Introduced in 1972, it passed the House 354-24 and the Senate 84-8. Within five years it received 35 of the 38 states needed for ratification. Even though a joint resolution of Congress extended the deadline of seven years to ten years, no other state voted to ratify the amendment.

Leading the charge against the amendment was Phyllis Schlafly.

She died today at 92. May her blessed soul rest in peace.
