We finally went to the new-ish Whole Foods in the next town. I expected a wide range of organic high-priced foods, and shoppers who take themselves way too seriously. They did not disappoint.

While I'm looking at the endless shelves of organic vegetables, without a single recognizable brand (Bird's Eye? Hanover? Buehler?), I overheard the woman behind me say to the stock boy:

"Can you tell me where the gluten-free flowers are?"


When I stopped laughing, I thought: WTH?! Aren't all flowers gluten-free? Are we talking those fancy edible flowers? Or is this a case of someone who just will not have even the flowers in her vase with the offending gluten?

I am shocked that there might be a market for more than one gluten free flour. Incidentally the gastroenterologists I work with scoff at the patients that insist they are gluten intolerant without any pathological evidence from small intestine biopsies. We've had one woman come in for five upper GI exams insisting she must have celiac disease and, indeed, listing it as a diagnosis when all of her exams have been completely normal. Her doctor says she has been to about six other specialists but refuses to acknowledge that the stress of her two children, caring for an elderly mother and holding down a job in ad marketing and eating at unusual hours might be contributing to her gastrointestinal issues.

Nice to have your perspective on the gluten issue. It does seem like the disorder of the month.

As for the other point, If I wanted flour, even if there were 20 gluten-free flours, I wouldn't make it plural. I'd say "Where is the flour?", not "Where are the flours".

I went to a huge Whole Foods once when I was in Austin. Didn't pick up on the pretentious aspect, but did notice it was overpriced out the wazoo. So we got some overpriced fruit and I didn't notice any difference to the fruit we got at this store called HEB.

I went to a huge Whole Foods once when I was in Austin. Didn't pick up on the pretentious aspect, but did notice it was overpriced out the wazoo. So we got some overpriced fruit and I didn't notice any difference to the fruit we got at this store called HEB.


My husband thought it was expensive, too.

I will say, the seafood display was very enticing. And that is an area where it really counts.

The only reason I step foot in Whole Foods is to find products with alternative ingredients that my diabetic husband likes, which are rarely carried in our other local stores. Pastries made with quinoa flours and bean flours are actually tasty if done right, and I seem to find them there.

The Whole Foods in Sedona sucks, it doesn't seem clean to me.

Back in Wheaton I'd go there for no sodium items that weren't available in regular stores, though that was changing. They also had a very good salad bar, not too expensive for just 1. It was clean though!

Guess you must have to live in the south ( or cook in Kat's case ) but I knew what the AP deal was, the Ol lady has sent me to the store to pick up some AP flour to make biscuits with, nothing better than sausage gravy and biscuits, OK Abbey I am sure that is a no no, but I guess you could have the gravy and biscuits minus the sausage, in fact it seems many of the restaurants in town go with that rule, seems I can never find the sausage when I order it. :laugh:

Tell me about it, we ate the other night at a Huddle House, got that big breakfast deal, comes with like one of everything, but my buddy ordered extra sausage, I asked him how the hell hungry he was and he said you will see, when the biscuit came out it had gravy on it but no meat, he nicely broke up his extra sausage and added it to the plate and said now I have a biscuit and gravy. :laugh:

I usually won't order biscuits and gravy out anymore because you can't be sure that they didn't get it from a jar or some mix. I did in Blowing Rock last week though being sure to ask how it was made. Now that you mention it I don't recall how much actual sausage was in it. Best to make it at home. :cool:

Yesterday my daughter and I went to a breakfast place she had been telling me about. She advised me to order the biscuits and chorizo gravy. Oh my gosh, I about threw up eating that stuff. It was awful. But I ate it anyway to keep from her feeling bad.

You would really like my buddy :laugh: we call him Sasquatch, he is 6'2 or 3 about 250lbs +\-, and looks like he has a shirt on even when he doesn't, he has got to be the hairiest human being I have ever seen. :laugh: Nicest guy you would want to meet, but he is intimidating looking sure enough. :laugh:

I hate when that happens, hell the food is horrible but ya really don't want to hurt someones feelings, hell I usually just tell them :laugh: I have heard that Chorizo stuff is suppose to be good, the Mexicans all eat it and heck I like Mexican food, so who knows.

Chorizo I think is mostly Portuguese I think. I would shy away from making gravy from it though.

Chorizo is an acquired taste. My sister in law is half Mexican and she makes it all the time. I didn't like it at first but now I love it.

I probably won't ever order it again. And I definitely won't make it at home....unless my daughter wants me to.

I don't know if they are just a southern thing, but I know we have them here, and we sure like them. Not frozen, though.

I never heard of biscuits and gravy until I was in the Army. Now I have to have it a lot! Never understood grits though.

Isn't it odd how some parts of the country are so different from others? Biscuits and gravy are ubiquitous in the south.

Yeah, I just shop Winco. I haven't got the funds for Whole Foods, and even if I did, I'd just hit up a farmer's market for the organic stuff. WAY cheaper.

Turnip Greens stink, although better than Mustard Greens still not as good as Collards ( even though they kind of all look a like, to me anyway ) and yes they are a Southern thing, or a Soul food thing up north. I never had any of them until I moved south.

Yea you could move south anytime, they are all on the menu usually.
