Politics: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her allies spent the weekend in Iraq for a photo-op with troops. The purpose: to place a veneer of patriotism on Congress' upcoming efforts to lose this war.
Tagging along with Pelosi and other top Democratic members of Congress on her surprise "fact-finding mission" was Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, the appropriations committee member in charge of defense spending, whom fellow House Democrats rebuffed when Pelosi tried to make him her deputy leader. With Pelosi's backing, Murtha called for a six-month withdrawal in 2005.
There should be no illusions about the purpose of this expedition. Pelosi and Murtha and their chums were not in Baghdad in search of facts. If they were, they might have discovered, as the incorruptible Democratic Sen. Joseph Lieberman did on a 10-day visit to the Mideast last month, that generals and colonels are "asking for more troops" and telling anyone who'll listen that "we believe in why we are fighting here and we want to finish this fight" because "we know we can win it."
These top House Democrats went to Iraq in search of political cover, to better pretend upon their return that they have America's national security interests at heart. It's no surprise that Pelosi refused to report the content of her discussions with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Good news and prospects for victory do not fit in with her game plan.
Pelosi may claim she was there "to convey to our troops the appreciation of the American people for what they're doing, to applaud their patriotism, the sacrifice they're willing to make and the courage they're demonstrating."
But while she was dropping in for the weekend on the central battlefront of the global war on terror, her top House lieutenant was unveiling the Democrats' scheme to wreck our plans to win in Iraq.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland, speaking at the Brookings Institution in Washington on Friday, revealed what Democrats will do after current congressional hearings on the war are completed.
Hoyer said, "We will then explore appropriate ways to affect the policy and strategy being pursued in Iraq."
That is, how to undercut President Bush. Specifically, Democrats plan to replace with a new one the measure passed in 2002 supporting the president's invasion — "a revised authorization for the use of military force in Iraq that more accurately reflects the mission of our troops on the ground." A recipe for retreat.
Other "possible vehicles" allowing Congress to meddle with the president's new strategy for victory include the use of spending bills for military and diplomatic activities in Iraq, Hoyer said.
How painful it must have been for those who wear the uniform of the U.S. and risk life and limb daily for the cause of freedom to force a smile for the cameras as they stood beside Pelosi and Murtha — members of a party committed to defeat.
