This Marine vet was banned from his kid’s school after objecting to Islam lessons

By Emma Brown February 23

John Kevin Wood says his daughter’s school has banned him from campus for more than a year, illegally punishing him for raising objections to classroom lessons about Islam. Now he’s gone to court for help, asking a judge to remove the ban so he can watch his daughter graduate from high school.

“She’s in the final semester of her senior year, and as it stands right now, she’s going to have to go through that life experience without her dad there,” said Kate Oliveri, a lawyer from the Michigan-based Thomas More Law Center who is representing the Wood family.

The dispute dates to October 2014, when Wood’s daughter showed him several assignments for her 11th grade World History class at La Plata High in Charles County, Md.

She had been asked to memorize the Five Pillars of Islam. She had been asked to write and recite the shahada, the Muslim statement of faith: There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. She had been taught, according to school papers submitted to federal court, that most Muslims’ faith is “stronger than the average Christian.”

The lessons also taught that Islam was a “peaceful religion,” court papers say, and that “jihad” is a “holy war waged on behalf of Islam as a religious duty; a personal struggle in devotion to Islam especially involving spiritual discipline.” Wood is a Marine veteran who had lost two buddies in combat in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm.

The school wasn’t just teaching Islam but was promoting it, it seemed to Wood, and in a way that amounted to an assault on his family’s Christian faith.

When Wood called to complain about the assignments and request alternative work for his daughter, school officials issued a no-trespass order against him. Wood has not been allowed to set foot on the campus of La Plata High since October 2014.

The order, which Wood’s lawyers posted online, says that Wood “made verbal threats against the school.” The legal battle now centers on whether the school system unfairly punished Wood for speaking out.

In court papers, Wood says he never threatened physical harm against the school or its staff. Instead, he said, he threatened to take his concerns public by going to the media and to lawyers.

The dispute turned into a legal battle last month, when Wood and his wife, Melissa, sued the Charles County school system, alleging that La Plata High’s lessons on Islam violated their daughter’s civil and constitutional rights.

“The First Amendment prohibits the promotion of the religion of Islam over other faiths, such as Christianity or Judaism, in our public schools,” says the complaint, filed in U.S District Court in Maryland.

Katie O’Malley-Simpson, spokeswoman for the Charles County school system, said she could not comment on pending litigation. But when Wood first raised concerns about the assignments in 2014, the school system released a statement clarifying what students learn in its World History classes.

The unit to which Wood objected is meant to teach about Middle Eastern empires and the role that Islam — along with politics, culture, economics and geography — played in the history and development of those empires, the statement said. The course covers other religions in other units; students study Christianity when they learn about the Renaissance, for example, and Hinduism and Buddhism in units about India and China.

Now Wood is asking the court to rescind the no-trespass order, alleging that the ban violates his First Amendment rights to speak about and advocate for his daughter’s activities at a public school. School officials banned him only because they disagreed with him and “wanted to quash criticism of their pro-Islamic curriculum,” he argued in a motion filed on Monday.

O’Malley-Simpson said she had not yet seen Wood’s motion asking the court to rescind the ban, and therefore could not comment on it.

Notice how the religion the Public education System is quick and adamant about teaching is Islam?
And not Jesus Christ and his gospel???

There needs to be some consequences for bad behavior. School officials seemingly can do anything they want to do.

Sad thing is they won't let him relocate his child. I've dealt with the NoVa/MD schools. They are beyond pr*cks. I had i out with them a couple of times over my daughter. The first was because my daughter (well trained that she is ;) ) refused to recognize MLK as a hero. The second was because I refused to tell my daughter to not defend herself when another kid hit her first.

I was on my way to work for te latter, and I had all my bells n whistles on and I think sneering at the nigger behind the counter is an understatement. They have a good old boy net work any hillbilly would be proud of from janitor on up in that region.

I'd move south, but that's just me.

World history is a required graduation course in most states. With that said, the basics of Christianity are also taught within the units cited by the school. Basically the main tenets of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism are covered. Obviously they are not covered in depth.

They're so greedy there the won't even let you put your kids in school by the babysitters. She had to trek my kids all the way back by my house to take them to school. Only place I ever had that problem.

I don't doubt that. My point is a required course doesn't have an option to give 'alternative' lesson, as the material on comparative religions is well required.

One cannot defend one's own faith or country with 0 understanding of what the enemy is about. I certainly am not defending Islam or schools that provide 'lessons' to get into the 'feel of it,' but the 5 pillars does not fit that bill.

I'm not up on required course at the moment. That b* I used to be married to and myself have agreed on one thing: our grandkids go to private school at the church. It's a Christian one.

Religion should not be taught in public schools, nor should any religion be glossed over. Islam has been nothing but a disaster throughout its history. There's nothing good to be learned from it. It's killed millions in its name and hasn't progressed from Day One to date. At least Christians grew up.

I'm not teaching my kid Satanism either. It's stupid.

The school can go to hell!
I'll teach my son all he ever needs to know about any religion--its not the ffing school's job!
Damn sure not the stinking lib's job. They are concentrating on making Islam mainstream here, it is not and should never be , as its a damn murdering and enslaving cult!
I'll burn that fkking book when my son reaches that grade.
Bastards are then trying to get too deep into my raising my son--ffkk them all!!!!!!!!!!!!
I already have over 3 dozen history books from early 1900 up to 1950's before they were rewritten to meet socialist/lib/education system crap.
I know more about history than most college professors .
And all that knowledge came from before they corrupted it to meet their ffing liberal PC standards.

Islam teaches to murder or enslave ALL that is not of Islam. A damn fact yet schools want to teach it as if it truly is a religion of peace! FFKK THAT!! --Tyr

You and me both, sis. I had NO idea who or what Islam was. Wish I still didn't. It's okay to rape your goat but you can kill your sister for being raped. Not my cup of tea.

I have family in public high school. the kid told me that Islam did get more time than Christianity and more depth.
Christianity was breezed over while islam got specific doctrine and historical context.

she didn't say it that way but basically that's what she described.

no Hinduism or Buddhism taught so far.
this is all in history Class.

Kat's description is how the government /school system puts it out for public consumption(to quell righteous fears) , in order to hide the glaring fact that they are wholeheartedly advancing Islam over all other religions!
Thats the truth of it , anybody thats says otherwise is either a damn lair or else blinded and gullible IMHO.

IF PEOPLE WOULD SHUT THE HELL UP DEFENDED ISLAM WHEN THEY DO NOT KNOW CRAP ABOUT IT, WE'D ALL BE BETTER OFF.
But no--they want to re-vomit the lying government/media lines.. ffing idiots... -Tyr

So, without proof of "verbal threats", and on a person's word, this school is able to keep this Dad from coming into his own daughter's school? Sounds very sketchy to me.

I would take her out of that school, get someone to home school her if need be, and then sue.

Sketchy but true. MD/NoVa schools own your children and you dare not disagree with the PC crap they stuff in your kid's head. They WILL come after you and take your kid away if they can. You as a parent are supposed to support what the school teaches, not what's right and wrong. That's just how it is there. They WILL smear you all over the news if you dare disagree.

Then THAT would be on the teacher. The texts are set up to cover each religion in either World History or Ancient History-depending on the school. Catholic schools teach it in ancient history-7th grade, at least in IL.

If you child is in public schools, just look at the state standards under history-what should be taught is there. As for religions-they have the same requirements for each. Basic tenets.

An aside regarding religious schools, at least the Catholic ones. They also have a unit on comparative religions-including the differences between Catholicism and Protestantism.

Actually , most often not on the teacher in any meaningful way these days. As teachers doing such are protected by the system above--since its the PC THING TO DO.
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THAT REALITY MY FRIEND.
That blind eye being used to further the socialist/lib/PC agenda.
I was fighting this type crap all thru my daughter's schooling and she is now 28 years old--so you see how far it goes back.
And we in the deep South, are way behind the rest of the nation, in all of this dem/socialist/pc trash.-Tyr

I told my counselor's daughter to piss the f- off. And you can bet I was on my way to work and had all my braids n whistles on. If you're waiting on me to tell my baby girl that she can't punch the fuck out of a wetback who hit her first, don't.

You can't do that. Want to bet? Hit my little girl you're just lucky she got hold of you first.
