Here's how much food it took to feed the crew of the USS Intrepid during WW2

As the saying goes, an army cannot run on an empty stomach. The US Navy is no exception to this rule — especially in the case of the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid during World War II.

After surviving kamikaze and torpedo attacks, the ship went on to serve during the Vietnam War and as a NASA recovery vessel. The USS Intrepid was decommissioned in 1974 and is currently berthed on the Hudson River in New York City. She houses the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

Here's what it took to keep the Navy and US Marines fed:

Kathianne. 200 lbs of coffee EVERY DAY would be more like it. While I was aboard my ships. I had a coffee cup FINGER, almost every hour I was awake.

Other vets know what I mean. COFFEE CUP FINGER's are part of the Uniform! Right Guys???

What else is going to keep you awake? The 1MC? Or troops acting like idiots. Or replaying the same damned movie over and over on the ship's intranet system? And yeah, it took me awhile to get that SNCO hook out of my finger.

And DON'T wash my damned coffee cup.
