As a Catholic, I have no idea what he was doing. May have been some sort of confession ritual. Apparently priests have a wide leeway on how confessions are performed. My Mom told me once, their priest in Florida had everyone stand up, asked them to confess in silence, then they all said a few prayers for Penance.

When I went to mass in Mexico, the priest held confession just before Communion. There was a long line of folks who went past him at the altar who whispered in his ear, gave an embarrassed look, then sat back down. Apparently that's the thing there.

I don't see how he was smacking them hard. And with regards to 'where were the parents'? Some where in the line. The rest were probably in the pews.
