Trump calls for nationwide Concealed Carry

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump — who said he has a concealed carry permit — called for the expansion of gun rights including making those permits applicable nationwide.

In a position paper published on his website, Trump called for the elimination of gun and magazine bans, labeling them a “failure.”

It’s not a departure from what he’s said on the trail this year, though it does mark a shift from a position he took in his 2000 book “The America We Deserve,” where Trump stated that he generally opposes gun control but that he supported a ban on assault weapons and a longer waiting period to get a gun.

“Opponents of gun rights try to come up with scary sounding phrases like ‘assault weapons’, ‘military-style weapons’ and ‘high capacity magazines’ to confuse people. What they’re really talking about are popular semi-automatic rifles and standard magazines that are owned by tens of millions of Americans.” Trump wrote.

Trump said in the paper he has a concealed carry permit. The permits, which are issued by states, should be valid nationwide like a driver’s license.

“If we can do that for driving — which is a privilege, not a right — then surely we can do that for concealed carry, which is a right, not a privilege,” Trump touted.

Trump has apparently had a handgun permit for years; a 1987 Associated Press story said he had one at the time.

The real estate magnate called for expanding mental health treatment, saying that people with mental health issues who are violent must be off the street “before they can terrorize our communities.” Trump said the issue has been ignored.
“All of the tragic mass murders that occurred in the past several years have something in common – there were red flags that were ignored,” Trump said. “And why does this matter to law-abiding gun owners? Once again, because they get blamed by anti-gun politicians, gun control groups and the media for the acts of deranged madmen.”

Trump noted that when a tragedy happens gun control advocates will “immediately exploit it to push their political agenda,” and that the solutions they propose would have prevented the shooting.

Trump also claims the current background check system needs to be overhauled because “very few criminals are stupid enough to try and pass a background check” and get their guns illegally. Trump said that criminal and mental health records also must be included in background checks.

That deafening roar is the sound of the owners of 300 million American firearms owners cheering. And by the way…they vote.

They vote and they take note of dems/libs/leftists/socialist types that seek to disarm them in order to destroy this nation and enslave them in the future--which is exactly what those groups want to do..
Anybody that calls that a "conspiracy theory" (when its a sad fact) obviously has not paid attention to those morons when they speak !-Tyr

I like this idea.

It eliminates the big problem of getting hammered by another State when you're traveling with your weapon... we've all seen those horror stories in the news.

We already have it! All we have to do now is assert it!

I thoroughly approve.

The ludicrously restrictive gun laws we have in the UK (and the attitudes that go with it) are probably the single most stupid aspect of UK thinking today. I look upon your freedoms with envy !

It's an awesome idea. I really like the part where he calls out the failures of gun control. The only part I question is why it's the States that should issue the permits; why not the counties, as in voting(another constitutional right)?

How about he call for a nation-wide "federal government get the fuck out of state issues"? If the feds "grant" that privledge they may certainly take it away later...in the mean time, they have more info about gun owners.

It is a sticky mess of a subject!

States are empowered to issue permits for now.
Doing it federally may provide a database of legally purchased
and carried weapons. Some states do not recognize the laws of
others.

I saw the same thing with registrations on pleasure craft (boats),
of all things. When doing a boarding on one from out of state,
sometimes we could not confirm ownership if the registration was
not on board. That has gotten a lot better these days. I had 3
ways to search and confirm ownership now, but there are still many
out there that do not appear in searches because they were never entered
into a common database to begin with.

I can see the same thing with firearms, even though I could search using
the serial numbers.

The problem with boats and firearms is that if it was a private purchase
between two persons, there might not be a paper trail.

Who's he? Trump clearly said that it was right, not a privilege. I don't think that firearms are should be a state issue.

My good ol' boy state of WV has already passed a no permit conceal/carry law....or should I say a law re-enforcing our 2nd Amendment rights.

And liberals who support 2A and CnC are, by extension, conservative?

I know some who do. But I would guess most do not.

So I guess that there are some liberals who may hold a conservative position but are not conservative. :thumb:
