Without going back to the sites, I recall the Indy was under Top Secret comms while transporting the
atomic bombs.

After that mission, someone somehow did not lift that comms plan and left her pretty much stranded.

back in those days the Navy did not report the movements of warships. known as a moverep. in this case the Indy was changing commands and and was not reported over due. nobody had the first damned clue where she was. those guys floated out for 6 days till some officer noticed she was way over due. a search and rescue was ordered. by this time the 800 survivors was dwindled down to 300. there's the cluster fuck

during the sinking Radio did get off an SOS but before the ID codes were sent power off lights out. the distress was picked up ashore. but no codes no rescue. Jap subs sent fake SOS calls to draw out rescue ships for targets.

after this the rules of course changed. all ships regardless of type was required to send a moverep. reporting its departure time course speed and ETA. to the command it was leaving and CC to the new command. I sent a shitload of these reports during Nam. as did everyone

I remember how lousy comm used to be. And I'm NOT aiming that at the people. The comm itself. I'm a grunt. DOn't know much about it except you need 10 batteries for a Prick 77 and 2 might work and you don't want to be the guy humping the radio. That antenna makes you Target Numero Uno.

I was just being sarcastic. The whole event was a tragedy. Make through all this sh*t only to be eaten by a shark. That's FUBAR.

I learned about the Indy watching the history channel. You know, back when they showed history. :rolleyes: Those squids have my utmost respect. Hardcore. Could you imagine some of these wimpydoodles we have now going through that?

there were a lot of Marines that died in this disaster. it was crewed by 1,196 men. seems large even for a heavy cruiser. the reaction to the movie took me by surprise. fear and revenge. people were afraid to get in the bathtub. my god there might be a 2 ton 25 ft great white in there :laugh::laugh: and the real sharks were hunted down and killed by the thousands because of a mechanical shark.

Richard Dreyfuss, who played Cooper narrated a 2007 movie called Ocean of fear. it straighten out a lot of myth's about sharks

I was working as a lifeguard near Avalon NJ when the movie had come out.

Every time people saw a fin in the water, many would be screaming SHARK! Ummm..
