The Navy deep-sixed all of its 91 enlisted ratings titles Thursday, marking the beginning of an overhaul of the rigid career structure that has existed since the Continental Navy in a radical shift sure to reverberate through the fleet and the veterans community beyond.

Sailors will no longer be identified by their job title, say, Fire Controlman 1st Class Joe Sailor, effective immediately. Instead, that would be Petty Officer 1st Class Joe Sailor.

Officials say the controversial move will improve sailors' lives and ease their transition into the civilian workforce by broadening their skills in this tectonic shift in Navy’s personnel system to redraw the traditional lines between enlisted job specialties — a massive shake-up that is only beginning. Within the next three to four years, earlier if possible, the service plans to allow sailors to retrain in related skills, expanding their worth to the Navy while reaping broader assignment opportunities as well as increased advancement changes and greater access to special pays and bonuses that come with the most critical skills.

I don't know about this move. There is a lot of pride in identifying with a certain rating.
And as specialized as the Navy is, they might just see a decrease in professionalism and
subject matter knowledge.

Our subject matter specialist knowledge fell off greatly when QM and RD were eliminated.
That JRR we had took Boatswain's Mates out of Command Centers, folks who were boat
coxswains and patrol boat XPO's. That is the boiler plate level of Surface SAR with SAR
Stations and patrol boats. They were replaced with OS's (Operations Specialists), many
of whom had never actually performed the duties of a boat or PB crew.

SAD, SAD, SAD. Finally. The Navy has become nothing more than a politically correct wing of the ANTI-EVERYTHING American Traditions that made this nation come this far.

They did this kind of thing in the 1970's, under Zumwalt, and it failed miserably then as well.

This is all part of the plan to tear down America.

Not my idea, or opinion. Read the link for yourself: http://www.nowtheendbegins.com/barack-obama-plans-destroy-united-states-america/

First Obama swore to change and Control HEALTHCARE....."OBAMACARE".
Then he swore to change our Energy policys....CLOSING MINES, PUNISHING POWER STATIONS, LAYING OFF MINERS.
Next...he began tearing down the MILITARY, by firing more than 500 EXPERIENCED FLAG OFFICERS in the Pentagon.
And he IGNORES our laws, our constitution, and hires people just like him to DESTROY the rest of America.
Hillary has promised to follow Obama's lead. What else do we need to know?

Some of the rate merges made sense. I was striking BT when I was sent to MK school. I made BT3, then MK3 upon graduation. Since we had just about discarded all the old steam vessels I saw the writing on the wall.

Then they started on the medical rates and you deckies got whacked.

But to take away your "specialty", that just cuts your pride :lame2:

Bilgerat. This all sounds like, and reminds me of the many schools, where teachers, and principals decided that members of Sports teams would all be awarded TROPHY'S, whether they win, or lose. And also NOT KEEPING SCORE....to avoid Hurting the Little Rug Rat feelings if they didn't remain politically correct to APPEASE their parents, or the teachers.
The destruction of our military should be easy for Obama, and friends. They have lowered the eligibility requirements from WEIGHT, to DRUG USAGE, to Felony charges that need to be OVERLOOKED to remain FAIR to the lawbreakers who never intend to obey that crummy OATH, to protect, and defend the Constitution....THEY DON'T RESPECT, or BELIEVE IN.
