I LOVE battleships. Been on 5 of them. The Texas, North Carolina, Missouri, Arizona (a memorial) and the Iowa. The Texas is in Galveston. The North Carolina is right off the highway on the way to Cap Lejeune. Mighty Mo and the Arizona are in Honolulu, and I was on the Iowa in Norfolk. Don't know where it currently resides.

Those things are an awesome weapons platform.
I pulled up alongside of Missouri when she was offloading
ammo.

Her gun barrels were longer than the boat I was running.

They should be reactivated for this ISIS problem.

My father was on the USS Massachusetts during WWII; manned one of the 16 inch guns as a trainer (moved the turret around). I even had the opportunity to tour the ship with him a few times before he passed away. The ship is open and on display in Fall River, Mass.

Wasn't that sunk by the Bismark? Or was it the one that sunk the Bismark? My memory's a tad hazy. I know a torpedo from a plane took out the Bismark's rudder. It was left swimming in a box.

Ark Royal was in on the hunt for the Bismarck but was sunk later by a German U-boat.

ONE of them was, yes. But you can't keep a good name down. We've had FIVE ships sail under that name ....

For those who want to learn what the Greatest Navy in the World actually has:

I PRESENT.......

List of current ships of the United States Navy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

USS George Washington (CVN-73) Carrier Strike Group formation sails in the Atlantic Ocean

USS Constitution under sail for the first time in 116 years on 21 July 1997.
The United States Navy has approximately 430 ships in both active service and the reserve fleet, with approximately 70 more in either the planning stages or under construction, according to the Naval Vessel Register and published reports. This list includes ships that are owned and leased by the U.S. Navy; ships that are formally commissioned, by way of ceremony, and non-commissioned. Ships denoted with the prefix "USS" are commissioned ships. Prior to commissioning, ships are designated with the prefix "PCU", for "Pre-Commissioning Unit". US Navy support ships are often non-commissioned ships organized and operated by Military Sealift Command. Among these support ships, those denoted "USNS" are owned by the US Navy; those denoted by "MV" or "SS" are chartered.
Current ships include commissioned warships that are in active service, as well as ships that are part of Military Sealift Command, the support component and the Ready Reserve Force, that while non-commissioned, are still part of the effective force of the U.S. Navy. Future ships listed are those that are in the planning stages, or are currently under construction, from having its keel laid to fitting out and final sea trials.
There exist a number of former US Navy ships which are museum ships (not listed here), some of which may be US government-owned. One of these, the USS Constitution, a three-masted tall ship, is one of the original six frigates of the United States Navy. It is the oldest naval vessel afloat, and still retains its commission (and hence is listed here), as a special commemoration for that ship alone.

Sorry. Diaper duty.

I hate anything that starts with an LHA through LHD-4. I hate non-skid and I hate being trapped in prison. I definitely hate Harriers. Those damned things will rattle your teeth out landing. And I really hate when some dumbass Chief wants to call a FOD detail. My last float I would just walk off. You got 2k privates and 2k seamen. Use them.

Kind of old school, but that's okay. The USS Boxer is an LHD-4. The Bon Homme Richard is LHD-5. IIRC, the Pelelieu is LHA-3. And you couldn't get me on an LPD today if you paid Christ.

Don't bother me with all the names Jarheads come up with. Most of the Marines had their beginnings with SAILOR fathers. So, if you think about it. There are many Squids still living who planted the seeds of Marines.

Don't feel too lonely in that boat. Mine thinks he's the reincarnation of Douglas MacArthur. Thinks he should get respect by decree. I think he was sober last in about the 90s. H actually is a retired Major that likes to tell war stories. I wasn't aware they had a war in Oklahoma or the San Bernardino recruiting office. He likes to talk the square mileage of said county like he was somewhere. It's the middle of the damned desert. His audience was lizards and snakes.

There's a reason I NEVER give him the address of any board I post on.

I don't know why people do it. Everyone was Marine Recon or Army Airborne. Never met a cook or clerk in a bar. Every damned one was a killer. Well, if you're such a killer, why feel the need to challenge others and prove it after a couple of shots? I'd mostly talk my out of it by buying a drink. I've got nothing to prove. If I had a nickel for every guy who claimed to be special ops, force recon, ranger, and otherwise super hero I would have enough money to finance Gunny's sex change operation. That includes the knock down, snot slinging, rolling in the mud fight pre- AND post-!

I have no idea why somebody would do that kind of thing. If you served and you did your jo to the best of your ability, when and how you were supposed to do it, no matter what the job was, then dammit there is plenty of honor and pride in that. I don't care if your sole function in military service was counting rusty paper clips, you served and you served well, then you did more than 99% of the population already!

The USS Wisconsin was still a commissioned battleship when I was at LFTCLant. I my have it confused with the Iowa. TYouring boats for fun wasn't exactly my thing. We got all-expense paid vacations from the Navy. I don't recognize where it's moored.

Perianne. It's the same in every port. Even along the Mississippi. New York, Philadelphia, the West Coast cities. Water is sometimes only a few FEET below street levels. That happens to be the Elizabeth River, which is part of Hampton Roads, which is an extension of the Chessapeake Bay, which is at the Atlantic Ocean...three miles from my front door.
