Well I don't know the technical stuff, just that it's getting slower and even slower since I first posted. Can't access 'thanks' at all, though was able to a couple hours ago.

Working on it and looking into it, you know that!!

They reported a kernel issue... server issue yesterday, and of course said it was fixed. The site continued to be slow after that, although back to normal for some periods. I've been in contact with the host of course, initially to get them to get us back online. But I've seen the slowness as well, and it drives me nuts. I've kept the ticket open. Coincidentally I had just updated it once again just a few minutes ago, letting them know that things are continuing to bog down for all of us. Hopefully I'll get a response sooner than later, and hopefully it's something they can fix easily.

What I'm more nervous about is if this ultimately leads to a server move/update. Often they will do a rebuild and then restore from backups. My experience is that they take forever and can be nightmares. But this is me just jumping to conclusions at this point.

This is what they are saying happened yesterday:

A kernel panic (sometimes abbreviated as KP[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_panic#cite_note-1)) is an action taken by an operating system (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system) upon detecting an internal fatal error (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatal_system_error) from which it cannot safely recover. The term is largely specific to Unix (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix) and Unix-like (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix-like) systems; for Microsoft Windows (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Windows) operating systems the equivalent term is "stop error (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_error)" (or, colloquially, "Blue Screen of Death (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Screen_of_Death)").
The kernel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_%28computer_science%29) routines that handle panics, known as <code>panic()</code> in AT&T (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT%26T_Corporation)-derived and BSD (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Software_Distribution) Unix source code, are generally designed to output an error message (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Error_message) to the console (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_console), dump an image of kernel memory to disk for post-mortem debugging (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-mortem_debugging) and then either wait for the system to be manually rebooted, or initiate an automatic reboot (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reboot_%28computer%29).[2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_panic#cite_note-2) The information provided is of a highly technical nature and aims to assist a system administrator (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_administrator) or software developer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_developer) in diagnosing the problem. Kernel panics can also be caused by errors originating outside of kernel space. For example, many Unix OSes panic if the init (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Init) process, which runs in userspace, terminates.

Now that one is a different problem entirely which I've been looking into as well. Just clicking on the notifications when getting thanks takes forever and a day. That existed prior to this. :(

Lag of about 1 second for a 'Thanks' to process. A little slower than normal, but nothing out of line for me.

I would guess East Coast internet weather, but since Kathi is in AZ, that doesn't make sense.

Had some thanks when I first logged in earlier, took about 30-40 seconds to load when I clicked on the notifications.

Just had some more now, and after waiting about the same time again, it came back with a MYSQL error and wouldn't even load. :(

I "may" have made some advances with the "thanks" and the notifications &/or clicking on "recent thanks"

For me, it would take anywhere from 10-15 seconds in my dreams, and up to 40-60 seconds as it was doing earlier. Now it seems MUCH faster, for me at least.

Was anyone else seeing slowness with the thanks? And if so, can you try again? Only took me like 2 months to figure that one out, so I hope it's fixed anyway!

The running ticket from yesterday is still running! I have it updated from everything this morning and hopefully someone will be on it soon. It was upgraded yesterday from regular support to management. So I hope it's not stuck in a queue not being looked at, but I also don't want to be a jerk and keep opening tickets. If no reply soon I will copy/paste into a new ticket.

I think it's going to remain as-is until whatever is wrong is fixed, and I don't know what that is! I still say SQL, as everything affected is being drawn from that database. But I will keep updated as I find out more. The old ticket went unanswered, the new ticket is sitting now for 30 mins. But it is in Texas, even if they do offer 24hr support

Yes, although a pain in the ass, it shows that I'm not the only one experiencing the slowness. As I had predicted, here is the response I just got:

The website http://www.debatepolicy.com/forum.php seems to be loading fine from our end. Could you please check and let us know if the issue persists?

Now, we all KNOW that after the past 24 hours that the site is having all kinds of issues. Just loading it a time or 2 won't tell the whole story. But for now, I guess we have no choice but to assume all is resolved, and maybe just update on continuing issues. If things persist, I will update the ticket and push.

While this will resolve itself, for sure - I'm more concerned about the 'thanks' problem, which is deadly slow. If it dies, the only resolution is to disable that hack, which is very popular here. :(

I don't have a problem with thanks. And you disable that and you're back to to the rep whining and crying. The board IS however loading slower than sh*t. There's a problem somewhere and I don't think it's on your end. You're paying these geeks money, tell them to buck up and fix their sh*t.

The song thread is you, I don't know how or why, but no one else here has that issue.

But you are 100% correct with the rest and I know it emanates on their end. I'm no full server geek, but I worked on computers and in server rooms for a living, I just don't have access obviously when it's something like this.

Knock on wood, these guys have been better than any of the other hosts I have had prior, both in speed and knowledge. Anyway, I just further updated and asked if they could possibly restart the mysql services, or something, to see if we can help with the slowdown.

Let's see how long this takes to submit this post...

It can't be me. I have a high speed, low drag computer and have no trouble on any other board. When you factor in I've had 4 different ISP's the past 4 years, I don't think it's me. I just take it with a grain of salt. Kinda sucks I can't post music, but I just deal. The boards I CAN post music on I just don't want anything to do with them because they're full of d*ckheads. I've found the time periods around the noon hour during the week, and primarily on Wednesdays when large Internet sites normally do their maintenance during the day, and Friday's after approx. 5 pm Eastern...there is a systematic slowdown due more people accessing the Web.

Call me crazy, or out of my league on this. But that is just something that has been happening for years. Even if most of my posts here are ignored by those who deny everything because THEY ARE SMARTER than me. Just ask them.

I would guess that the slowdown you observe during those times is more likely due to internet demand in your local area rather than the internet as a whole.

I have updated the ticket once again.

I think the errors that Kath got, which I have seen as well, are related to the overall slowness.

The board relies heavily on MYSQL to run the board, almost everything is stored in there. The error she got means more or less that the database didn't respond and timed out. Other times it works but takes a little while. I've been monitoring the board resources and see no reason as to why SQL should be overloaded, so not sure why it's not responding. Hopefully the host can help more.

Got an automated email that Abbey just got the same error. All of them point to "post_thanks" as what's not responding. Kath said notifications, but I assume that was checking them when receiving thanks? While we have slowness in other areas, I'm wondering if the "thanks" addon is dying. I could uninstall and reinstall, but we did that for a different reason once, and we will lose all of the data if we do so, if it comes to that. Personally, I couldn't care less. I don't know if others would be unruly if all those numbers were reset.

I'll keep peeking into things.

I started posting before you did, just took my fat fingers longer!

Yeah, it's live, but maybe you don't have email setup within your browser? When you click that, it should automatically open an email up to that address. Works for me. Could always do manually too. Or just ask me here.

I like that it sent you an email. :thumb:

Ironically, I tried to thank you for this, but it wouldn't work at all. You may be right that it is dying. :(

Nope, for you an others:

I have disabled the thanks system for now. You can still view the old thanks, but cannot hit the thanks button for now.

And please update this thread if you feel there is any difference posting and using notifications, now that it's been disabled. I wouldn't have thought one had anything to do with the other, but it seems to be responding faster now that I disabled that.

Lightening fast now that the 'Thanks' have been disabled. And pulling up old 'Thanks' are also immediate.

You found the problem, hoser!

Yup, everything is working fast again.

Hmmmm.... I don't know if we try reinstalling the system over the top of the dying one - or delete and reinstall which wipes everything. I'm thinking/guessing that this ultimately ends up in all of us starting over.

I already sent along an apology to the host. While things did die on their end which started this, the 3rd party app dying was out of their control at that point. I guess something got corrupted. :(

I'd vote for reinstall and hope for the best... if not, oh well!

Once you are sure Thanks can't be fixed, I'd rather lose data than not have it at all.
It is the perfect thing for lazy folks like me!

Reinstalled now and re-enabled. I will disable it if it starts acting up again though.

All data should still be fine this route, but nothing changed on the database end, only reinstalled files. Cross your fingers!

Yeah, I can't remember it being so fast.

I think the slowness kind of crept up on us until it was almost completely broken.

I was just screwing with Jim yesterday, but yeah... pretty slow this morning.

Those of us "in the know" know you were just screwing with him. Those of us that don't know us, don't. Not my problem.

Since the GF took over the computer for half the day I wouldn't friggin' know if the board was slow. Grrr. I'll have to wait until tomorrow to pick on Jim again. Maybe.

How has the "thanks" system been for everyone, or for checking the notifications anyway? I haven't received any errors since. Any severe slowness in checking them for anyone?

SO awesome that it took me HOW long to figure out that a 2 second fix resolved our issues? LOL We're good now though, so that's cool! Gunny was in there eating some wires.

There are still some issues when checking notifications (thanks, PM, rep...). Not sure why it's quick one minute, and then still takes awhile at other times. It doesn't seem to be server slowness causing it, because anything else I do at the very same time is quick as can be. Just an Fyi that I am aware and peeking around.

I just noticed, I can click on the 'recent thanks' link on the navbar above - with no thanks - and just click it to view older ones, over and over and over - and no delay. But when I receive a thanks or 2, that's when it seems to take forever to load.

I told all you bastards I was getting old and going blind!

So it turns out there is an update for the "thanks" system we use, which I just installed. I honestly don't know all/any fixes it makes. But the thanks system was definitely responding slower and slower at times, and at times even causing errors. Then it also affected the entire board due to this. If someone else was waiting forever to check their thanks, and another person did a search at the same time, that also could have given the 2nd person an error instead of their results.

So the update is installed. Hopefully throughout the day we can see if the response of the checking of the thanks is still flaky, or if it helps stabilize using the board at all.
