I was 9. Woke that morning to what I thought was light snow. Ash, man...ash.

Dated video now - more than 25 years obviously, but a remarkable story

I was safely in IL. LOL! It was major news and while the effects were felt across the country, can't say I remember 'where I was' in the sense of JFK shooting or 9/11. Probably because it was natural and just darn cool-at least from IL!

I recall reading about a photographer who ensconced himself high up in a tree branch with his camera to get some good shots of the eruption. After all the ash had settled, and crews were looking for survivors, he was found in the tree, covered in ash — dead. An autopsy revealed his lungs filled with ash. He was still holding his camera. The film was processed, and revealed some spectacular views of the eruption.

I was in North (by God) Dakota, EPO of the Omega Station.

We had concerns of ash building on the insulators of the support wires. That would result in arcing, with a possible failure of the wires holding that 1200 foot tower in place.

I was in Houston Texas working ..
I remember the traffic there was horrible, they had 35,000 people moving to Houston each month then..
Hot weather was not as bad there as it was in Arkansas, at least not to me.-Tyr

I was 12. I recall hearing about it back then, obviously was a big story. But I was probably busy out playing a sport of some sort, or getting into trouble of some sort. :)

I was in Cape May, NJ working in the Training Center Gym.

But my folks were in Corvallis, Oregon. Dad said the ash was so dense
you did not dare go outside or drive. The ash would get sucked into
the carburetor and literally destroy the engine

San Diego, at Morse Code Operator School, listening to code at 22 words per minute, 8 hours a day until I was able to type as quickly as I heard the letters.

Learned about St. Helens late in the day, but life went on in Southern California like Nobody really cared.

SoCal cares about nothing much unless it involves them.

LA Times barely even mentions anything past San Fran.
Orange County Register and Long Beach Press-Telegram are no better.

My fondest memories were as a kid. My father was stationed a NAS KW for a couple of years. When I was there in 80 I lived in Miami. We'd get off work at 2AM then "ROAD TRIP!" We'd usually go to Key Largo. Not quite sure how I ended up in Key West. :alcoholic:
