Gawd....what a brave man!

That helical current under a lowhead dam is only to be fought with if you have the skill.
Rest In Peace, Master Sgt. You honored your own Service with your caring for others.:salute:

I don't even know what to say here. I'm still a little in shock. Which dam was he on?

Had to be at Medina Lake. Only dame of significance I know of in the area. The Frio has damns but they're spreaders and less than knee high. The big dam is at Medina and it's where the Mexicans love to go. And stupid teenagers like to do stupid shit there. I used to cliff dive as a teen there.

What a waste.

Well...not to denigrate what Master Sgt. did, I had lots of cases on the Redwood Coast where
folks got into the extreme drop-offs along shore and perished. Helical currents are not limited
to rivers. They are like a washing machine, except horizontal. Only way to beat them is swim to the side
....not into the flow

I don't have much, especially with the cut in hours, but I gave a small donation to the gofundme acct. My heart goes out to his family, he kept us safe as a country, gave his life for two kids. RIP

Ah. That's at Privilege Creek. I wasn't aware they had an actual park and dam. We'd tool down the road, park and get in the water. You know how us hillbillies are. I never actually went to a park. I did sleep all night in the rest stop drunk as a skunk once. As hard as it's been raining I wouldn't think of getting in the creek. When that suck is full and the water is running?

Leave it to some dumbass jarhead. Jesus H Christ. Ooh-f*cking-rah, MSgt. That's how you man up.

Well said...sorry you lost a brave comrade. They do not come much better than this.
Several years back a retired Gunny was escorting a youth group in Mendocino County Ca,
when 9 of them got caught in a Rip Current. He got them back to shore but died of cold
water drowning.

Cannot replace these kinds of people at all.

It just gets me this is second page news while Hitlery and O-blah-blah get the headlines. I remember this guy because bars are only so big in Bandera. It's still living in the 20s. I'd just retired and in walks this shit-talking, gung-ho jarhead. I was like this is gonna be good. I think he irritated the crap out of everyone in Arkey's that night. Then when he found out I was a retired Gunny I couldn't get rid of his ass. I basically felt like I was being interrogated. "Well, what did you do when this or that happened, Gunny?"

He's being buried at Ft Sam Houston. Oddly enough, we went to the same high school -- John Jay. Different eras though and I was only there a little while before we went to Greece. I never knew that. He was young n dumb and wanted war stories.

FYI, Bandera is 50 miles NW of San Antonio on Route 16. Sounds like he was actually from West San Antonio. That's where John Jay is.

Just weird. I thought he was a punk when I ran into him. Guess I thought wrong.

Nope. He makes me proud to claim the title "United States Marine". If I was living SA still I would crash the funeral to pay my respects.

I had to re-visit this one. All the rivers in South Central Texas are spring fed. The water IS cold. About 40-45 degrees. I remember as a kid it didn't phase me but I went there as an an adult and my nads ended up in my chest the second I jumped in. So I'm going to have to ask my mom. The only river I know of anywhere near is the Frio. The creek is usually dry unless it rains and that's not spring fed. She knows more about the official parks and crap than I do. I know where the bars all are. And the courthouse.

All the rivers along the Pacific NW are cold, especially West of the Cascades and Klamaths (Mountain Ranges). 45 degrees in the Trinity, for example,
is considered 'lower average'...good trout and salmon water though! I was on the Northwest Coast Water Safety Commission which was sorely underfunded,
but our objective was educating people about cold water hazards. We'd go to schools, Colleges, organizations, and even open forums to teach about
cold water hazards and - here's that term again - Situational Awareness! Problem was that most of the fatalities were from out-of-area visitors.

Money says these were dumbass rednecks or Mexicans from Bandera or San Antonio. We all swim in the creeks and rivers and lakes. Problem is, they're flooded right now. And this never fails. Some idiot will try and drive through a low water crossing even though you've been warned to death. Your mom van ain't making it through 4 ft of rushing water. And you damned sure can't swim in it. It's like how stupid can you be? That water has more force you're ever going to muster. You just can't fix stupid.

I think Big Sur is farthest NW I've been. The water was cold. I don't like cold. Crap, people bitch about the heat here and I'm thinking it just warmed up.
