyington's problems with alcohol are legendary. After he spent two years suffering as a Japanese POW a reporter asked him if he hated the Japanese for their treatment of him. His response was "Nah, they're the only ones who could ever dry me out".

For extraordinary heroism above and beyond the call of duty as Commanding Officer of Marine Fighting Squadron TWO FOURTEEN in action against enemy Japanese forces in Central Solomons Area from September 12, 1943 to January 3, 1944. Consistently outnumbered throughout successive hazardous flights over heavily defended hostile territory, Major Boyington struck at the enemy with daring and courageous persistence, leading his squadron into combat with devastating results to Japanese shipping, shore installations and aerial forces. Resolute in his efforts to inflict crippling damage on the enemy, Major BOYINGTON led a formation of twenty-four fighters over Kahili on October 17, and, persistently circling the airdrome where sixty hostile aircraft were grounded, boldly challenged the Japanese to send up planes. Under his brilliant command, our fighters shot down twenty enemy craft in the ensuing action without the loss of a single ship. A superb airman and determined fighter against overwhelming odds, Major BOYINGTON personally destroyed 26 of the many Japanese planes shot down by his squadron and by his forceful leadership developed the combat readiness in his command which was a distinctive factor in the Allied aerial achievements in this vitally strategic area.

We had another conversation about this a while back, but...

I met Pappy Boyington at a Denver airshow back in like 1980 or 81 as a boy. My Dad bought his autobiography and had it autographed there, it was a big deal for me because I loved that show and Pappy was one of my heroes.

The book was great and I loved it, but unfortunately it disappeared somewhere along the line and I'd give almost anything to get it back.

One of the funniest stories in his book was the way they'd lie to the Japs over the radio to get them to come up and fight.

It began with : "Major Boyington, what is your position?" The Marines all knew it was an English-speaking Japanese on the other end, because an American wouldn't talk like that - this guy's English was perfect when the Americans all talked slang.

Boyington would answer that they were at 8,000 feet over a certain landmark, when in reality they were circling much higher, waiting. Sure enough, a bunch of Jap fighters would appear at 10,000 feet over that landmark, looking below for the Americans... and Pappy and his squadron would bounce them from 15,000 feet and decimate them. This went on for a long time, always beginning with the Jap that spoke perfect English asking for their position. Finally they wised up, and the shit-talking would commence over the radio since the jig was up, and the Japs were getting tired of losing planes to the game.

After the Japanese were no longer interested in Fighter-to-Fighter combat, Pappy began flying his planes in a bomber formation, talking back and forth on the radio like the bomber pilots would, and being sure to let anyone listening know they were at a certain elevation. Yep, the Jap fighters appeared 2,000 feet above the reported elevation, but again, Pappy and his guys were several thousand feet above it, waiting to drop the hammer. That only worked a few times, but got them quite a few kills.

I always wondered how the perfect English speaking Jap on the radio fared with all that. Every time he told his bosses the Americans were at one location and Fighters were dispatched to intercept, they got their asses handed to them. There had to be some suspicion that his loyalties weren't where they should have been.
