View Full Version : Why be liberal?

I think it’s fair to say that there are extreme liberals in America as well as extreme conservatives, and the majority of Americans consider themselves too clean to be in either camp and call themselves moderates.
Let’s examine what would happen if either fringe simply went away.
If all the conservatives went away the liberals would have their way and you’d have rampant socialism. That has failed every time it’s been tried.
If all the liberals went away we would return to the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. All men are created equal, certain unalienable rights, minimization of government, low taxes, and maximum freedom. Who would not want that?
So why would anyone choose to be liberal, in the contemporary sense of the word?

Because they like screwing their fellow man and want to take as much from someone who can afford to give. They want to line their pockets with other peoples money.
Basically every society needs a criminal eliment to balence itself out and that's what the Liberal's provide a criminal adultrus and gay eliment.

Perhaps one choosing to be a liberal cannot be explained?
Abortion: I used to be very strongly pro-life, until I discussed the issue with a number of women and realized there can be compelling reasons to have an abortion. And anyway, it's not our business; it's the decision of the pregnant woman.
I've always liked gay people so it wasn't a stretch to be in favor of full civil rights for them, including the right to get married.
Guns? I don't care about them one way or the other. I don't own one and don't feel the need for one. I don't care if you own guns, but I don't see why anybody needs an assault weapon.
Flag burning amendment? A stupid idea. If you see someone burning an American flag, go beat the crap out of them. We don't need a frickin' amendment to the Constitution.
The environment. This is where I really separate myself from the conservatives. They don't generally recognize environmental problems as problems, and whenever it comes down to the economy vs. the environment, they invariably come down on the side of the economy.

Finally a reasonable explanation.
1. I used to not really care about abortion- until I saw a live sonogram and realized what an idiot I had been for not understanding that a fetus was a human life. My position on this now is due to practicality and in line with Roe v. Wade, which is that abortion should be allowed in the first trimester. Although I’d rather see it abolished in all cases I think this is a reasonable compromise that would save millions of lives while we argue over the remaining abortions.
2. I’ve never liked or disliked queers. I just happen to think that anyone choosing to live a sinful, unhealthy life should not get special privileges from the government.
3. Some people need assault weapons in order to make the government fearful of them. I believe that is one of the reasons that we have a 2nd Amendment.
4. I agree with your position, but I don’t think that is a liberal vs conservative issue.
5. Again I don’t think this is a liberal vs. conservative issue. As a conservative, I try to conserve resources. As an avid hiker and outdoorsman, I enjoy a clean environment as much as the next. As an environmental engineer, I find that people who make profits are the ones who can afford my services. As a conservationist, I am in full support of nuclear power. As a home owner in the mountains of North Carolina and an occasional beachgoer, I support siting of windmills on mountain tops and along the coasts.

Finally a reasonable explanation.
I don't see why we should have to "explain" our positions when it is conservatives who overwhelmingly come down on the side of big business over individuals, religious persecution and militarism. Care to explain why you are a conservative? Besides the fact that you believe it to be "right?"

General observations on libs, by me. Note not all Libs are the same and there are differences in some cases by 'libs' and most Democrats:
1. While I am very smart, educated, and make a decent living, I DO recognize that most others are not so bright, uneducated, and need the government to take care of them. I CARE, therefore I support all proposals that move wealth from mostly the IGNORANT Republican nazis, that ALL inherited their wealth, save 2 or 3.
2. Because it should be a policy to help the stupid, minorities, and other victims of our unjust society, I choose NOT to give much of my wealth to charities, as that only leaves an 'easy out' for those arguing against the right of government.
3. Perhaps more a signpost of education or skepticism since many on the 'right' also have problems with religion, but overwhelmingly the attempts to link the 'religious right' with conservativism comes from those in #1 frame of mind. "If I think, than there can be no God." Hello 'God is Dead.'
4. There are Americans with 'money, Democratic activists, all Republicans, and victims. Guess which of the first two support the victims? Victims can be women; children in preschool; children of single parents; children of parents that should divorce but don't; children whose parents divorce, but fight; children of parents that are conservative; children in preschools that need sex education, diversity training, etc.

Interesting discussion! Here's how I'd edit the good-words used by GW in Ohio - My apologies AND thanks for the words:
Abortion: Aborting a viable or eventually-viable baby is murder. It's akin to Islamic terrorism, unless the physical life of the mother is at grave risk. It's blatant discrimination and morally EVIL that a Father has NO rights to his unborn baby.
I've always liked gay people, which is why i'd love to see them get HELP for their illness. I can't stand the thought of creating special laws 'just for them'. It's anti-american.
Guns? I don't care if you own guns; but I don't see why anybody needs an assault weapon - not that I'd disagree with our rights to own them. The 'need' factor is hard to prove. However, I'd bet Money MOST gun-assaults are with off-the-shelf normal guns, not "assault weapons" anyway.
Flag burning amendment? A stupid idea. If you see someone burning an American flag, go beat the crap out of them. We don't need a frickin' amendment to the Constitution. I would, however, support laws which protect a person from prosecution/lawsuit for kicking the ass of a flag-burner.
The environment. This is where I really separate myself from the liberals. They don't generally recognize environmental problems as problems; They see environmental concerns as a way to build money for their constituents AND power for themselves. They create false dilemma and whenever it comes down to the Science vs. The Environmentalist Relgion, they invariably come down on the side of Hyperbole, and Hysteria.
