`The U.S. Military Academy at West Point in New York is investigating a photo showing 16 black female cadets in uniform with their fists raised in a salute that critics are calling a gesture of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, the Army Times reports (http://www.armytimes.com/story/military/2016/05/04/army-investigating-if-these-west-point-cadets-making-political-statement-uniform/83950452/).`

"We can confirm that the cadets in this photo are members of the U.S. Military Academy's Class of 2016," West Point’s director of public affairs, Lt. Col. Christopher Kasker, said in a statement. "Academy officials are conducting an inquiry into the matter."

According to the Army Times, not many details are known about the photo, although it has since been shared wildly in military circles, along with the claim that the women are supporting BLM. Critics are reportedly concerned that the photo violates the Department of Defense Directive 1344.10, which cautions against "partisan political activity" when in uniform. `

I saw this and wondered if the Academy is going to take action.

It is not only political in nature - that's the least of it, It is also
Racist in nature which goes against the Core Values not only of
the Academy, but the Army and DOD as well.

It certainly should be investigated and it certainly appears that these women find the Black Lives Matter or Black Power Movement important to their lives. Which actually puts them at odds with the careers they are pursuing. They should be expelled or at best given a year to consider which path they wish to follow.

I'd say the same if it were males or whites involved in the same types of organizations that are about separateness, not unity of common purpose that by need, the military must be.

I've been there and it certainly looks like it. The buildings on the
main campus are all the same architecture and granite stone.

After all, The Army Times are the ones that released it, so
even if photo-shopped, the authenticity of the deed should not
be questioned.

Add to it..that these 'Cadets' are in uniform as well.

Yes, that's West Point alright...

I am 99% certain.

It is a magnificent place, full of history and unforgettable sights.

Anyone that visits NYC or that area owes it to themselves to take a
drive North off the Tappan Zee Bridge on U.S. Rt 9W. It is not all that
far from NYC proper. That route takes you to the Thayer Gate. The Museum
is right close by. Going further are monuments and statues of our
Patriots of the Revolution...Noted leaders of all other conflicts, and a
National Cemetery.

When stationed in Queens NYC, I used to go up there at least once a
month to fish or bow hunt. The MP's were the range wardens and
proper I.D., license, and a post permit was required.

Caution, though. If you do visit, Do Not Have ANY firearms with you!
In this day and age of heightened security, the MP's are likely to
be quite unforgiving.

Watch Billy Jack. Those are all white and indian kids. Raising their fists. It's a show of solidarity. Fine. I got a problem when you start USING them.

On the military side, I question the appropriateness of doing it in uniform. You do that bullshit on your own time, not as a representative of the US military. We represent ALL.

Exactly my point...

Totally wrong and they should be held accountable.

No military person is permitted to march, in uniform, in
a Gay Rights Parade, a KKK showing, or even a political rally
unless they are an INVITED color guard (political rally that is).

These Black Women West Point Cadets Started Online Fury With Raised-Fist Photo
[Mathew Rodriguez]
May 7, 2016

A photo of black female West Point cadets raising their fists spurred commenters online to call the women idiots, and the picture itself a "disgrace" that depicts "the demise of our military."

The women posed for the photo last week as part of a longstanding West Point tradition: dressing up to imitate 19th century, ultra-serious photos of West Point cadets. Some people said the girls were supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, which they say violates army code: The Department of Defense has a policy preventing service members from engaging in political activity while wearing a uniform or displaying a partisan political sign while on military land.

As of April 28, West Point has opened an investigation to determine whether the women in the photo were in violation of any code.

Online commenters have also thrown some sharp barbs at the cadets, comparing them to members of the Black Panther Party and saying politics have no place in uniform.
These Black Women West Point Cadets Started Online Fury With Raised-Fist Photo

Former drill sergeant John Burk was one of the first to criticize the photo in a May 3 blog post. In a subsequent email to the New York Times, Burk compared the raised fists to a Nazi salute.

The raised fist's history stretches back father than the BLM and Black Panther movements. Suffragists, socialists and labor movements have all adopted the gesture at one point in time. At its core, the symbol represents solidarity and support.

But, to Mary Tobin, a 2003 West Point graduate and mentor to many of the women in the photo, the raised fist references Beyoncé more th

Sixteen black West Point cadets who posed with raised fists for a pre-graduation picture that sparked debates on race and proper behavior in uniform won't be punished for the gesture, the U.S. Military Academy said Tuesday.

The decision, less than two weeks before the 16 female seniors are poised to graduate, found they didn't violate any U.S. Department of Defense rules limiting political activity.

An internal inquiry "found that the cadets did not pre-plan or set out to make a political statement," West Point's superintendent, Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen Jr., said in a letter to the student body.

...But the inquiry found the picture, one of multiple photos the women made in keeping with an informal campus tradition, captured a spur-of-the-moment gesture intended to demonstrate unity and pride in graduating, Caslen wrote. Groups of cadets often take Old Corps pictures in traditional dress uniforms to echo historical portraits.
