Democrats bait-and-switch all the time.
Starts out simple-enough...Democrats rally uniformed and probably well-meaning people to demand higher wages. The higher wages become policy. Business lay-off or fire the previously lower-paid employees. Those folks then end up on gov't services; government dependency, and the Democrats get RE-ELECTED promising MORE gov't services the formerly-employed now rely upon.
Democrats exist for one reason: To create dependency upon the system; said another way, they exist to shift folks from dependency upon themselves and their efforts for survival onto Gov't systems for survival.

early half of Washington, D.C. employers said they have either laid off employees or reduced the hours of employees to adapt to the District of Columbia’s minimum wage hikes since 2014, according to a report from the Employment Policies Institute.
The minimum wage in the District of Columbia has increased from a $8.25 hourly rate in 2014 to the current rate of $11.50 per hour. Mayor Muriel Bowser advocated a $15 minimum wage in her State of the District address earlier this year.
“In recent months, the City Council in D.C. has considered enacting a number of new labor mandates, including a higher minimum wage, a bill that would fine employers for schedule changes, and a family leave policy funded by a tax on employers,” the report says.
The institute surveyed 100 employers in Washington, D.C. to understand how they would react to a further minimum wage hike.
“Employers affected by the proposed increase to a $15 minimum wage were asked if they had either reduced the number of employees on their staff, or reduced the hours of current employees, to adapt to recently enacted minimum wage increases,” the report says. “Nearly half of employers surveyed had already taken one of these steps—suggesting that 2014-16 minimum wage increases haven’t been absorbed through higher prices alone.”
According to the report, just over half of the businesses surveyed said they planned to raise prices in order to offset the cost of a minimum wage hike. Thirty-five percent said they would likely reduce staffing levels and 37 percent said they would reduce employees’ hours or reduce the number of hours they were open for business. Thirty-one percent of businesses said they were very likely to hire more skilled workers in the future to offset the higher wage.
One in five businesses said they would move out of the District of Columbia and into Arlington, Virginia where the minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. Sixteen percent of businesses surveyed said they were somewhat likely to close their business if the minimum wage hike were implemented and 6 percent of businesses said they would likely close.

I am no economist, but what on earth are these people thinking?
All of those "solutions" to raising the minimum wages that high
will have terrible effect on people with a fixed income.
Goods increase in price and services as well to support these moves?
Cutting back staff and hours?
Moving the business out? Will the same employees remain?
It does not make sense at all, except as the OP suggests:
Create a society fully dependent on Uncle Sam to care for
them from cradle to grave,

Exactly. That is the purpose as such people vote 99% dem......
Dem party using tens of billions of our tax dollars yearly to degrade and destroy our nation.
And have been doing so for over 4 decades now!
Yet they've paid no price for this socialist treason....
Instead they are lauded as the greatest and most care giving folks in this nation....
When truth is they steal billions to maintain power and have no regards for those they claim to care so much about except for how those leeches vote.. And they use our tax dollars to buy those votes from generational bred , lazy citizen/criminal elements , etc.... Fact. -Tyr

They are the party of solutions and laws that sound nice but are counterproductive. Plenty of people support those types of legislation that have no interest in creating dependence; they're just wrong.

They aren't just wrong. They're stupid. They don't bother to think about anything past a promise of free crap to any of the aforementioned consequences. Not to mention since we don't have a national cost of living, we don't need a national minimum wage. $15 an hour is good money where I'm from. It won't get you crap in NYC, DC, Miami nor any other large city. Wages are regionalized and localized and should remain that way based on the economy where you live.

I think I disagree on the premise. Folks can't support government forcing higher wages without using their sense of dependence upon the government to care for people. Maybe. See where I'm going?

There are some smart people but they are wrong.

The premise is fine. In their false thinking they believe that a higher paying job by private industry is not government dependence. You can't just blame things and automatically decide that they have nefarious intentions because you disagree; I believe I started a thread about that.

I can't allow that well-educated adults simply believe 'higher wages is always good' like they do. It's akin to believing in Santa. I think Liberals on-purpose attempt to control people or hurt people into submission to their agenda. I don't have faith-enough in mankind to think otherwise. Liberals are afraid of the truth because the truth hurts. Truth is, poverty - in the USA - is largely a choice. People decide how to spend their time - either working-as-many-jobs-as-required to lift their standard of living, or they choose to work less than what is required. Pretty simple.

Yep. Sure are. Smart doesn't equal common sense. You double the wage of a burger flippers what did you you just do to what I get paid for having actual skills? Going to double my pay as well? The effect of paying unskilled whiners twice what they deserve will be a disaster on our economy. Getting paid is not an entitlement for losers who work a grill at McDonald's. Learn a skill and EARN what you get. Whining like a bitch is NOT a skill.

Actually raising the minimum wage does tend to raise incomes of those below solid middle class. http://equitablegrowth.org/raising-minimum-wage-ripples-workforce/
Over time, there may be even more raising of incomes, but becomes harder to measure. Truth is, if the bottom workers are making over $20k for 40 hours, Their bosses will continue to make 3-5 dollars more per hour. The store manager will still make 4 to 5 times more. The owners will raise their prices so their incomes do not fall at all. Thus in the scheme of things, there is a washout effect, inflationary pricing.
Remember when a candy bar was a nickle and larger? A house 30k, not for down payment but actual cost? (me neither, but my parent's bought their home for 18k in the late 40's). They got 20X that much 50 years later, some was location, some was inflation.

Of course higher wages are good. It's the method they choose that isn't particularly helpful. But you're automatically assigning evil and control to their agenda thereby discounting anything they might add. Telling them that they're just dumb causes them to dig in their heels; no progress towards a correct solution will be made.

I'm not sure where we disagree. They may be intelligent but they choose not to see unintended consequences or they look at studies that support their POV. Everybody does it.

Big government is a constant cycle/loop of failure, dependency and lowered expectations....
spiraling into the ultimate end result....bankruptcy.
