I just heard David Gergen say on CNN that Reagan didn't need the Presidency to define him or "make his life". He wanted it, but didn't need it. For one thing, he had Nancy, and she was his rock. He appeared to me to be a confident man with an upbeat approach to life.

Contrast that with our current candidates, and the Dems as well. Some of these folks will do absolutely anything to get in the Oval Office. It's disturbing, and I think it puts some of us on edge.

Reagan wasn't a politician by career. Pretty much the goal at some point (realistic or not) for any politician is to be president.

I sort of agree. He had a career in acting and was a spokesman for GE after that. But at what age does one have to want to hold office to be considered a politician?
