In February of 1952, one of the worst storms to ever hit the East Coast struck New England, damaging an oil tanker off the coast of Cape Cod and literally ripping it in half. On a small lifeboat faced with frigid temperatures and 70-foot high waves, four members of the Coast Guard set out to rescue the more than 30 stranded sailors trapped aboard the rapidly-sinking vessel.

This is Legend for the Coast Guard, namvet.

Bernard Webber and his boat crew were unfailing and courageous. That
was a 36 foot, single screw Motor Life Boat.

I just hope Disney does not muck it up, as was done with 'The Guardian'.

There were two T-2 Tankers that day, the Pendleton and the Fort Mercer.

The 36 foot boat used that day was designed to carry a four man crew and 12 "survivors". 32 men from the Pendleton and all four of the crew were brought back to Chatam Hbr.

A 36' boat in 30' seas with a tidal surge coming? HO-LEE crap! DO their balls set off the metal detectors at airports?

I'm going to have to break down and actually read a link.

I stand corrected. 60' seas and 70 knot winds? I wouldn't want to go through that shit in a carrier.

One of our newer Fast Response Cutters, a Coastal Patrol Boat,
was named in his honor.

Back then, I do not know what limitations were placed on an MLB (Motor Life Boat) as far
as response goes. I know what they are these days.

That crew had balls of bronze, not brass!

Gold Lifesaving Medal is a rare honor, and all 4 got it.
Too bad a Medal of Honor cannot be given for domestic actions.
That crew would certainly have deserved it.

I'm actually dumbfounded. You'd have had to give me a box of Depends for THAT sh*t. A 36' wooden boat in 60' seas? Screw that. I got y'all's back here on the pier.

Yeah well that's BS. I never liked the way the Coast Guard treated. They were part of the DOT until sometime in the 90s. Y'all are the red-headed stepchildren of the military same as we are the Navy. They deserved more than medals for THAT crap.

Back in the 50's we were under the Treasury Department!
In 1967 put under the Department of Transportation:

In 2003, combined with many others under the umbrella
of Home Land Security. We were supposed to be the solid
linch pen of that Department.

Be my guest and share all you want. I really think we are
grossly under-appreciated.

We will NEVER go under DOD unless there is a declared war.
In peacetime only the U.S. Marshall's have greater Law Enforcement
than the USCG has, supporting other agencies and State Governments.

Hard argument. Y'all are military. You're also police. I think you should be under DoD myself. You're doing a Federal job defending our borders. Except the Southern one. The Feds can deploy you to war zones, but won't claim you. Sounds pretty sh*tty to me.

I had to mull this one over a few minutes. So we swear to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies both foreign and domestic ... but posse comitatus overrides that? I don't know anything about the CG's argument nor with who , but that's just stupid. You guard the waters of the US but posse comitatus preempts you from being military? All I can say about that is BULLSHIT. That is one lame ass excuse. So y'all just don't f-ing count? But they can deploy you to a foreign nation to get shot at like the rest of us?

What a bunch of bureaucratic bullshit.

Both of us hear you Gunny. As a Coastie Engineer I was used to working on shit that was first made in my Da's day.

But I don't feel so bad, the crew on the Cutter Smilax (WLIC 315) are working on a 72 year old tender.

I'm sure every squid on this board hears me. I might kick your ass in the bar in Singapore but you're my ride. I will admit I have a disconnect here. We ALL do our jobs. What makes one of us less than the other? And being a jarhead, I KNOW the crap y'all go through. This is unsat. My congressman's getting a letter. Trust THAT.

DO y'all get retirement and/or VA and that kind of stuff? I hate to sound ignorant but I only know about Coasties from having a humanitarian to a MEPS to take care of my grandmother until she could get back on her feet.

Oh yeah, We get the same pay & bennies (for the rates) that DOD has. Retirement too.

As for VA, yeppers that too. I'm heading out to West Palm tomorrow for a sonogram on the throat and next month I'm getting work done to the stbd paw. (not to mention the knees, the back and other parts damaged during the job)

Some of the guy's at the Station did indeed "beat feet". Others had already gone out on another boat.

One of the things taught is the saying, "You have to go out, you don't have to come back". This is straight from the Regulations of the Life-Saving Service of 1899.

What a bunch of bureaucratic bullshit.

It all boils down to federal law and jurisdiction, Gunny.

Posse Comitatus allows far more flexibility to enforce laws and regulations.
Only if Martial Law was declared could any DOD branch step in, the exception
being National Guard at the state level.

DOD is not allowed or mandated to Law Enforcement except in time of
a declared war. The Navy often carries a USCG detachment on board when
patrolling certain seaways. The CG team is allowed to board, search, detain,
and take control of contraband or illegal aliens. The DOD cannot do that.

As veterans, we all know most civilians have little idea what was required of all of us. But in today's World of Terror, and Drug running, and constant SEARCH & RESCUE missions rarely heard of, or reported. Like the Police. Coast Guard men, and women should be getting the Highest of our Admiration, and Respect....for KEEPING ALL OF US SAFE!

Thanks to ALL OF YOU! I proudly....:salute::salute::salute::salute::salute ::salute::salute:

Incredible bravery by the guys in the cutter, not to mention skill and some luck. Incredible resourcefulness by the guys in the torn-in-half ship, too. Pretty amazing story all around. :salute:
