DWB (Driving While Black)

To the Editor:

I would like to share a family story. Ours is a multiracial family, and one of our black members was driving through New Jersey with friends from Pennsylvania to one of our New York family events. Stopped on I-95, they were told to get out of the car, open the trunk and stand aside. The state trooper proceeded to toss things around, dump suitcase contents and, finally, open a small box in the trunk where he found a powder.

With an “aha!” look in his eye, he put his finger in and tasted it. He then asked what did they think they were getting away with.

“My mother’s ashes,” replied our relative.

The trooper gagged.
