History[edit (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Toys_for_Tots&action=edit&section=1)]Toys for Tots began as a Los Angeles (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles) charitable effort (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charitable_organization) in 1947. Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR, was inspired by his wife Diane when she tried to donate a homemade Raggedy Ann (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raggedy_Ann)doll to a needy child but could find any organization to do so. At her suggestion, he gathered a group of local Marine reservists, including Lieutenant Colonel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lieutenant_Colonel) John Hampton (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hampton_(philanthropist)),[3] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toys_for_Tots#cite_note-contracosta-3) who coordinated and collected some 5,000 toys for local children that year from collection bins placed outside of Warner Bros. movie theaters (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Movie_theaters).[3] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toys_for_Tots#cite_note-contracosta-3) Their efforts were so successful that, in 1948, Toys for Tots was launched as a national campaign. Hendricks used his position as director of Public Relations for Warner Brothers Studio (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warner_Bros.) to enlist celebrity support, as well as have Walt Disney Studios (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Walt_Disney_Company) design the red toy train (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toy_train) logo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logo).[2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toys_for_Tots#cite_note-history-2)

Until 1979, Marine reservists (frequently in their dress blue uniforms (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniforms_of_the_United_States_Marine_Corps#Blue_Dr ess)) and volunteers would collect and refurbish used toys. In 1980, only new toys were accepted, as reservists were no longer able to dedicate drill hours to refurbish toys, as well as legal concerns and the mixed message of giving hand-me-downs (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Used_good) as a message of hope.[2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toys_for_Tots#cite_note-history-2)

In 1991, the Secretary of Defense (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Secretary_of_Defense) authorized the creation and affiliation with the non-profit (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-profit_organization)charity foundation. In 1995, the Secretary of Defense approved Toys for Tots as an official mission of the Marine Corps Reserve.[4] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toys_for_Tots#cite_note-chronology-4)

Noting in 1996 that many communities did not have a Marine reservist presence, the commander of the Marine Forces Reserve authorized Marine Corps League (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_Corps_League) detachments and other local organizations to fill the gaps in toy collection and distribution.[4] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toys_for_Tots#cite_note-chronology-4)

In 2009, the program received support from First Lady Michelle Obama (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelle_Obama), who placed the first collection box at the White House (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_House).[5] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toys_for_Tots#cite_note-MCT2009-5) In December 2011, she took part in a Toys for Tots activity at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joint_Base_Anacostia-Bolling).[6] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toys_for_Tots#cite_note-6)[7] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toys_for_Tots#cite_note-7)

As of 2013, the Toys for Tots Program and Foundation have collected and distributed more than 469 million toys.[8] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toys_for_Tots#cite_note-origin-8)
Mission[edit (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Toys_for_Tots&action=edit&section=2)]The mission of the program "is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted."

The stated goal is to "deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens."

And in the late 90s a Marine Reserve SSgt got busted ripping off Toys for Tots and he was CRUCIFIED. They should have just let the rest of us have him for some "PT". Dirtbag SOB. I perosnally don't like Christmas, but there are a lot of people that do that can't afford it. Stealing from them is as low as it gets. No REAL Marine would do that, and how this cheesd*ck squeezed through the crack beats me.

Again, thank you for enabling the Marine Corps to meet the significant challenge of providing Christmas joy and hope to millions of our nation's neediest children. Your kindness and compassion will make a difference in their lives.
