TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Two detained Iranian-Americans were shown on state television Wednesday night in a program contending they tried to foment regime change in Iran with the support of the U.S. government.

The 50-minute program showed a montage of disparate quotes from Haleh Esfandiari and Kian Tajbakhsh combined to form what could be interpreted as incriminating statements, which their supporters and the U.S. government called illegitimate and coerced.

The scholars appeared alongside footage of anti-government protests in the former Soviet Union and of President Bush saying that the "untamed fire of freedom will reach the darkest corners of our world."

Esfandiari, 67, appeared first, describing her activities as director of the Middle East program at the Washington-based Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. She has been held largely incommunicado since May except for brief telephone conversations with her mother, whom she was visiting before her detention.

"The aim of the Iran program was to plan sessions of lectures," she said. "When people came to the U.S. for lectures, policy makers listened to their lectures ... and a network was formed."

It was not clear if the broadcast signaled any impending change in the cases of Esfandiari and Tajbakhsh, an urban planning consultant detained since mid-May.

British sailors detained for two weeks for allegedly entering Iranian waters were freed in April after appearing in videos in which they "admitted" trespassing. Other people have been jailed for long periods even after their purported confessions were broadcast.

How much more of this shit are we going to take from Iran. This is always their MO caputure innocent people make them get on tv ad admit lies, try them and have them executed. They didn't have the balls to go through with it all the way with the British soldiers because they knew they would be hit with everything the US and Britan had. Now they are gooing to do this with innocent US citizens, President Bush needs to do something immediatly. Even if we put a bigger US Navy pressence in that area they will know were not going to play with them anymore and might release these innocent people, and if they don't then we bomb the shit out of Iran and all of the terrorists they harbor and support.

How many Iraqis and Iranians are we holding on alleged security offenses?

We are holding al queda members for attacks on US soldiers and the iraqi's are holding iraqi's for similar charges.

We are holding iranian agents captured in iraq who are supplying shea and sunni groups with weapons. And fighting with the al queda elements.

Now I think a jihadi trolls like you should also be locked up. I think exchanging you for those prisoners would be a good deal.

What you lack is proof to back up your statements. It seems we are actually detaining and imprisoning lots of innocent people and we arent really doing anything as quaint as trials or presenting evidence against the detainee.

The Associated Press was able to track 245 of those formerly held at Guantanamo. The investigation, which spanned 17 countries, found:

Once the detainees arrived in other countries, 205 of the 245 were either freed without being charged or were cleared of charges related to their detention at Guantanamo.

Forty either stand charged with crimes or continue to be detained.

Only a tiny fraction of transferred detainees have been put on trial. The AP identified 14 trials, in which eight men were acquitted and six are awaiting verdicts. Two of the cases involving acquittals — one in Kuwait, one in Spain — initially resulted in convictions that were overturned on appeal.

The Afghan government has freed every one of the more than 83 Afghans sent home. Lawmaker Sibghatullah Mujaddedi, the head of Afghanistan's reconciliation commission, said many were innocent and wound up at Guantanamo because of tribal or personal rivalries.

At least 67 of 70 repatriated Pakistanis are free after spending a year in Adiala Jail. A senior Pakistani Interior Ministry official said investigators determined that most had been "sold" for bounties to U.S. forces by Afghan warlords who invented links between the men and al-Qaida. "We consider them innocent," said the official, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue.

All 29 detainees who were repatriated to Britain, Spain, Germany, Russia, Australia, Turkey, Denmark, Bahrain and the Maldives were freed, some within hours after being sent home for "continued detention."

Well we all know what a great source the ap is for news. Anyone that was tried and released was done so in their own country. Not by the US. All detainees are still being held. They were combatants. Most that were released immediately went back to fighting the US in afgan or iraq. Nothing like releasing the enemy troops to let them rejoin their forces.

You have a lot of reading to do to catch up on all the proof and other facts I have posted on this board. Being a jihadist it must really be irritating to see your boys losing at every turn. But don't worry we will eventually get you too.

Again you fail to provide any evidence to back that up. The US is holding many innocent people and we are not charging them or even presenting evidence against them.

You can don the macho crap swagger and call me a jihadist and display your bigotry proudly but its not me who looks stupid as a result.

You can't try to make sense of people who don't make any sense. Hatred is a very blinding emotion.

Prisoners captured in raids in iraq are turned over to the iraqi's. If they are deemed innocent they are released. If not they are held for trial. By the iraqi's. Our troops don't like this arrangement but its the way things work there. The only ones being held by US forces are al queda operatives and iranian operatives. They are vicious murders not innocent people.
