I wouldn't run over baby ducks... that's about as cruel as clubbing kittens.

Gratuitous loss of life or blatant killing? Awful. I would have done whatever it takes to help the critters. :)

I have an affinity for baby ducks. I really don't know why, but they're possibly my favorite animal.

A few years ago I received 3 baby Mallards for Father's Day. I built a little pool for them and made a little area for them in the garage at night so they'd be comfortable and safe. I would come home from work, and they'd recognize my truck's sound and come hauling ass around the corner of the house from the back yard to greet me with their high-pitched "peep! peep!" calls, which I believe translates to "mama! mama!".

They'd run up to about 5' away from me and then stop, giving me the eye and peeping... they wouldn't approach all the way because they instinctively knew that Mama wasn't supposed to be 6' tall. So I'd squat, and they'd all bolt underneath me and be happy as clams.

I was heartbroken when, a few months later, some neighbor's shithead dog killed one and mauled another. The last one I let go down at Wasilla Lake where there was a local population of Mallards that hung out in a certain spot next to the highway and the water never froze during the winter. I brought him and his new buddies food every couple of days, and for about a month he'd still come running to me when he heard my truck, and then dart under me when I hunkered down and visit for a bit with me.

After a few months, he flew away to wherever Mallards head to. I hope the little fella is happy wherever he is.
