I think it is high time to think about the gifts for own beloveds.
I am curios what you, Americans, intend to present to your parents (if you are lucky to have them alive yet), grand children, children, wives and your close friends? http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/standart/blush2.gif

For New Years Day or for Christmas?

The is a certain difference between Russia and the West.
Our New Year celebration has the same scale as Christmas in your country, though our Christmas (January the 7th, in accordance with our Church calender) is not a working day too. In our country we have so-called New Year Holidays January 1-11th.
As you know Christmas are before the New Year, so, traditionally, we have an extra New Year (called in our country as "An Old New Year"), an unofficial holidays, which we celebrate January 13-14th.
Another peculiar thing is than very many people also celebrate the Catholic Christmas December 24-25th and start their New Year Holidays from this day. http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/standart/smile3.gif

Nice shoes again. But they don't have my size. Not that I would buy them, but a girl can at least think about it.

I'm getting my wife a really nice monitor. And yes, she said she wanted one. All four of us in our family have high-end video cards already.

In my family, Christmas is about family. Every person gets one gift. It is not the financial carnage that one would expect from an American Christmas.

I have a calendar in mind that I should get for Jim. It will remind him of boobies all through 2016!

I rarely ever Christmas earlier than 2 weeks before the date. Then I around in and wander thru stores and wait for each gift inspiration to find me as I look at whats offered that year my friend.
My wife Riza, does not like guns, so she never buys me a gun(my favorite present), instead its jewelery and clothes she gifts me each year.. My two "ex-wives" , bought me guns just about every year. --Tyr

Even by British standards (.. which is really saying something !!) .. these holidays seem a tad excessive. Though, they are not dissimilar to those we have in the UK, to an extent, anyway.

Christmas Eve, 24th December ... businesses wind down, shops close early (some don't even bother to open). Christmas day, a holiday. December 26th, otherwise known as 'Boxing Day', also a holiday. If weekdays follow, we return to work on 27th December until New Years Eve, where businesses wind down early .. again. New Years Day .. a holiday. Back to work .. 2nd January (weekend permitting).

It's true that some businesses, especially in recent years, have taken to closing down from Christmas Eve to 2nd January. Not all, though, by any means.

We certainly have no equivalent of your 'New Year Holidays January 1-11th'.

I don't have anything to report on the 'what would you buy relatives' question, as I'm just about the last survivor from both my mother's and father's families. But that, to me, is ideal. I've always valued quiet Christmases, free of family 'angst' ....
