Beautiful!

I expected to see more trees lining the streets... Germans like to march in the shade, you know. :happy0203:

This was France. They like to surrender in bright sunlight ;)

Looks cool, but what's the story behind all of the bears hanging from the buildings?

Did France take that city from Germany at some point?

Isn't this STRASBOURG, France ? Certainly looks like it ...

I did a day trip to it once, many years ago (courtesy of a German family who ferried us there from Bingen-am-Rhein). Certainly looks as I remember it.

Not that it'd be exactly a major port of call (!) ... but they have a rather large Marks & Spencer store there ... a premier British chainstore. If you wanted to go shopping during your visit, it would've been a useful store to go to. By British standards, they always excel in quality clothing goods ...

Yes, that's why i used the city and country as the thread title ;)

I will look for that shop next time! Thanks!

If not now, I think they will when they are a bit older.

Thought as much, of course. But I'm taking it that you had that place recommended to you by a German speaker ? You used the German name for it, whereas both the British and the French would've spelled it as Strasbourg ... it's a bit like me freely posting that I may be visiting Frankreich sometime, instead of calling it France ... or discussing (with Balu ?) 'rußischen Militäreinsatz in Syrien' ....

Hope you enjoy Marks & Spencer (or M&S, or 'Marks & Sparks') if/when you next visit. It sells a variety of goods. Clothing principally, though it'll also have its bedding, bathroom, and food sections. The ranges should be the same as you'd see in most UK stores, so it'll be like a 'pocket UK' as you wander around it.

According to this, they renovated the store (it's an old link, though ..), and incorporated a coffee bar / tea room. [If it compares to the larger M&S stores over here, it should also have its mini-restaurant]

Ah! Makes sense. Since i live here I went with the German spelling. :)

Thinking about a Ryan Air to the UK in the coming months. Any stops close a pub near you? :)

There's a pub (combined pub / hotel) around 10 minutes' walk away from the rail station which serves my area. I'll PM you in the next couple of days ....

I don't wanna seem like a creeper...:( I don't take my Big, Thick, White Lenses out in public much. :(

On that note I'm completely torn. I want 'someone special' but the thought of adding that kinda stress (you know, the initial what ifs and all that, then the arguing, the making-up, time with my kids, etc) sorta turns me off. I am starting to really REALLY like being "Dad" only. Much easier to be "dad" than "darin" at this point.

Course, if the right (read: short, willing, cute) woman shows up at my door...all bets are off :)

New place, new faces, no baggage... raising the kids and having fun in a different country. Relationships and women have a way of getting in the way. :) :)

My apologies in advance to Alaina, Mary & all of the ladies of this board. But y'all know I'm right! :2up:

it's really as simple as this: Right now I can't afford more of myself leaving. Keeping the family together and learning a new job AND having partial-stake in a woman's heart? overwhelming.

I agree 3,000%. But like you said, I think if it just 'happened', and made you happy while there, then it wouldn't be quite overwhelming. Besides, what would happen if you met someone that you dug a bit - then someone is making some serious changes in their life at the end of a year!!

Been a while, but I recall the story of someone living in the Alsace region born in a certain time period would have changed from French to German several times. I snapped this while in Colmar, postwar sign to make fun of the Germans. Here you have a learned French monk trying to educate the pig (what they called the Germans back then). Then the next frame, hams all cooked and ready for feasting.

In my (admittedly) limited experience, German girls are pretty willing.
