LITTLE ROCK, Wash. -- An 8-year-old boy was killed at his grandfather’s home when a small antique cannon was fired and exploded on the Fourth of July, reported KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

The accident happened at a family gathering of about 20 people in Little Rock, south of Olympia.

A captain with the Little Rock Fire District said the boy was hit in the chest with shrapnel at about 8 p.m.

Police said the victim was 100 feet away.

Devan Vyborny was taken to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia where he died about 90 minutes later.

Chief Criminal Deputy Jim Chamberlain said investigators were trying to determine when, where and how the cannon was manufactured. He said it was about a foot and a half long with a barrel 3 1/2 inches in diameter.

"It was discharged intentionally as a part of the celebration," Chamberlain said. "Why someone else wasn't injured, I don't know."
