You fellow Vets are most gracious very often, especially the career folks.

I know we trade barbs, insults, occasional cursing, all in perhaps light humor.

Your comments about me missing my Dad and the circumstances he suffered
through really hit a nerve with me.

You folks are the Best! :salute:

Just don't leave the civvies out. A loss is a loss. It feels the same for them.

Elessar I know how you feel. lost my dad to cancer back in 1997. to late to take him to the WW2 memorial in DC

I wish you'd been able to. My dad passed also of cancer, in 2007. The trip to the WWII Memorial is one of the most treasured of recent memories.

It was not meant to be an intentional omission, rather to
emphasize the often unspoken bond there is with Vets of every Branch.

I know you didn't mean anything by it. Nor did I with my comment. I understand that bond all too well.

I watched both my gram's die slow death from cancer. It's horrible. I've watched a Marine bleed out while I had to carry on. I'd rather bleed out than rot in a bed. My point was just in EVERY instance, it always felt the same for me. It's like your guts are being torn out and you can't breathe.

And yes, we have a bond these civvies will never get. I quit trying to explain it. You just can't. We've seen things in real life they watch on DVD. The loss to me is the same. When you factor in you gave the command that caused that loss THEN it's worse. Guilt trip city on top of the loss. Bad dreams. The whole nine yards.

So I know what you meant. No explanation necessary. And :salute: to your father.

I wish he and I could have gone there. I was born at Walter Reed in D.C.
when Dad was in the Air Force with Investigative Services (OSI ?).

When the local Vets were flown out of Humboldt County CA to make
this trip, our men and women from the Sector and Air Station Humboldt Bay
were there to escort and assist them boarding the flights. It was always
a moving experience.

I was going to take my dad and foot the entire bill. everything. they already had the Nam wall built for my war. why not his???

That always puzzled me as well. That generation literally saved most of the
globe, but was neglected. I suppose many assumed the Iwo Jima statue
in Arlington to be sufficient. But WW II was a global conflict, not limited to
the South Pacific. Even North America was invaded and occupied up in the
Aleutian Islands. The Japanese firebombed the forest outside of Brookings
Oregon in an attempt to burn the forest out.

They have a WWII monument in DC. I ran by it almost every day. The thing that struck me was as the wars get older, no one cares for the monuments. The WWI Vets Memorial is a disgrace. Was always covered in mold and leaves.

That sucks badly. Sounds like a good public service project to make Eagle
in the Boy Scouts.
