There is nothing I love more than to get lost in the Mountains of my home state for a few days. I do nothing but fish for trout, drink a few beers and shoot the bull around the camp fire with my closest buds. The quiet serenity at night when the full moonlight filters through the trees along the stream and the sound of a distant owl calling for his mate is just incredibly calming for me.If this isn't Heaven on Earth I don't know what is.That's where I'm headed in the morning for a few days.It can't come soon enough.

I'm with you on that. I'm most comfortable out in the boonies.

I've got a bunch of pics posted from different fishing trips & scenery in the Photography thread from around AK.

Hmm... the only version I know of is just plain old Dolly Varden. But this is here in AK, so it's definitely northern, lol.

When a Rainbow Trout runs to the sea and returns, it's a Steelhead.

When a Dolly does, it's an Arctic Char - probably the prettiest fish I've ever seen - still got the telltale pink spots :

I'm REALLY trying to stay away from this thread. Trout fishinf in the civilian world is obviously NOT trout fishing in the military world. I read this when it first posted and had to go just sit in the other room and watch CSI Miami. :laugh2::laugh2::laugh2:

Fishing needs to be for Large mouth bass! That's about the only good thing around here unless you go out on a boat getting some striper.

I'm STILL laughing. :laugh2::laugh2::laugh2:

Trust me, I can fish. I don't think I've ever been fresh water fishing so I don't want anyone to take offense. But trout fishing in the military is going down some guy's drawers. :laugh2::laugh2:

Yeah, if he comes on a fishing trip with us, we'll stick him on a canoe and pull him alongside of us. :)

That sure looks like a King Salmon to me, with the black spots. I'd have to see inside the mouth to be sure, though, the mouth is black on Kings.

On an almost serious note, I think it depends on where you are. We always caught reds and bluefins in S FL. And if you dressed like THAT? You'd sweat to death in less than hour.

I DO appreciate the art to fishing. I wouldn't know how to catch a trout with anything less than a .243 Winchester. I don't even know where the Hell they live. I just know if they lived anywhere around me they must've seen me coming first.

Last time I went fishing it was when I went to visit Jeff in Georgia, and my brother John went for that trip too. Jeff's buddy had a nice pond on his property and let us fish there. I didn't catch a damn thing but like a 2 inch sunny, some sunburn and heat exhaustion. It had to be like 138 degrees out that day, and I generally overheat as it is. Holy crap, I thought I nearly died. Had to go into Jeff's truck and turn the air on. I felt like a patient who was sucking in some pure oxygen, with my face planted against the vent.

From now on, I have little fishies right here in my air conditioned room. Or I can order the little bastards when I go to a restaurant. Hell, I'd settle for McDonald's filet o fish crap before sitting out in that damn sun again.

The steelhead here on the Rogue is legendary.
Nice brown trout fishing at Lake of the Woods in Oregon.

I used to catch weakies in Long Island Sound and off
Avalon NJ. Lots of flounder and bluefish, too.

Some of the best was fishing for Brook Trout on
the Military Academy grounds in West Point. Ultralight
gear was always best using black roostertails.
