The most-telling line for me:
"The other big misconception is that it is a cult, delusion, or something that is really harmful," Riviera says. "It's not a choice. I don't know how people can claim it's some sort of fantasy.
"For most people, it's just a part of their personal exploration of their identity."
....that last line -
They want to explore their identity because they didn't have parents with enough backbone to help them establish a true sense of self. Just saddening. This will be the next group of 'protected' citizens with special rights akin to LGBTQ.
