So thinking about the zombie apocalypse and all that...

If you could drive away in one piece of Military gear - something you could operate by yourself or with one other person tops, what would it be?

Initially I think - Trident Sub. But - yeah, takes more than two folks I'd guess. Plus the specialized training.

Apache helicopter? That'd be cool - but limited on-board munitions and the whole 'have to learn to be a system-administrator to fly it' thing. Hrm. Fuel might be an issue.

I think I'd pick a Bradley M3A3. Decent armor against small arms. 300 miles per tank, takes diesel. Figure 1200 rounds of 25mm, 2200 rounds of 7.62, a few TOWs, and room-enough to sleep inside.

Concerns: It's big. It can be a PMCS nightmare. It's a 'priority target' vs something like a HMMWV. Its loud. Its heavy.

Pros: Can be hidden under basic camo nets. Lots of room. Protects against direct fire up to probably .50 cal and all sorts of indirect fire. Intimidation factor.

You'd need some garage!

I'd have to extend the poles and move my tent, but I think I can find a garage.

(literally my net, my tent, taken in the back yard of the house I just sold) :)

...i've been awake for 7hrs (woke up early, at 4 instead of my typical 0615). I make people laugh because I'm pretty witty. A good marine would be ready for it.

And.

It's about bedtime for me, actually. Crap. I DID quote myself. Sure I'll be hearing the end of this.

What happens when you run out of ammo and/or fuel, and have to land. And take-off. And pilot that bitch? :)

How, exactly, does one "bug out" in a tank? The whole concept is ludicrous, since bugging out means 'on foot'. At least, that's what I thought. Along those lines, I would take a fully-loaded bug-out bag, complete with weapons, ammo, first-aid, food, and other survival gear.

You use your enemy's last ammo to get rid of them FIRST. As for Bugging Out. Ain't gonna happen. No way would I give up OUR NATION, FREEDOM, LIBERTY, and RIGHTS by RUNNING AWAY, or CUTTING, AND RUNNING.

I WOULD DEFEND WHAT IS OURS UNTIL I DIE!

I agree. At the same time, I'm taking to the hills. I'll fight on my terms, not theirs. I took bugging out as meaning heading for the hills, not leave the country. THAT will be the day. I ain't Syrian. I'm opening up a can o whoop-ass. I'm like most vets and rednecks. You give me no choice? I got no choice.

As far the weapons go, I consider that a strange question. I'm humping as many as I can. And I'm finding me a horse. Trucks need gas. Horses eat grass.

First off, that isn't a tank.

Bugging out does not mean 'on-foot'. I means hastily abandoning one's, say, homestead.

How far would you carry that 1200lbs bag? (shrug)

I'd live. My family would live. And in my bradley, I'd fuck-up some shit. :) Until I ran out of gas I guess.

Sure, it's nice. However, if invaded you take the enemy's weapons and use them against them. You can't run down to the gun shop and buy .3030's if you're invaded and living in the hills. But you can kill one of the SOBs and rob HIS ammo pouches. I'm taking the bayonet too. I'm also taking a crossbow and all my knives. In survival mode you have to able to support your own weapons.

What's nice? Having a Bradley? It'd be cool.

But taking the enemy's weapons and all that? In a SHTF situation there is not enemy to pilfer. We're talking bands of roving assholes trying to take your stuff.

Now, one factor - lazy folk won't walk out into the country to get stuff. At least initially. So getting the hell out of the way would be a great thing - something a tracked vehicle could facilitate.

The sheeple can stay home all they want. More for me. My biggest problem would be finding an unpolluted water source. Me n the hoss need water. That hasn't had a damned chemical spill in it. Fortunately, I can get to the Rockies in a couple of days on a horse from where I am.
